Qualifying Results from the Fort William DH World Cup 2022

Junior rider Jordan Williams riding to a top 5 TT lap for elite men this afternoon.

After a flat out practice and Timed Training session on the rough and rowdy Fort William course riders were back between the tape to fight for the top qualifying spots ahead of tomorrow's racing.

World Cup overall leader Camille Balanche took the top qualifying spot after a flying lap down the hill to beat Vali Höll by over one and a half seconds. Myriam Nicole wrapped up the top three but was over six seconds off the pace, it will be interesting to see if anyone can answer the speed of Camille tomorrow.

For the Elite Men Laurie Greenland backed up his Timed Training win to go fastest in qualifying by over two seconds. Charlie Hatton also followed up a great training result to second place today. Greg Minnaar is back at the top of things again with a third-place finish and just 2.490 seconds off teammate Laurie.

In the Juniors it was Phoebe Gale and Jackson Goldstone who went fastest and will be last down the hill tomorrow. It was a British top two for the Women as Pinkbike Racing's Aimi Kenyon secured 2nd place in qualifying.

Check out the full results below.

 Yeah Charlie Hatton!!

Junior men's battle is heating up! Weirdly similar to the Finn Iles V Matt Walker a few years back. Canadian superstar kid that's been in the spotlight for years already vs the speedy dark horse brit on the Saracen team! Gonna be a good one!
  • 10 0
Looks to be set for a great battle. Nice to see these big teams bringing on these younger riders.

Jackson was faster than Amaury today. That is incredible
  • 7 0
@bashhard: Jackson and Jordan Adams 3rd and 5th.
  • 4 1
 @bashhard: conditions..

 @PhilGyr: "Williams", but yeah!
  • 62 2
Greg in 3rd. The man is like the energizer bunny!
  • 36 0
It's actually incredible. He is actually getting faster with age. I'm sure 30 year old Greg couldn't keep up with 41 year old Greg.
  • 33 0
 Goats gotta goat.
  • 10 10
@humoroususername: To be fair, when he was 30 bikes weren't nearly as fast as they are today, I don't think 41 year old Greg could beat 30 year old greg on a stubby little 26 inch V10, 31 year old Greg probably would have been much faster than 40 year old greg on these new bikes, the tracks and bikes are more and more suited to him as they evolve.
  • 3 0
@inside-plus: when does the documentary come out?
  • 7 7
@jwdenver: His movie will be epic when it does. Idk why im getting downvotes, pretty logical on my part. Bikes are way easier to ride for older folks these days, smoother and more comfortable geos and the bikes is much logner for Greg which he has actually said in interveiws when they started to come out.

Try to process this information guys.
  • 6 0
@inside-plus: how dare you come up with a theory that makes sense.
  • 3 0
@inside-plus: this makes no sense. Loic Bruni is still ridiculously fast and also on an "easy" to ride bike yet Greg is still just as close to him in terms of speed as he was to Sam Hill back in 2009. Riders are definitely better now than they were back then as the sport is much more professional and riders start younger now...yet he is still able to beat them.

5 Brits in the top 10 currently, not too many to come down who are likely to upset that. Let's hope they can replicate it tomorrow!

@justanotherusername: why can’t he be a fan of a rider other than AG? It’s obvious your feelings were hurt LOL. You people make no sense.
  • 33 4
@SterlingArcher: ah yes being a fan of another rider definitely justifies putting down other riders. You make so much sense, person.
  • 16 5
@SterlingArcher: I do not know if it is just me, but his comment comes across as if he was taking the piss out of Gwin, which is not something you would do as a fan of the sport.
  • 16 5
@SterlingArcher: As Tanner said - of course you can be a fan of who you like, this isn’t some kind of tribal sport though, you don’t have to hate the other competitors without any justification.

You people make no sense. It’s obvious your feelings are hurt. LOL
  • 2 0
 How can that vee?
  • 10 8
Show me on the doll where the Gwin hurt you @somebody-else:
  • 2 3
@kazwei: seeing how Joe Breeden (2Cool and Dakota Nortan (23) your argument is void.

Also quite sure it’s top 100 qualify for finals. 101 is not in there. So as far as Neko is concerned, he’s in the same spot on AG
  • 1 1
@kroozctrl: you're right. My comment was not the most serious i ever wrote on PB, though

Jackson would’ve had 5th in elite…with Jordan Williams right behind. That’s some impressive stuff
  • 12 0
4th I think, but an insane result either way. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow.
  • 4 1
@shredddr: looks like you’re right. Even crazier. Especially considering some of the elites who didn’t even qualify

Good job AG! He’s killin it this year!!!!
  • 17 2
@justanotherusername: dudes been on a rant towards AG ever since he announced he’s moving. Dude made it super political and everything and just started name calling and getting pretty harsh with it. If you go look at that post, it’s just him going off. Something about AG is bothering him.
What doublecrownaddict is to YT Bikes, Sterlingarcher is to Aaron Gwin
  • 9 2
@stormracing: I suppose it’s the same with any sportsman or celebrity, we get a snapshot of their lives and personalities and form a view of them from a few pictures and 5 minute videos.

Some people are a*sholes, AG doesn’t seem to be one, of course you are free to dislike him for any reason though, even if it’s likely down to jealousy or as you say something political.
  • 10 1
@justanotherusername: AG seems like a class act humble guy to me! I find no reason to dig deeper and draw conclusions from nothing on the guy. I got nothing but respect for him. Hope he has a successful season. There will always be those people that root against. I guess so be it.
  • 7 0
 Gwin flatted apparently
  • 5 2
@LipBomb: Vee tyres + Fort William = Problems

(Assuming they aren't using sharpied up Maxxis of course)
  • 7 2
@SterlingArcher: I am sure on Gwins worst day he would ride circles around you. Real easy to be a hater.
  • 3 0
@LipBomb: Lots of people are waiting with hope that AGwinn regain the throne you once had.me included because he seems a nice guy and he is a fighter. In the good thays even without a chain he wins, now he is near from the top but if he dont get that bike down really fast with him on the handlebars he will let pass the chance.
  • 12 0
@lowejw: Gwin could smoke any joker posting on this page with his dick hanging out.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but certainly doesn't seem to be a bad bloke.
  • 2 0
@justanotherusername: personally I think he should go back to Onza. He got a good chunk of his wins with those tires.
  • 7 0
@kroozctrl: which were just sharpied Maxxis Minions.

  • 1 0
@GTscoob: I think he should go back to those sharpied Maxxis Minions at races. He is really going in the wrong direction. His tires choices are crazy. Kenda sucks. Vee probably isn't much better.
  • 10 0
Greg is an inspiration. The "old timer" placing top 10 consistently is just awe inspiring. He's never flamboyant, out of control, just up there. Unbelievable.
  • 2 0

I wonder what's happened to Phil Atwill this year? This is his second DNQ in a row and he wasn't very close. Last year he was pretty solid and if anything, it would seem like he'd have more backing this year.

  • 4 0
 @kornbrot: vee tires. Not vittoria.
  • 2 3
@Trudeez: ah. thanks. same same but different i guess.
  • 6 7
@kornbrot: not even close. Do some research. Vittoria beats the hell out of Cheng shin aka maxxis
  • 1 3
@Frank191: I ride/have ridden both brands on gravel and pedally MTBs. Wouldn't want either on a gravity focused bike though.
  • 1 2
@Frank191: but I see Vittoria has some heavier casings in their line up now. Maybe time to re-visit. Liked the compound.
  • 1 0
He just posted on Instagram that he had both a flat and a crash. Hopefully he can get things together for the rest of the year.
  • 1 0
@Frank191: You can't possibly be into DH and not rate Maxxis tyres. That would just be silly.
  • 1 0
 @kornbrot: absolutely not

Why cant AG run proven tires like the rest? Onza, Kenda, Now VEE? I dont get it.

Trying to make money at the cost of his career
  • 10 1
@Pmrmusic26: I'm a fan of Gwin but it seems like the slow fade away is real. I don't blame him, it's just that his tactical approach to racing a track is now apparently being channeled into a tactical approach to a comfortable retirement. It's a weird feeling watching it and understanding it, but wishing it was different.
  • 1 0
@LiveFreeorDie: yeah, happened to Valentino Rossi as well. Looks like they love racing or the atmosphere too much.
  • 6 0
Its an odd move being the best of the best and then deciding to run obscure brand brakes and tyres and switch frames often... everything that would go against a steady and succesful career.
  • 5 1
@ctd07: Aren’t they running TRP brakes? Not really obscure, commencal mucoff is running them as well
  • 2 0
@sudochuckwalla: they were brand new at the time with a prototype product for Gwin, even a recent interview with the commencal team said they took a while and some modifications to get them working how they wanted, and thats with the newest gen evo-dhrx4000turbosupermax gold versions
  • 4 0
@ctd07: he’s run TRP since YT Industries. And that’s where he got most of his wins outside of Trek.

The brakes aren’t the problem especially because Commencal/muc off also runs them.

He ran with Onza while he was on YT. So he’s proven he can win with those tires. Kenda for him, not so much.

He’s been using E.thirteen for a while.

It’s not the frame as Joe and Dakota have good seating in the finals.

He got a mechanical. It’s plain and simple
  • 2 0
@kroozctrl: I suggest to learn to read what is written not what you want to see, I simply put that it was an odd move in my first comment, I didnt bag out the brakes as I know they review very well, for the top pro of the time to move to obscure brands was an odd move, simple as that.
  • 11 4

Phoebe Gale was the next rider on track after the World Champion, Izabella Jankova in Junior Women and closed the 30 second gap, to pass Jankova on the finish line. I was watching with Phoebe’s folks and it’s fair to say that they were more than a little excited .
Times were close across all four categories, but so good to see Charlie and Laurie bringing the heat.

Best wishes for a quick recovery to whoever it is - I didn’t want to look too closely. We saw the stretcher coming down the gondola and transferred into the ambulance about 4pm or so. Full spinal board but that can easily just be a precaution. I might be mistaken but I think the rider still had their helmet on too. Not good.
