Qualification Photo Epic: Fire in the Hole - Lenzerheide DH World Champs 2018

Sep 7, 2018
by Nathan Hughes

Fog, fans, and FAF racing... today was an atmospheric one out on the mountain, headlined by a 'return of the Mac' and with a real nail-biter queued up for the women's race. From the early morning, thick fog clung to the course, keeping the rocks and roots slick all the way until the beeps of Qualifying drowned out the cowbells. The classic 'North Shore' conditions brought a vibe we've never encountered in this part of the World. Lenzerheide has hosted three World Cups with near immaculate summer weather each time. The clouds should now be on their way out, with sun being swapped in for the last practice day and nothing but rainbows on the forecast for the big show itself.

The nature of World Champs is a YOLO affair and there's no better thrill than a wide-open race with no clear favourite like we have on hands here. In the men's, a top five of MacDonald, Vergier, Fearon, Maes, and Gwin separated by just two seconds leaves a lot to the imagination, particularly with enduro wizard, Maes, having lost a chain long before sight of the finish area. Rainbow club members Hart and Bruni were also inside the top ten, while Pierron crashed and Minnaar is possibly not yet fully recovered. Of course, we have to consider that, for the protected riders, this afternoon's shenanigans are of little consequence; not even having much effect on Sunday's start order.

A plot twist could be on the way for the women's race as well, as Tahnee Seagrave had the advantage by some 4 seconds by the second split today, only to come off the bike and cross the line less than a second back on the four-time champ, Atherton. Vali Holl looks set to predictably steal the show on a bike that seems to have already won the World Champs (at least for most popular paint), having overtaken four competitors on her way to victory, while Kade Edwards put a huge score on the board and went fastest in the Junior Men's, although there were notable crashes.

All eyes on Sunday.

We're pretty spoiled on pinkbike. Shit's free, photos are on point, and they have the most content. AND they put up with our whining? If I was in charge, after so many water bottle complaints I would f*cking fold!!!!

Thank you Pinkbike,

Stoked for this race! I wonder if some riders kept their cards closer to their chest in this quali since there were no points on the line? For the men, so many potential winners. For the ladies, one more head to head for bragging rights. Hoping for consistent weather and clean runs for everybody. I’ll be rooting for Seagrave and Gwin to earn some stripes.
  • + 10

Atherton/seagrave part of me thinks Pom Pom could spring a surprise. Give Vali the stripes now. Love kade to win but think it. Will be French Commencal rider. Hate to say it but think it’s GWins time but will be cheering for Laurie and the French boys

This qualies are just bs. All the best risers cruised down basically, knowing you got people with cameras scoping for lines why giving them away (gwin). Bruni crashes and ends up 7 proves that.
I'd be happy if bulldog wins, or better sick mick in conjunction with his sister. That would be awesome. Anyway my money are on gwin, atherton, holl, thibaut

The whole photo team is killing it! @natedh9 that overhead shutter drag twist photo is lovely, as is the mid-air crash in the woods.

Photogs are soooo sick!!!! Pinkbike deserves some awards outside of the mtb industry, for both images and site design.

Congratulations to Nathan Hughes for that shot with circular motion blur "Like a record, baby."
Absolutely superb. I can't even begin to think how you conceived of it.
I wonder how many you tried Smile

Come to think of it, maybe the time starts when the transponder crosses, not when the little bar gets pushed out of the way? Anyone know?
  • + 5
The time is determined by a laser at the start and finish lines, the transponder is just to tell the computer which number rider just passed through each laser.

@GrandMasterOrge: It's a backup timing system too no?
  • + 3
Sponsoring dogs. What will they think of next.
  • + 1
It looks like Moir's transponder is on the side of his fork. No idea how it translates into time, but I imagine it's slower than on the front of it like everyone else.
  • + 5
It shouldn’t matter. The tip of the tire isn’t racing, the transponder is.

What happens if someone like Cecile, who wasn't in all the races, wins world champs? Would she still get the rainbow jersey?
  • + 1
Yes and she would have to wear it at all uci events
  • + 1
its a one off race........she would get the rainbow. just like martin maes if he can duplicate last race.....and there is a chance he could take it.

@stacykohut: Oh man... could you imagine a Maes/Ravanel sweep!? DH would have to take a long look at training this winter.

Epic photos for sure. You have a talented staff. Race coverage, with an eye on the artful.

Such close timing, I'm watching live at 3:45 am. It's going to be down to the hundredths of seconds.

I hope the bulldog does not throw it, he tends to overcook it as claudio says.
