Practice - Leogang DH World Cup 4

BICYCLES AND DIRT

Alright, alright, apparently that title's taken, but it's the perfect summary of a World Cup practice day; it's the pure and simplest day of action we get. Highlights include the inaugural course cruise, the first on-bike chats in the woods and all the baptismal crashes in the tricky spots. Fridays are about finding your riding feet, fettling the machinery in the pits and riding off the clock... until the fairly relaxed timed training session before home time.

In the calm after the literal storm this afternoon, it was Gee Atherton who pushed hardest to stoke the racing furnace at a 3:31.5 and with Manon Carpenter less than 30 seconds behind. Quite a terrifying revelation for anyone at home who still thinks top-flight ladies are slower than them. Anyway no need to get all anxious about your crippled masculinity now, there's not much we can do to restore it today. Let's just enjoy the bicycles and the dirt and the interaction of those excellent things. Mountain biking... Yehoo.

If there was ever any indication as to what the night would bring this was it. With full moon on fire behind storm clouds it was only a matter of time before a storm of biblical proportions brough heavy rain and wind to Leogang.
The full moon on fire behind storm clouds... Friday the 13th was on it's way.

The more things change the more they stay the same. The jagged mountians of Austria couldn t be more different than Fort WIlliam unlike the spastic weather that both seem to have in common.

ET phone home. If I could only combine this shot with the same appearance of the moon from yesterday night.

John Hall Aaron Gwin s mechanic putting a possessive hand on the number one plate. Interestingly enough Troy Brosnan has the number two plate behind Gwin a mere 88 points currently separate the two. Anyone care to place their bets on who will be on top after this weekend s re-shuffle Keep in mind Gee Atherton is only 127 points adrift from Gwin and 39 behind Brosnan.

bigquotesI've been asked a little bit who's the top dog on the team. Well we don't have a pecking order or a totem pole, all three of the riders get equal support with mechanics, product, kit... all the things they need are available to each of them. Do I think the relationship with Aaron and Troy is pushing them along? Yeah I do, I think internally those guys each want to be the best on the team, I know I did when I raced man. It's pushing them, but it's healthy. I know at Fort William the guys were sharing all their GoPro footage and working together as really solid teammates and they both benefited from it. So whether that continues to happen as we get closer to the end of the season if they're 1 and 2 in points, man I don't know! We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.  I'm a little confused about why some of the top riders didn't know about the back protection until now and are having to fashion pretend braces out of marsh guards etc.? Isn't it the same every year? Surely their team managers should know this before the races at least and make sure their riders have some form of protection on hand?
  • 11 4
So why exactly is Austria so strict on their protection rules?
  • 33 3
I was thinking the same thing.

Then looked harder at all the pictures and 99% of these guys dont even wear a neck brace. The back protection rule is a joke it seems if cardboard passes.
  • 13 5
I wouldn't consider letting the riders make home-brew back protectors, day of, strict.
  • 58 1
Yeah they measure the brake lever distance to the millimetre and have computer telemetry but they don't know that they need back protectors? WTF?
  • 25 3
I was thinking the same thing. All the trouble they go through to rig up these make shift back plates, wouldn't it just be easier to just get an actual back plate?
  • 24 3
Minnaar will probably get disqualified for forgetting to wear cardboard on his back
  • 9 12
Maybe the crews didn't know until it was too late, but maybe they did and just stuck with cardboard as a way to get past the check without wearing a big heavy protector.... just like everyone does at races with compulsory arm protection. In my opinion neckbraces should be mandatory, because IN MY OPINION they are more effective than back plates due to protecting from higher verterbrae injuries and they can't be faked with cardboard...

I think the makeshift back protectors are a deliberate protest, mocking the rules to make a point about what the riders think of them...

I'd go with protest, back protectors are annoying to wear no matter which brand.
  • 6 1
they all know, that they need protection ... they just go the lightest and least hindering way.
  • 6 2
maybe that helps - the austrian cycling association is setting the rules for every race held in Austria. they altered the uci rules and make every rider wear rigid back protection in dh races plus gloves -> Blanki must wear them this Weekend ;-)

in my opinion it is a joke and in Austria every rider must wear a fullface, gloves and knee protection for enduro races. in italy it is even worse - every rider must wear what is needed in Austria plus a backprotector - if not you get disqualified at the Enduro races
  • 4 3
the suspension guy handcuffs his laptop to him at all times and Gee Atherton wears cardboard as a spine protector.....logic is a beautiful thing right???
  • 1 0
 Why not?
  • 21 5
I think it's really stupid what these guys are doing, making "protectors" out of cardboard. All of them have some kind of clothing/safety gear sponsor, but they'ld rather wear cardboard then their sponsors gear?
If I was Fox/Oneal/TLD/etc. I'ld forbid it. There is really good protection out there, which is a million times more comfortable than cardboard, but the riders make their sponsors look like total idiots!
I'm not wearing full protection on a casual ride, too, but if I'm at a race or ride a lift accessed trail, I'm always wearing back and chest protection.
  • 7 6
I don't understand why they don't have one in the first place... I mean, Personnally I just lost mine, but tracks are pretty flat here and I'm planning on buying a new one...
But theses guys are riding the roughest tracks and they don't even bother to wear a back protector? Well, when one of them will be in a wheelchair I won't say "oh shit no! why? that's horrible" but "That's what happens Smile "

That's not even a game I mean... Choosing between a wheelchair and walking??

 @ bikounet

Back protectors won't do shit to stop you from breaking bones, it just stops superficial damage like cuts gouges etc.

If you actually read the labels on those 661 pressure suit things it quite states "This will not protect you from breaking your bones and will only stop superficial damage such as cuts gouges from happening"

If this rule is in place to protect their bones from breaks, honestly, their better off wearing a neck brace. If you're going to break your lower/mid back bones, wearing a back protector won't stop it as there's still going to be kinetic energy at play.
  • 6 0
Well I'd guess they write it there for legal reasons - so it wouldn't really mean the protectors don't do anything else.

Just like the MIPS - everyone knows it's meant to help against concussions, but they can't market it like that 'coz it's almost impossible to prove. So they simply say it "reduces rotational forces" or whatever... And voila! Noone can sue them.

Ask Barrel about those back protector...
  • 8 0
I don't really have him around at this moment... Sorry.

Could you elaborate it a little?
  • 3 6
downhiller88 is right, at 60kmh coming into woods or a rocky section a bit of plastic/kevlar etc etc is only going to stop superficial stuff.

combined with a neck brace they can avoid some neck trauma but a simple back protector stops scuffs and not much else.

hit me with the stories of your back protector saving your life on the local the local trails!!

Dont forget your superdooper megabionic gloves that stop the bones in your hands getting broken too Wink
  • 1 0
I think they all knew the rules, it's just that there Pro's and they don't want to wear it so they're basically giving two fingers up to the UCI and Austrian cycling committee. I think most countries in continental Europe you have to wear back plates when racing (someone correct me)
  • 1 2
I know the regionals here in France demand gloves and back protection I dont think the WC riders have to adhere to the same stipulations in the WC races
  • 3 0
And why do they have spare marsh guards but not any back protection?
  • 2 0
Why not being strict on protection? It's the same rule for every racer so nobody really has a disadvantage.
  • 4 1
The whole point of the mud guards and cardboard is to intentionally mock the unusual rules. They are grown lads and can make their own mind up what protection is required I'd say. More protection equals more distractions and focus loss for some people - and so more crashes. As for mandatory neck guards, for that to happen there would need to be a peer reviewed study published on their effectiveness and safety.
  • 2 1
Whats it saying about their sponsors protection if no one is willing to wear them ? Uncomfortable , sweaty , restrictive , and in the case of arm pad often cause early arm pump.

Sort it out and make some comfy shit !
  • 40 1
You seriously need to go through that much trouble NOT to wear one of the 25 brands of spine protection?
  • 14 0
I'm wondering why the protection companies that sponsor them haven't come up with a superlight spine protector that the pros wouldn't mind wearing.
  • 1 0
Because there is no point unless the pros and the public are wanting one. While ever they are happy to blatantly flaunt the rules no one will bother to develop one. If riders were wearing currently available protectors and then asked their sponsors for something better and lighter and less restrictive i think it would then get developed.
  • 6 0
PLC: Because it's just not possible to make it superlight and comfortable while having a serious safety advantage.
You just can't have both. The companies would make fools of themselves marketing something as protection, that does not protect.

The argument I get to hear most of the time is, that riders feel sharper or more concentrated and less restricted without the protector. Well, they are old enough to decide for them selves.
They want cardboard, they get cardboard.
  • 1 0
I have a really hard time with the comfort/restriction argument as I've always worn back protection and never had heat/comfort/restriction problems. To each his own I guess but my point was that if your protection is not deemed comfortable or unrestrictive by your proriders, maybe it's time to go back to the drawing board?
  • 2 0
PLC07- these racers are chasing fractions of a second. If they think they will be slower or risk going slower then it's simply not worth it to them. Pretty much all racers in all disciplines think this way.
  • 24 0
this is definitely gnarly !! Blenki is wearing gloves !
  • 12 3
Or they just have stupid rules like the back protection one, and forced riders to use gloves as well.
  • 8 0
the Austrian rules are the reason for the gloves
  • 2 0
That's too bad, gloves are a highly personal thing.
  • 3 4
I think if it's raining you would need to wear gloves, too slippery otherwise.
  • 3 3
whats stupid about mandatory armour? I mean, helmets, gloves and a spine protector are pretty basic. I personally think helmet, neck, spine and knees should be mandatory, then people don't have to risk their safety in easily avoidable ways, just to keep up with some idiot who is happy to ride down basically naked.
  • 4 1
Many riders hate wearing that shit. It should not be mandatory. Especially not gloves. And no not every rider needs to wear gloves to keep grip in the rain. I you really think that you should probably work on your hand strength lol
  • 1 0
that's the rules and they are the same for everyone... I am sure as most of you know UCI demands riders to wear baggy cloth and moto style helmets with visors for downhill races even though lycras an roadie helmets like in the 90ies would be clearly faster. rules for looks stupid... Rules for safety not so much. But Allright, We should go back to lycras! give riders freedoom! That would also solve the question which rider has the biggest balls once and for all!
  • 1 0
Great idea... Whilst I watch the race, you can check out their ball size and report back Wink
  • 1 0
MX gear surely gives better protection when ragdolling through a rock garden? Wear whatever you want when riding for fun sure. I rode DH yesterday in just a helmet and kneepads. (obviously fully dressed). But when racing I reckon protective gear should be standardized. Everyone wearing the same thing, everyone gets the same disadvantage and no-one has to risk their neck any more than they already are just by throwing themselves down a (hopefully) gnarly DH track.
  • 1 0
But the riders who dont normally wear certain protection would be at a disadvantage com0ared to the riders who normally do and know what they like and are used to having it on thier body. I dont wear elbow pads I never will wear elbow pads. They annoy me when I ride. Focus breaker?

couldn't find those springs on the stendec site. only steel and ti. must be some serious stealth mode stuff
  • 2 0
Ditto malathion........I think PB is taking the piss.......lighter than Ti and £30 cheaper (www.ti-springs.com/Buy_Now_Ti_Spring/p1892585_8927016.aspx)!WTF.If they're not taking the piss I'll have 3 thanks......
  • 1 0
those ti springs are cheap & nasty shit tho !!
  • 1 0
They'll be in stock in 4 week. Spoke to dave garland today. They make them lighter buy reducing the amount of coils and wind the spring with wider gaps. Simple really, surprised it's not been done before with steel coils. Ti springs.com make the worst coils I've ever used. Weighed about 50g less than steel. Again comes down to how they're wound, ti ain't that much lighter than steel but wound with bigger spacings you can reduce the material used hence making bigger savings. Ti springs.com don't do this hence really heavy and cheap price

Did u drop them an email or call them? There website didnt help much...

Interesting about shimano's head cam sending out data via wifi!

Does this mean that we may with the help of various wifi spots on the mountain one day be able to watch a race run live via a head cam as its actually happening??

That would be cool!
  • 8 0
It definitely means that, the UCI is looking at allowing them in road so we can watch the sprints live from inside the bunch. They did a test and it looks pretty cool: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeCRnFq_9Lo

Wifi on a helmet camera isnt new- gopro have had WiFi on theirs for quite a while now...
  • 3 2
Except if you leave wifi turned on, on your go pro the battery lasts for all of about 3 minutes.

I'm going to start scratching my nose with my left hand cause that's how the pros do it. great pictures and captions.
  • 9 2
Troy Brosnan has the right idea, just throw on a moto chest protector and call it done.
  • 13 0
Haha that was Mitch! Definitely a smarter move than making your own
  • 6 1
Regarding Rachel and Clay's complaints about tracks like these. There's a simple remedy: if Sam Hill approves of it then its a World Cup worthy track.
  • 5 0
Sure Leogang might be "world cup worthy" but it is still 100% sub-par when compared to one of Sam's all-time favorite tracks less than 1.5 hours away- Schaldming. This is why everyone is complaining. Yes, Leogang is a step in the right direction (especially when compared to Pietermaritzburg and Cairns) but not when around the corner is one of the best tracks in all of racing.
  • 3 0
I know, that's why I wrote that bit about requiring Sam's stamp of approval because he dislikes tracks like these.
  • 2 1
And I think everyone should stop bitching.
1) Schlammig did not want the dh worldcup anymore because it was in their way preparing for the ski world championships.
2) Leogang stepped in and ever since presented existing races to watch.
3) Schladming too is a bikepark.
4) From years of first hand riding experience in both bikeparks I wouldn't know about any section in schladming significantly gnarlier than any section in Leogangs woods. At the current state I would think it's the other way round.
5) the flat or pedal section is not really flat nor does it require pedaling but if one wants to be fast a few strokes might help and if one can't deal with the fact that pedaling makes faster he or she should probably not be racing bicycles.
  • 3 0
 Shladming>Leogang. That is all
  • 1 0
@michibretz, yes Schladming is a bike park, but it is not built in such a man-made and phony manner as Leogang is. Comparing both race tracks against one another, Schladming has better wooded sections (natural gnar that is magically somehow still super flowy at top speed), better pitch, better corners, better dirt... this list goes on. Sure there are some improvements to Leogang's race track but it's simply not at the same caliber of Schladming. I mean shit, half the time you feel like you are riding on loose marbles. But you're right, Schladming bowed out because of ski world champs, but hopefully they will again start biding on UCI races. It's just frustrating to the vast majority of the racers. Look at how close the times are- there's simply no line choices at Leogang. There is far less creativity at Leogang and the qualification times today prove that.
  • 1 0
Which natural wood section do you mean? The three turns about 3/4 down the track that are together about 150 meters? Yes those are fun on the "enduro"

Just think it's funny how some average Joe's from the states and Kanada rave about Leogang being simple never even been at any of those tracks.

4 years ago I moved from my place 20 minutes from schladming to the states. Since then I am traveling all over the states and Canada with my bike, rode al those great trails and tracks and have not yet found anything half as gnarly as Leo...

Anyway I guess we will see how much better it is next week when the ixs cup is in schladming...
  • 1 0
Ha, it sounds like we switched locations Wink I was living in Norther Vermont and riding there and at Bromont in Quebec. Those trails there are far more technical than Leogang, but for sure less steep. Austria definitely wins the steepness debate vs North America.

Matthew Delorme absolutely killed it with his shots man, so sick.
  • 2 1
Riiiiiiight? He always does though. Amazing.
  • 2 0
Oh my Christ, I love the shot of Delorme an the porta-johns... I mean, duh on the bike/shredding photos, but the five dudes in a potty just sums up the hilarity of finding dry coverage at races.

Excellent work, PB. This made me want to sell off my non-necessary organs and move to AUT. It's also giving me some serious anticipation and bone-deep happiness for the upcoming US races. Muchas gracias, hombres. Wink
  • 3 1
There is no CE standard for back plates. The Austrian rules only state rigid back protection. Hence cardboard etc.. can be used and the UCI Comms can't stop them as the rides are riding within the rules.
  • 2 0
Si, surely someone is making just a back plate on a light vest or something similar these days?
  • 4 0
Is cardboard classed as rigid though? If it rains it'll be like having mushy peas on your back,
  • 2 0
If d3o counts as rigid it is about as effective as mushy peas in my experience.
  • 7 3
Thanks pinkbike. Great report. Funny too! Ratboy... a haircut please. You ain't Axl Rose!

WC DH Riders are true Sports people...... Last years number 1 fitting tear offs onto his own goggles.... You would never see this in motorsports.... These guys are the best of the best and yet they still are humble enough to fit tear-offs etc

Those new springs look very interesting - was recently contemplating a ti upgrade but these are lighter and cheaper. I wonder what the longevity is like. Thanks for the fantastic photos Pinkbike.

Happy B'day Trace rip it up! Heal up quick Mik! Going to be a great race
  • 1 0
Curious to find out why Sik Mik choose that particular type of repair vs some of the newer and much less invasive procedures there are out there, like the one JC got.
  • 2 0
Could be because it guarantees his shoulder should be as strong as before, and back in the correct place. I suffered the exact same injury, but have had no surgery and my shoulder is now weaker under force because of it and sits half an inch lower.
  • 1 0
Hello Jawa, how long ago was your injury. I also have the exact same injury have seen 3 orthopedic surgeons and they all have different opinions on treatment.
  • 2 0
I suffered a grade 3 last fall, and i am also a competititve powerlifter. My strength is back and mobility is fine. Train with weights, properly, and you will get the stability and strength you need. Surgery is certainly an option, but I am back to my previous self... Just a lot of hard work.
  • 1 0
GeeBus, thanks for the reply. It seems like a very common injury with no preferred treatment.
  • 1 0
Thats true. My surgeon suggested i leave it, as i had muscle mass to support the injury, unless i develop chronic pain. So far so good.
