Process: How Chromag Makes a Bike - Video

Feb 21, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

This is the first episode in our new 'Process' series where we focus on how a bike company actually produces, engineers and tests their bikes. We stopped by Chromag to see how they go from an initial concept to a bike that is ready for sale.

First ibis and now chromag??? Pinkbikes on a roll today!
  • + 30
Let's call it 'Good Content Wednesday'. No stupidly priced eBikes here today. Not today.
  • + 16
@Scottybike36: They'll make up for it by dropping a new standard by the end of the day.
  • + 66
@yeti951SD: You do realize that we don't actually make new standards at PB, right?
  • + 76
@vernonfelton: oh, that's not what we do? Crap. Better put down this tapered 1' 1/9th" headtube I've been whittling...
  • + 18
@vernonfelton: But if you didn't talk about them, I wouldn't know about them, and I wouldn't know to be mad. Something about a tree falling in the woods...
  • + 12
 @paulhaysom:

Wait is it stiffer? I'm feeling about 3% of flex in my steerer tube specifically that sounds like just the solution i've been waiting for...
  • - 3
@yeti951SD: At the end of the day you decide man. No one is forcing you to buy sh*t except yourself. Don't blame Pinkbike for doing their job.
  • + 1
Yo @vernonfelton: unrelated question here but do you have any word on a Orbea Rallon review from pink bike? Interested to hear your guys take on it????
  • + 1
@Scottybike36: no eBikes! But I hear Joe P has one for sale! Hahahahaha.
  • + 1
@paulhaysom: since its smaller than 1' 1/8", it'll probably feel like a wet noodle, but the .0679 gram weight savings are worth it at any price!!!! TAKE MY MONEY!!!!
  • + 1
@paulhaysom: I think we should really go for a new grip diameter, that would force a new bar and stem standard which could match your new HT.
  • + 1
@vernonfelton: Yes. I do realize that, what my comment meant was you guys would reveal a new standard from a company that supports/sponsors Pinkbike. It would just be nice to see more unbiased reviews. I get it you guys gotta get paid, but a little more constructive criticism would make readers feel like you're on their side (the consumer) and not in the pockets of bike component companies.
  • + 1
1’ 1/9th” 1 foot and 1/9th of an inch head tube. Holy smokes!!! That going to be like 5000% stiffer. @paulhaysom:
  • + 3
@yeti951SD: Sounds like you have a great idea for a new mtb website. Go forth and prosper.
  • + 48
Ill admit, I buy pretty much anything that has bears on it... Chromag you are top notch, keep up making rad products!!

 Excellent customer service as well.
  • + 37
#1 take away for me(compared to previous random company videos)....NO WHINING about how hard the struggle is and crying about how high prices are necessary in order to have success in life...as other companies do, all the while wearing $500+ worth of clothes, brand new trucks everywhere, brand new homes, choosing to live and work in ritzy places...eff those other guys ........No hint of that here, bravo Cromag, bravo Smile

Proud owner of a Rootdown, wanted a primer, but decided to save a buck so I could #putaribbononit. Love that thing best decision I ever made bicycle wise. Guys at Chromag were super responsive. Since my Rootdown only had one set of water bottle bosses, I asked if it would void the warranty to add another set, Ian picked up the phone and we discussed my plan. Not to often you get the owner to give you the go ahead to add holes to the frame.

Great bike, great company, great people. I'll buy another.
  • + 3
That's a great story! I can't imagine any other company would even have the conversation
  • + 9
This is looking to be a great series!! Will definitely follow. Don't forget to interview Chinese companies! It would be eye-opening to hear whether Chinese import/export companies can effectively explain their R&D process, introduce their engineers, talk about their layup procedures, safety testing, QC, SOPs, customer service, and explain their universal sub-1K pricing on everything.
  • + 11
We'll give it a go if we get out there. But remember our Taiwan video? That was a pretty tricky one to film, if you haven't watched that video I'd recommend giving it a look.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfgTXFx4Ins
  • + 2
@paulhaysom: Your Taiwan video was outstanding! It was a whole new world for a lot of folks. There are import & export companies that a lot of people (on mtbr, for instance) buy frames from. i.e. ICAN, Pro-Mance, Carbon Speed, Hongfu, Dengfu, BXT, Tideace, etc. They do almost zero marketing/communications (they are bad at it), so it takes outreach and it's tricky, I know, but this open mold stuff is a growing sector of the carbon bike industry nevertheless. The content would be compelling I am sure.
  • + 1
"explain their R&D process" you mean, how they choose which design to copy? How they get their worn out molds? Or do you mean, how they sleep at night when they use expired materials?
  • + 10
Thats so awesome !! Proud to own a Chromag

Now I know what True Love looks like!
  • + 5
I just LOVE my Stylus 26". Yeah...26 is dead...so what? Still my shreddy hardtail for riding trails. Soo much fun. Remember talking to them on the phone all those years ago and telling me the Stylus would be the ideal "retired DH rider do-it-all hardtail" So true. So rad.
  • + 2
 No 26'' aren't dead !!!!
  • + 4
 @Mic173

10,000% correct. I rode my 26" Stylus today in fact , and it is still a veritable dirt missile. Best handling bike I've ever owned. That bike will be in my quiver permanently.
  • + 2
Yes, as another 26" Stylus owner I can agree that 26 will never actually be dead. Most fun bike I could even imagine riding.
  • + 3
@lukedaq: 26" Gypsy here - still love it as well!

@hankthespacecowboy: i miss my stylus all of a sudden

What does "YYZ" sound like played through all of those speakers at once?

Love theese guys. Such s great company. I needed a replacement axe for my 1st gen scarabs (I stripped it) and they don't make them any more :0. So they sold me a new set for the same price as the axel. THAT is what will keep me comming back for the rest of my life
  • + 6
plus tire came along and we're like "What is this?" LMAO I think I say that every other week with the bike industry
  • + 5
I want the guys job so is just standing there, looking straight forward, pretending to work while they break down how they Build a frame
  • + 2
I'm glad they explained who "BEN" was and what he was doing. I was laughing wondering what the guy in the beanie was doing? He looked like he was trying so hard not to look at the camera LOL!!!!
  • + 4
Damn it, I had 3 things to do today, drop off a fork to vorsprung, get beers at Coast brewery and get a new handlebar. Drinking a beer and no fork in my bike and I forgot something!
  • + 6
who's the stereo nerd at Chromag? I see a lot of cool gear, I hope you guys have good tunes bumpin' all day!
  • + 6
All of them. You should see what it sounds like at their annual Show n Shine party.

@Chromagbikes Nicely done! Love the products, love the brand. More bike industry companies should emulate how Ian has grown this company. - Brad Waldron, Kali Mad Scientist.
  • + 3
Just picked up my new samurai frame last week and finished building yesterday, 160 fox 36, transfer dropper and xt 1x10. My second Chromag, definitely the best ridiing hardtails around IMO
  • + 1
Such a rad company! Been there last summer during a holiday in Whistler, The staff is so friendly and kind. They immediately invited us for their shop crew trail ride later that day! Awesome to see such a small boutique company running a beautiful business doing what they love.
  • + 4
Great video. Watching this puts Chromag on my list of possible bikes in the future.
  • + 5
Isn't that guy "Ben" in the back ground YT's race mechanic??
  • + 6
Yes. Everyone here at Chromag has extensive background in the sport. Legit yo.
  • + 1
I love this company! Bikes and customer service is spot on! Always puts a smile on my face to drop in at the shop and talk to Ian and the team. And huge grin when I swing a leg over my Primer! Fuk Yeah!! #inchromagwetrust

My Chromag Stylus 26" is the sickest bike ever owned. Ive Been through a lot of bikes but the Chromag Stylus is the warhorse in the stable, always ready for annihilation.
  • + 4
I have been a proud owner of both a Chromag Stylus and Sakura, both of which we're the best hard tails iv'e ever owned.
  • + 1
Just head to BTR, in your own UK backyard! Smaller than Chromag, but a very similar personal, honest approach, with high precision, FEA and 3DCAD, in the design and build.
The owners (Burf and Tam) are happy to take a ride alongside you on your new BTR, or spend a day helping you to build it up in their own shop.

I write from personal experience and constant riding of my BTR Pinner, which is a full susser, but the hardtails are still the base of their business.

  • + 2
When I bought a Surface last summer, Seb at Cromag was excellent to work with, even as US customs rejected the bike at the border. It found its way to Maine eventually!
  • + 2
