Dak and Gwin seem to be good for each other. I'd say Dak has brought a great vibe to that Intense team this year.
  • 28 1
Excited for Dak. After last B practice podcast, he indicated that he’s starting to get his mental game down. He’s very high stress and serious. And he just decided to have fun at Worlfd. And it worked. Looks like it’s working here too

Doubt it , by looking at the videos spending anymore than 10 minutes with him would be a headache.

@Conan2015: sounds like you would be a treat to hang with

@cdkozeluh: @Conan2015: He's on B Practice Podcast every episode, and he's pretty hilarious. He is known as being extremely intense and serious during race stuff.. and he acknowledges that it might not be helpful. But that's just how he's responded to pressure in the past. Once he was out of the running for the overall result he wanted this year, he loosened up.. and his results have gotten better.

@cdkozeluh: nah as you can tell I’m a miserable c*nt.

Wife and I rode down the gondola with his mechanic at MSA 2018. He was stoked to see some other Americans (from Texas) and introduced us to Dak in the pits. Dude couldn't have been more humble, appreciative and cool to talk to, particularly when its race day. Later, Dak chased us down when were leaving and gave us some of his team cards for our girls. We've been fans ever since.

Stoked to see his results at worlds and in Italy.

These comments have got me wondering what percentage of pinkbike readers are currently benched. We need a poll:
Are you/have you been off the bike with an injury:
-Right now
-This season
-Within the last two seasons
Etc
Was it your:
-Collarbone
-AC/rotator cuff/other shoulder
-Tib/fib
-Wrist
Etc

  • 2 0
Awesome from Kolb, so pleased for him, but not the fastest on the day, Jordan Williams more than a second up. Did Jrs have similar track conditions?

Jordan and Jackson have pushed each other so hard this year, can't wait to see what they do in Elites next year.
  • 1 0
@Bollox64: rode Charlie’s race bike from last year at Dyfi bikepark a few months ago, was unreal how much grip it had yet also rolled really fast.

  • 3 0
@big-scot-nanny: An Atherton DH Bike will be my retirement present to myself. They look fantastic and everyone that has ridden one raves about them. I see Kolb and Charlie Hatton fairly regularly at Dyfi - both seem really down to earth. Delighted for everyone involved with Atherton Bikes.

Except Vali - Camille, Myriam and Nina arrived with a huge gap or DNF - anyone knows if all three are ok?
  • 8 0
@whiteboarder: I'm sure Camille will be saving her collar bone on such a physical track. She'll be taking the start tomorrow for sure.

  • 16 0
@whiteboarder: Pompon had a flat based on Commencal Instagram. I thought the times looked a little like that. Hoffmann apparently went off the track at some point, not a proper crash as such and seems to be all good. Haven't seen anything on Cami yet.

 Thabk You! @donimo:
  • 10 2
@weebleswobbles: a genuine one with actual people and not filled with crap and ads that some algorithm is shoving up your throat to learn more about you.
  • 2 4
@weebleswobbles: not really its a mountain bike magazine with a comments section! with your logic chain reaction cycles is also social media as its got a comments section under each product!
  • 6 3
@whiteboarder: I get what you're saying, BUT...this site is plastered with ads and videos that include paid promotions, you can "follow" different users, you get notified when people respond to you, randos slide in your your DMs, anybody can post an article...

It might take a different form, but it definitely is social media.
  • 1 1
@pmhobson: can you post an artical to the front page? i thought you had to be part of pinkbike for that!

also even mention politics and your comment gets deleted so its not social media!!!
  • 2 0
@pmhobson: you sure you are talking about pinkbike?

none of that for me - and sponsored content and/or outside articles are easy enough to identify…

you don’t need to check them out and above all, all the relevant content still is pouring in (mostly) by date.

none of that is true for ig, fb, the likes…

plus: one if the greatest communities out there!
  • 1 1
@waxed: My understand is that unsolicited user-generated content can make it to the front page if the editors think it's worth putting promoting. Also, context gets deleted off of "actual" social media all the time. Companies like facebook employ hordes of moderators around the world removing posts and users constantly. Hell, Twitter famously banned a former world leader
  • 1 0
@whiteboarder: Budget vs Baller, Full Enduro, PB Academy, all included paid promotions. Sometimes it feels like most of the articles posted each day are press releases (unambiguously labeled as) written by the brands.

I agree that following users and DMs and notifications aren't a major part of the site, but it's all there.
  • 2 0
@whiteboarder: I saw Nina go off track today, just washed the front end and low-sided off track, no injury. Fwiw, she looked the fastest of all the women I saw in quali’s.

Looks like Jordan Williams will have fastest quali time of the day!

 Unreal! Good for him.

Valentina Roa progressing up the ranks! I think I remember Metailler suggesting how much potential he thought she had.
  • 5 0
That’s who he did that one video with? Yeah she shreds. Thanks for the reminder - will have to keep an eye on her.
  • 10 0
I might get downvoted.. but she has to leave colombia very soon to go full potential. It's not that the country does not have good mountains/tracks.. but hm, inner circle of people and some other things are not in favor... she has to listen to the succesful guys there..
  • 4 0
@Lagr1980: I wouldn't really know, but Colombia has had plenty of success stories... Nairo Quintana, Mariana Pajón...
  • 3 0
@mexicanoportugal: yeah.. different generation.. cycling in general is huge in colombia and MTB is big, very very popular.. and you can see guys coming to WC.. but there should be more (huge talent) relative to the size of the sport in the country.. Its my 42 yo dad mentality.. I'll save my specific comments on why athletes like her should leave and train outside, permanently.
  • 3 0
Valentina is the one to watch next year in juniors. Also Izabela, Gracey, Phobe and Jenna will make more interesting women elites.
  • 3 0
@Lagr1980: that’s no myth she should train/live in Europe. Happens the same to riders in the US (Except Gwin) that want to get the highest level possible.
Or what are your non disclosed ideas?
  • 3 0
@Lagr1980: Your sentiments hold merit, but remember, athletes don't always need the best coaches, they need the right coaches.
  • 1 0
@Lagr1980: it’s kinda weird tbh, the team she’s on is run by a small bike shop based in Pennsylvania in the US, but she’s Columbian and doesn’t come to the states where she’d have more support at races.
  • 8 0
@TheSlayer99: as you may or may not know we, Colombians, have a nice past due to sh!t people. So we need visas to practically everywhere (thankfully UE not), so when she tried to apply the first time for the US visa pandemics, current history made the process even longer. It was until this year she could get hold of one.

Just to renew the US visa rn we have to wait til ‘25!
  • 9 0
@TheSlayer99: Probuilds is legit, they've been honing their craft on the east coast DH circuit for a long time. They're not just some random small bike shop.
  • 1 0
@withdignityifnotalacrity: I’m aware of the probuilds team. They have an incredibly stacked team of riders who have competed on the EWS and World Cup circuit this season.
  • 16 0
Interesting: Kolb comes in 1st in quali... and he also took Gold in the Timed Training, by more than 3 seconds.... still looking for official results of the Track Walk....

Man, the guy's living the dream this weekend.

Amaury won track walk, didn't you see those shorts?
  • 19 2
4 seconds on Goldstone!!! That rainbow jersey !!
  • 26 0

I wonder if it's raining. Lots of weird time through the field.

  • 3 3
We usually see this when Jackson makes a mistake!
  • 6 0
 @thingswelike: I’m here. It’s moon dust dry
  • 5 1
These 2 are an another level. 15 Seconds from Jackson to 3rd place! Jordan's time would have won elite, and Jacksons would be 3rd! Next year is going to be interesting with them going into elite.
  • 4 0
@Trailsoup: you mean the one qualifier of the year that no one cares about? Lol
  • 13 0
Oliver Zwar is really stepping up this season.
  • 2 0
Yeah I think that WC result gave him some extra juice. If he can have another solid finish this race he'll be one to watch next year.
  • 13 0
 Finn isles dns??
  • 3 0
On track walk he was saying his neck was still real sore from the practice crash last race, so figure he wasn't able to get it good enough.
  • 8 1
I saw that too. Does that not hand the overall to Amaury?
  • 6 0
@TrueScotsman: yes, and means he is free to go full gas tomorrow to try to win the race!
  • 4 2
 He is protected, though, right?
My Fantasy Team is counting on him..
  • 10 0
@pyromaniac: protected yes, but one has to at least roll through the gate in qualies to be allowed to race. A dns means he won't be participating tomorrow
  • 5 0
@pyromaniac: Finn has an DNS in Quali, so he's not allowed to start tomorrow in Finals and wont score any points.
Therefore Amaury has already won the overall.
  • 6 0
@pyromaniac: Still need to break the beam on Quali run, otherwise you're out of the race. Like what Cami did, DNF instead of Finn DNS.
  • 2 0
 Bugger! Hoping he is OK.
  • 3 2
@pyromaniac: I too went with Finn. Full regret.
  • 4 0
@bashhard: Dang... The chances of AP losing it tomorrow were Rizla thin anyway, so it's probably wise. I'd like to see a Pierron fun run, like Emil J does on every single one of his second slopestyle runs.
  • 2 0
@pyromaniac: Yeah, worried too. If you can't even roll out of the gates you must be pretty injured, wouldn't you? Could he now even lose his second place in the overall, depending on the outcome of the finals?
  • 19 0
@vinay: He was out with a head injury earlier this year and now has another, he just doesn't want to risk anything. I wouldn't say it is not serious, but I don't think it is that horrible of an injury. Think about the position Finn is in. He is finally getting consistent good results and he accomplished something amazing this year, his first WC win while doing it in Canada. The kid has a lot to be thankful for after this season and is just thinking about his long term goals.
  • 4 0
@vinay: he could lose 2nd overall, but only if Loris Vergier wins the race.
  • 11 0
@pisgahgnar: He said the crash made his entire body feel like a funny bone smashed on a table. Yeesh...
  • 2 0
 @andrewbmxmtb: which is possible
  • 5 0
Ok, fair. His chances of winning the overall are existent but smaller than the chances of him dominating a future race season, if he just takes proper care of his health now.
  • 8 0
@andrewbmxmtb: 2nd or 3rd overall for Finn (with him missing two rounds) is still pretty impressive.
  • 2 0
@BenPea: "stingers" are no joke. I got one in football practice in high school and was immediately like "WTF". Lost all motivation for that sport immediately...
  • 1 0
@BigHerm: Now I think of it, a similar thing happened to me when I lost an argument with a rut at mach chicken nearly 20 years ago.
  • 11 1
How is this not in the headline? Pierron wins the overall and they don't even mention it? Wake up Pinkbike.
  • 2 1
@commental: this is what I was thinking
  • 2 0
Gutted for Finn... and disappointed that Amaury automatically gets the title in consequence. Happy for him, but itt kills the suspense that the course would have offered.
  • 1 1
@commental: Maybe to keep the suspense for the finals, hoping that no one notices?
  • 1 0
@vinay: Shit. Red Bull's last broadcast is a lame duck! Yes yes, the women, but still.
  • 4 0
@BenPea: Nah, Val di Sole isn't quite a track for such a duck. A challenging track will always make for amazing riding. And amazing riding makes for good viewing. The end result is just a number. And the womens, that's quite something in my book. I'm really rooting for Camille. To keep the lead in the overall but even more to not get hurt. She has this amazing mentality to not go all out at the start of the race but then crawl back in the technical lower sections where others are losing and overcooking it. I think she can still spend many years at the top with a mindset like that so I don't want to see her get injured even worse, now that she's racing whilst not completely fit. Yet I also want to see her rewarded the overall after such a great season. So yeah, that's exciting in my book.

As for the mens, even if Finn would have competed. A 249pt difference wouldn't make for a nailbiter. Would Amaury finish last? He's a wild rider, but he's clever enough to, for once, not put everything on the line.
  • 1 0
@vinay: It's a bummer for Finn, but on the plus side Amaury doesn't have to rein it in and can go for the 5 wins. It should be a good race, I really hope everyone gets the same conditions.
  • 1 0
@commental: The best riders in the most shite conditions make for the most memorable races. Think Champery. But fair enough, it didn't always work for Lourdes.
  • 1 0
@vinay: Wet races can be the best. I just hope it's wet for everyone if so.
  • 1 0
@vinay: Gwin parting the brown sea in MSA.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: whoa where did you hear that?

 @bmccrady: Cathro vid maybe.

Roger Vieira on fire. Only top 20 qualify without a team. Please someone get him a team support.
  • 5 0
Surely he'll get snapped up for next year, he's been laying down some great runs the last few races.
  • 6 0
The only real intrigue going into the races tomorrow involves the Women Elite Overall.
Cami Balanche is 119 points ahead of Vali Holl and 180 ahead of Myriam Nicole.

Cami is starting 9th out of 18 riders.
Myriam is 10th out of the gate, and Vali goes last.
.
If Cami places 4th or higher, she wins the Overall no matter what Vali or Pompon do.
.
If Cami finishes 5th, Vali can take the Overall by winning the race. (She'd win by 1 point, 1466 to 1465.)
.
If Cami finishes 9th, Pompon can tie with Cami by winning the race. (They'd each have 1405 points, and it would depend on how Vali finishes to determine the Overall.)
.
No idea if there's a tiebreaker if 2 racers end up in a tie in the Overall standings.
  • 3 0
If it's a tie, I believe they look at number of wins.
  • 8 0
Could someone explain 18 DNS in Men Elite??? Ok I understand that the "Black Snake bites" but daaaamn
  • 6 0
Dang, I was hoping Ronan Dunne and Loris Revelli would do well here, they seemed to be building great momentum later in the year but I don't see either in the top 60. Stoked for Kolb though!
  • 9 0
 GO DAKOTAH!
  • 8 0
 Let's go Dak and Gwin!!!!
  • 6 0
ROGER VIERA P18 WITHOUT SPONSOR HES ON FIRE, SOME TEAM SHOULD HIRE HIM FOR THE NEXT SEASON
  • 7 0
Holy shit Kolb is on fire
  • 4 0
Roger Vieira sure is a guy that deserves to be on a factory team, top 20 of the world beeing a privateer rider. Taking Brazil to the top!!
  • 6 3
I am confused. No points so it doesn't matter. So it's basically timed training. So it's all that matters. Basically it's Timetraining final run? Will there be any slowing on purpose?

Qualifying runs award World Cup points
  • 2 0
It‘s part of the mental game.
  • 13 0
@jjamms: I seem to recall that there's no quali points at the final race. Comments below saying the same thing.

I'm wrong a lot, though...
  • 2 0
@h0rnyunic0rnie: no points in the last race so that the overall wouldn’t be decided by qualifiers. Not a perfect solution in my opinion but…
  • 10 0
I guess someone forgot to tell that to Andreas Kolb.
  • 14 0
Still need to make the cut if you're not protected right?
  • 6 0
Quali still determines race start time though surely?
  • 3 0
Yeah it's time training and add to that an uncertain weather...Good old tactical on the way!
  • 2 1
@thingswelike: Yeah, but is that something risking your health and energy (hence opportunities at the finals) for? I'm still curious why a rider would push it these qualifiers.
  • 3 0
@thingswelike: Yip. It's the only race where you can really weaponize the weather, if you think you can predict it to the nearest minute. www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/week/val-di-sole_italy_8972033?day=2
Rain will hit the mountain at the perfect time to screw shit up. "Thankfully" it won't mess with the men's overall (the winner anyway - it appears to be all done), but we're going to see some crazy bids for a victory on the day.
  • 7 0
@vinay: Maybe worth a bit of a risk to get on telly (top 30ish)
  • 7 0
No points, but you still have to qualify. It doesn't matter at all for protected riders, but for non-protected riders, they still need to make the top 60.
  • 1 0
@toast2266: Alright, clear. Sounds like a tricky goal. How hard should you push if you're not protected? Push too hard and you may be risking too much, push it too little and you may land just outside that top 60. At least in the regular qualifications you'll also be after some points so it pays finish well.
  • 2 0
Fair point, actually. Time is finite, and if I don't have time to watch the race in real time, I'll often only go back and watch the top riders. Or forget the race was on and only catch the back half. A lot of early riders won't get the same exposure or level of interest as the top qualifiers. More ppl will know Kolb's name, simply because he's the last man down.

Bulldog DNS, hope he is ok
  • 3 0
Since Finn is out does Amaury even have to race tomorrow? Obviously he will and he is now the world cup champ for the year, but could he technically sit out the race and still win?
  • 5 0
Yes, but I'm 100% he is not going to do that
  • 3 0
Means he can go full gas for the win.
  • 3 0
@heatproofgenie: He might save it for French Champs next weekend. That's the real contest.
  • 4 0
I'm sure the rest of the Junior Men are ready for Goldstone and William's to move to elites! Ridiculous times from junior riders!
  • 5 0
Dan Slack is an excellent mountain bike name
  • 4 0
As of right now, Jordan Williams is the fastest qualifier. Juniors and Elite w/ Jackson sitting 4th.
  • 4 0
Don't get too excited yet boys, the real Champ, Cathro, has not even hit the track yet.
  • 3 0
Came down into 71st. No final for the big man this time Frown
Looked pinned in practice too!
  • 1 0
Looks like Thibault Laly is in though.

Some of these gaps are crazy.

I"m curious how much of it is track condition related. It seems to change drastically pretty quickly.

I mean Holl is 17 seconds up on 5th place. She definitely has that type of speed in her but it's scary to think what she can do with her finals speed. Myriam was green at 1 so maybe if she can stay on 2 wheels she can beat her. But if those speeds across the boards are even close to finals days she's the only one that can stay close if holl stays upright.

Hemstreet has 16 seconds on SECOND place.

Jackson 4 seconds off the back in second.

Men's race looks reasonably close but there's even some big gaps there. 7 seconds to 5th. Cool seeing Gwin up there. He's been progressively getting closer as the year has gone on. I really hope he can pull a top 3. It would be insane to see what kind of focus that gives him for next season.

 Höly Val!
  • 5 0
 Kolb on fire!
  • 5 0
 Ah shit. Finn DNS
  • 3 0
Lots of great riders missing out on quali: Ed Masters, Ronan Dunne!, Baptiste Pierron, Antoine Vidal
  • 1 0
 Oh Baptiste was protected. Cool.
  • 1 0
Curious why. Injured, or is Wyn not the only one with covid after Les Gets?
  • 4 0
I think Jess has it in her for this weekend!
  • 5 0
 This is the one, Dak!
  • 3 0
Dak and Gwin in the top 5! I would love to see Dak put down a solid one and see Gwin continue his comeback.
  • 3 1
WTF, it was said that Finn Iles was gonna "give it a go" and now its DNS... Damn
  • 7 0
Having seen the track preview, and the amount of tape he had holding his head on during the track walk, i'd say he's made the right decision. There was almost no chance of him winning the overall, and the only way he can lose his second place is if Vergier wins.
  • 2 0
@andrewbmxmtb: sure, you're absolutely right , the man's gotta heal himself F1rst . No doubt about it . by the pace he carried this year i have a feeling that 2023 is gonna be a killer season for him
  • 2 0
@anonimous666: Finn Iles was on another level this year, being consistent and fast. If he had not missed the second DH this year and this final DH then Amaury might have had to fight for the overall. Gutted that he cannot race this weekend but 2023 will be a heater.
  • 2 0
In some respects I think it's probably for the best. He suffered a concussion in Les Gets, there's more and more evidence that 2 concussions in quick succession can be very damaging.
  • 2 0
He did not ride the 2 compulsory training runs so he cant start for quali... in a french video kev joly (his mechanic) explain that the only way he would ride is if he was 100%... which is not the case...

He also says that if riding, Finn had the same chance to take the overall than to have a date with shakira...

And finallybthat if he ends up 2nd or 3rd overall, this would be a good season anyway with all the lows they had and missing 2 rounds....
  • 3 0
Reece Wilson back at it... good man!
  • 3 0
Traded Kolb for Isles thinking he would go all out. Fantasy Fail
  • 2 0
You’re not alone…. With minutes left I made the same swap. Oops.
  • 1 0
 @nateb: I’m still pissed
  • 1 0
any info on why Valentina Roa Sanchez is not here at Val di Sole?, would seem like prime opportunity to secure a trade team deal afte the world champs
  • 2 0
No Ethan Craik? I was just listening to him on the Downtime podcast…
  • 2 0
 Good quali for Pinkerton!
  • 1 0
So glad for the update that Finns not in before the rosters locked…oh wait, that didn’t happen.
  • 2 0
the Men junor time are just
  • 2 0
Must be wet with those time gaps.
  • 1 0
I don't know exactly where the track is, but it looks sunny on the Val di Sole bike park webcam.
  • 2 0
@andrewbmxmtb: I’m here. It’s really moon dust dry. Lots of hidden roots below the dust
  • 1 0
Commencal Muc-off's Instagram stories indicate there was a few rain showers before Amaury's run that made the track a little different, although it still looked dry-ish so probably not too much change
  • 2 0
Exsqueeze me? Baking Powder. Jordan… lord that dude is quick.
  • 1 1
 Healing vibes my dudes!
On another note, Harry Molloy in 47th and in the big show!
Local lad on for a comeback?!
Let’s go!

Just noticed something. Goldstone and Kolb only 2 people in split 1 under 55.
  • 2 0
No Finn??? No Brosnan??? What happened???
  • 2 0
 These results are pretty Intense.
  • 1 0
Kolb and the Atherton bike crew have been on it this year, good stuff and good luck .
  • 2 0
 Let's go ROGER!!! BRAZIL!!!
  • 1 0
Can you deserve quali points in this last round?
  • 3 0
 No quali points.
  • 1 0
those Juniors need to slow down !!
  • 2 0
 Vali Höll!
  • 2 0
Yep. I've been waiting for this for two years! This is what she does! Rolls out of the start gate last in rainbow stripes and wins! She's back in them and well... don't want to jinx it but she's used to those colours!
  • 1 0
Yessss! One more race - go Vali!
  • 1 0
Are there points for qualifying results in this round?
  • 4 0
No points for quali in final round. I believe it is so the overall can only be decided in the race ( if it hasn’t already been won )
It would be an anticlimax if it was won in the last quali vs the race
  • 1 0
@gcrider: I thought that, but I couldn’t find the info. Thanks
  • 1 0
Ben Cathro believes there are quali point up for grabs in his latest video.......
  • 1 0
@gcrider: And yet that's happened anyway.
  • 1 0
Is the quali results the order that they will start in tomorrow?
  • 2 0
In reverse, yes. World Champs is the only weird one where quali doesn't really matter.
  • 2 0
@pisgahgnar: Thanks. Just looked like a few riders weren't really trying? Maybe the weather is looking bad for later on?
  • 2 0
@Pedal-Bin: possibly that, it's also a brutal track and qualifying isn't worth any points for this race. I'm sure many riders were taking it easy
  • 2 0
 Anyone seen the Hoff?
  • 2 0
I don't know what happened, but she came down in 17th nearly a minute after Vali, losing time in all splits. She still qualifies as a protected rider though.
  • 1 0
@andrewbmxmtb: Regarding insta she came off the track pretty early, rolled down and made some more mistakes...
  • 2 0
 Andreas on a heater
  • 1 0
 Damn them juniors are fast
  • 1 0
Friendly reminder that none of this matters until tomorrow
  • 1 0
So excited to see how Jordan and Jackson do next year.
  • 1 1
No Ben Cathro or Wyn Masters, wish we could have a format like not a race, where everyone gets a run regardless.
  • 1 0
Flo payet made it for the last dance tomorrow!
  • 1 0
Austria! Not bad for a small country...
  • 1 0
Junior men would have been 1 and 3 in elite
  • 1 0
 Brayton for EWS
  • 1 0
 Neko?????
  • 3 0
 53rd. He's in
  • 1 0
 Brosnan?
  • 2 0
Flat tire, protected from being top 10 last year so he’ll still be racing tomorrow!
  • 1 0
 austrian double machine!
  • 1 0
 Kolb for the win!
  • 1 1
 No Finn……
