Qualifying Results from the Maribor World Cup DH 2021

Aug 14, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Loris Vergier came here to cut his number plate right down to size... fastest in TT.

After a flat out practice and Timed Training session on the revised Maribor track, riders faced a real challenge and with few lines to choose from it was all about raw speed. Camille Balanche and Loris Vergier went fastest in Timed Training, but qualifying is where we will really see how fast riders can hit the course.

In the Junior racing, Gracey Hemstreet and Jordan Williams came out fastest with some big winning margins against the rest of the field. Jordan Williams, the fastest rider in the Junior Men's category, crossed the line with a time good enough for an Elite top-four finish in yesterday's timed training.

Vali Höll is looking to be back up to full speed in Maribor as she goes nearly three seconds faster than Myriam Nicole to take the top qualifying time. Camille Balanche sits in third, 3.490 seconds off Vali Höll and Eleonora Farina is the only other Elite Woman to come within four seconds of the fastest time.

Loris Vergier backed up his fastest run in Timed Training with the top Qualifying time today. Thibaut Daprela is charging hard after his win in Les Gets and crossed the line in second after going green at every split. The race could be very tight between these two tomorrow a no other rider has been able to break the 3:10.085 time of Vergier's Timed Training run.

Check out the full results below.

Coulanges DNF, is he protected or should already throw my laptop containing my Fantasy team and thus the whole internet and my hopes for ever score a top ten in Fantasy league trough the window?
  • 22 0
 You're in luck. He's protected.
  • 27 0
If you could throw the whole internet out of the window that would be great. Then I don't have to go to work on monday and can go for a rip =D
  • 2 0
 would like to know to.
  • 6 0
@inonyme: He's protected. Go down to the quail start list article, and he has a P by his name on the roster.
  • 10 0
@swenzowski: Well if he is protected then you might have to work on Monday sorry, it looks like the future of humanity depends on UCI rules now
  • 6 0
protected but he can be injured , im praying for him too
  • 14 0
He had a puncture so he should be ok for the finals
  • 1 0
 @bashhard: That's great news!
  • 1 0
 Just a puncture
  • 1 0
 Oops, 2 late
  • 7 0
@swenzowski: apparently if you Google "Google" it breaks the internet
  • 1 0
 @Hogfly: feewww!
  • 3 0
@swenzowski: just say f()ck it all and go for a rip anyway

What this sport has come to, to only care about what riders can get us ahead in the Fantasy League game, to see them just as tokens to help us amass points for the prizes, to only value them for how worthy of points they are, for their cost/value to pursue our ambitions. Sad times we live in. But Daprela you better deliver tomorrow!
  • 2 1
@not-really: Root for Angel you Spanish poser!!!
my team is B. Kerr, Angel Alonso, Daprela and Vergier. I taught this would be the round to get me some sweet points but maybe its still possible even with BK out! The poser thing was a joke!!!!
  • 1 0
@madescape: haha Angel is on my team but not for being Spanish, rather because he could be any day on the top ten. He could have already, but had bad luck in the two first rounds- like the other last 15 guys to go down in Les Gets. But he is a solid top 20 bloke at a reasonable price like Kerr. You have a good team but sounds like you blown it all and didn't put much money aside for the women's?
  • 1 3
Coulanges is at the heart of my fantasy team, he's gonna deliver tomorrow. Long overdue for a win.
Benoit Coulanges $200,000
Andreas Kolb $150,000
Loris Vergier. $550,000
Charlie Hatton $125,000

Camille Balanche $425,000
Agnes Delest $10,000

Vergier is a given for top 3, he's not gonna have another bad luck day. Kolb and Hatten are young and fresh, ready to over-exceed. Also expect Minnar in the top 5.
Fully expect Holl to crash again in the dust on double 29" wheels and hand it over to Camille.

How many scrolled straight down to full results to see if Cathro quailied???

  • 6 1
Legit could not tell you who came first, but Ben is 84th
  • 2 0
Hopefully they still film his run….. you know, for the fans
  • 3 0
@Linkpin: 3ish seconds off qualifying, it’s not insurmountable but in this field it’s like climbing Everest
  • 1 0
 The people's winner

 Amazing result for Dan Slack.
  • 18 0
think im gonna puke....the boys rocking !!
  • 21 0
Tightest womens times I've seen in a while, only 7 seconds seperating the top 7 should provide for some good competition tomorrow!
  • 1 0
And Junior women top 5 are within 5 seconds.
  • 18 1
 Jordan Williams on a flyer!
  • 10 0
Wish we could see qualis live.
  • 13 4
Why not post the link? I hate the uci site. I can never find it.
  • 5 3
Just type uci live timing and scroll down on the site where the stops are shown Not too hard
  • 19 0
The trick is to never get tempted by the 'Website' links - the timing is at the bottom of the first page
  • 8 0
 Great job Gracey.
  • 4 0
And she doesn't even get to race the Worlds? Bummer!
  • 5 0
5 Canadians in the junior fields! Les gooooo!

  • 2 0
 Drum roll please
  • 6 0
Yeah, those provisional results mean nothing till the 139th rider is down!!
  • 2 0
@Dononemaccaboy: Neko Mulally is currently 48th... looks like is gonna be a tough battle to be on the start list even with few top guns down for hospital care
  • 5 0
@not-really: I'm not sure that there are 12 more top 60 riders left, but yeah... I love Neko and everything that he does for American racing... but I'm not sure that his time is best spent racing in Europe any longer. I'd love to see him transition into fulltime trailbuilding and DH Devo or maybe start managing a team.
  • 2 0
@Hogfly: I mentioned Neko just because he was close to the cut out point at the specific time, not for any particular reason and surprised to see few strong names out already which is good in the sense of the level of competition that there is. Also Serlock is out, so no Intense team racing this weekend. Shows how hard you have to work to get in.
  • 3 0
@not-really: For sure. I mean, Brendan and Harry Molloy both off the pace and out already and Maes finished behind Neko. It's crazy out there. I really hope Neko qualifies, as he's had a string of bad luck so far this WC season.
  • 2 0
 He's starting soon.
  • 2 0
 @Hogfly: IS SHOWTIME FOR BEN!
  • 2 0
 86th at the first split
  • 1 0
 Hopefully goes well!
  • 2 0
(Rob Warmer Voice) AND ITS...oh, red...
  • 2 0
damn that sucks cathro into 79th with a 3:24
  • 7 1
 @Hogfly: Is Ben Cathro protected?
  • 2 0
@jackheat: Looks like he had a crash in split 2, maybe we'll get a line choice video about it
  • 2 0
@not-really: Nope. Ben's racing is over for the weekend. More content for us!
  • 1 0
@not-really: nah the timing has been stuffed up for the splits, just ignore that and go of the end time
  • 1 0
Something is up with the timing on his run, at split 2 he 49 seconds back but at split 3 he is 'only' 43 seconds back suggesting that he made 6 seconds on Vergier between splits 2 and 3 which seems unlikely. Can anyone explain that?

Ignore, his splits have now been corrected
  • 1 0
@jackheat: you are right the live splits were incorrect
  • 1 0
What's the cut out? 50th place?
  • 3 2
@Hogfly: I wouldn't say Neko has had bad luck - he's just not WC material any longer, having not qualified for the last two WCs without injury or a mech.
  • 3 0
@rambotion2: but could you imagine his line choice analysis video if he had put 6s into Vergier? "Well I was only here for a bit of fun, but using my giraffe legs I bunny hopped all the normal lines and ended up with he top split of the weekend!"
  • 3 0
@neimbc: If I remember correctly, he was on qualifying pace in the first WC and then had a red flag, so had to rerun and had a crap second run. But your point still stands, and I agree that he's not really on pace to be competitive any longer in Europe (as stated in my post previously in the thread)

But hey! He qualified today.
  • 4 0
Ok so is not 50th but 60th the cut out point, so that makes Ben roughly 3 seconds away from making it which shows to privateers and anybody trying to get into the WC scene how tight the level is, but also how if you set your goals and work on where you want to be, well you might be at least fighting for it. 3 seconds away from people at factory teams seems already like a win on its own, so congratulations to him and everyone else with less support trying hard to get a chance to race and inspiring other to do the same. And super excited for the stacked field of women who are all closing the time gaps between each other and rising the level in each race!
  • 4 1
Would you say this to Neko’s face? I hear he is very approachable when he is putting on regional races and building bike parks to help the next generation. If a racer has the fire to keep competing then why not? Is it offensive to you that he doesn’t make the top ten? @Hogfly:
  • 5 1
 @robway:

There’s probably not a bigger Neko Mullally fan out there who isn’t related to him. I have so much respect for him as a rider and even more respect for his work to grow the American DH scene. Living more or less in the southeast, I want nothing more than to see him keep building and developing our scene.

It doesn’t offend me at all to see him still competing, and I love listening to him and Elliot recap the races on the Downtime podcast. He should race as long as he’s able, but selfishly, I think his bigger contributions to DH will be in how he develops the scene more than his results at World Cups.
  • 5 0
Poor Dante Silva. Top 20 through all splits until final section and must have had some mechanical to finish in last. No racing for him.
  • 7 0
Most impressed by Laurie. Very steezy, and top with time too.
  • 3 0
Vergier and Daprela casually putting over 3 seconds on the 3rd on a tight times track. Vergier is arguably the fastest riderof these last two season but bad luck struck him hard so far.
  • 1 0
What is Vergier doing on the last asphalt corner??
  • 1 1
@snomaster: Everybody is up in the woods watching. I suspect the last corner isn't a game changer in the dry.
  • 1 0
@snomaster: Daprela was ahead all the way to the last split, I wonder if he made a mistake, or did Vergier do something pretty special to pull that 0.7 back in the last sector.
  • 5 0
I want to see Holl win or get down without crashing just to get that monkey off her back.
  • 4 0
agreed, so much potential and hype but yet to really deliver as a senior and it may be getting to her
  • 5 0
 Great Quali by Dan Slack…
  • 6 0
 Ya Gracey!
  • 4 0
Great job Neko! Bummed for Brendog.
  • 2 0
Jordan Williams (junior) time would squeeze him right in between Brosnan and Bruni at 8th mens elite... Fast lil rippers out there!!
  • 3 0
Patrick Laffey was on a heater until the 4th split, I hope he’s ok.
  • 4 0
 Greg is stil there..
  • 1 0
Look at the quali time! Still in touch I think to take a top 3 finish I think Smile
  • 1 0
In the top 30 qualifiers, Remi Thirion is the only guy who isn't at least 10 years younger than him, and even he is 9 years younger. I really want him to get a podium, or even a win! next year when he's 40.
  • 4 1
Martin Maes qualified 55th with 160mm travel enduro bike...
  • 2 0
Not the fastest dad, by a wide margin.
  • 3 0
@mi-bike: Think that title goes to Dany Hart
  • 1 2
Excellent time for Martin considering he's on an enduro, and is an enduro racer primarily
  • 3 0
@m1dg3t: also maybe not an excellent time considering that in 2018, being primarily an enduro racer, he won the DH world cup in La Bresse and grabbed silver at the DH Worlds. Here's hoping he can turn it on for the final tomorrow.
  • 4 0
Imho that just shows that dh bikes are still much more capable for dh...
  • 1 0
 @ThrillPhil46: Agreed 100%
  • 1 0
He was chatting about how his 160mm/190mm bike was great for manoeuvrability, but from the sounds of it manoeuvrability is not what is needed on this fast and rough track. Perhaps he would do better on this set up somewhere a bit more technical with a bit more line choice
  • 1 3
@ThrillPhil46: wow, what a revelation. Who'd have thought?
  • 1 0
@ajayflex: Apparently some people here think otherwise.
  • 3 0
 Nice work Tuhoto - Ariki.
  • 2 0
 yannick baechler on fire!!!!
  • 2 0
What happened to Finn Iles? Is he still able to race?
  • 3 0
As always the Bernhard Kerr LSD Channel comes through for us. See around 11:02 in this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZst6BDcDuE&ab_channel=BernardKerr . Looks like Finn fractured a small bone in his hand, so is hopeful for Val di Sole but isn't racing at Maribor.
  • 2 0
Walker Shaw; is this his first WC? Can't recall if so.
  • 1 0
He qualified for one back in 2017.

I saw that... never heard of the guy???
  • 1 0
@Eatsdirt: I've vaguely heard the name on the US circuits but that's it. Hence my surprise.
  • 2 0
Oh man, what happened to Bernard??
  • 2 0
I think he got an injury yesterday, which sucks big time! Course seems to be taking a few riders out!
  • 2 0
@Istillneedstabilisers: Thanks mate. He just threw some vids on his YT channel. Yeah, a bunch of boys have broken hands, Wyn, Bernard, Finn. Sucks!
  • 2 0
Bernard washed out coming off a bit which crosses the grassy ski run back into the woods, on the face of it quite a harmless bit of track but seemed to catch a couple out
  • 1 0
Dan slack ripping first year elite and actually only been riding afew years
  • 1 0
What happened to Luke Meier Smith, 11th in timed training? Mystery Propain rider.

  • 1 2
 Get woke.
  • 1 0
Jordan was flying today! Go get it tomorrow!
  • 1 0
What does protected mean? How do you get protected?
  • 2 0
Protected means that you'll still race even if you're not fast enough during quallys.

You can be protected if you ranked in the top ten in the previous season or if you're in the top ten in the current season, excluding the top ten from the previous year (so since Matt Walker won last year, he's protected this season but doesn't count for one of the top ten of this season).

Cathro gives a good explanation of how it works here- www.pinkbike.com/news/video-ben-cathro-explains-uci-protected-rider-rule-2018-start-list.html
  • 2 2
Jessica blew itt between Split 2 and 3. Otherwise she could have been top5.

Bummed for Brendog but happy for B-Cat
  • 1 0

  • 8 1
 O'time will O'tell!
  • 2 0
It doesn't say a 'P' next to his name on the startlist, so who knows!
  • 2 0
No, he's out according to his Instagram. Had a crash in the last sector. Looked on course for 2nd or 3rd. Pity.
  • 1 0
 @humoroususername: That's a shame
  • 1 0
 @rambotion2: O'shame*
