@martin737: no, he's outraged that the West has cruelly neglected to invite riders from the DPRK and denounces the European hegemony of first class mountain bike racing. He's yet to decide whether to turn Switzerland into "the mouth of hell" by raining down nuclear missiles "of tasty, tasty vergence."
@egb81: NK can barely hit the water between them and Japan. Make it all the way to Switzerland with nukes??? I doubt their nukes can leave the launch pad before exploding. So I hope he trys it.
@Boardlife69: the fearless and immortal leader says his network of nefarious evil doers have successfully sabotaged every one of Gwin's world champ runs in order to smite the imperialist pig dogs from claiming the fabled rainbow jersey. I wouldn't test him if I were you, else Nino Schurter might mysteriously snap his chain!
@martin737: POTUS doesn't know what a bike is. The glorious leader refers to POTUS as a 'tangerine shit gibbon'. He's much more polite about Gwin, though I hear he favours Phil Atwill because of his effortless style and ability to keep it real on a hardtail.
So there are 106 rider in the quali list. Top 80 + protected riders going through. Come on UCI, just give everyone the possibility to represent their country. It's World Champs man!
Being selected by USA Cycling just gets your name on the start list really. You still gotta get yourself and bike to Switzerland, and contrary to popular belief, women are still not as well supported in this industry (especially outside the Top 5 World Cup ranked).
@Boardlife69: there is a whole system who they pay for and what each level get. I think Luca and Gwin get paid for (like the team wouldn’t) after there it’s all partial. I remember the jrs in previous years had go fund me setup to get donations to help pay.
@mfoga: Thanks for the imput. It seems its a shame that the U.S cant afford to send a whole team considering how many bike companies are based in the U.S.
Why is Martin Maes a protected rider? I thought you had to have a high enough ranking and I would be surprised if taking part, and winning, 1 race was enough
New rule this year......top 20 elite men and top 10 elite women in the last World Cup overall rankings are protected and can ride the finals regardless of their result in the qualifying round.
Maes ended up 20th in the World Cup overall.
Can someone explain why there is qualifying in the first place? As a Canadian I'm not allowed to watch the broadcast so I won't be there to hear Rob explain it.
Not one female Canadian junior rider? Too bad so many young female shredders out there on our BC trails. Ladies remember Holly Feniak took in 2012. That could be you!
Seem like GOAT is still Kim's favorite though...
