Quiz: Can You Guess the Bike Brand from the Headtube Badge?

Dec 22, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

Although it doesn't serve any functional purpose, a nice headtube badge can really make a bike feel special. Much like Jaguar or Rolls Royce in the car world, some brands go all-out and manufacture a plaque for the front of the bike, whereas for others, it's can be a graphic included in the paint job.

Whatever the case, do it right and it should make your bike instantly recognisable. Below are 25 headtube badges to take a guess at. The quiz starts easy but will get harder as you go through. Any brand names in the headbadges have been blurred out so you can just read the answer. Let us know how you got on in the comments at the bottom of the quiz.

@LuvAZ: people who hate on Yeti:
1. Those who can’t afford one. (fair enough, I might be bitter as well)
2. Those who have never ridden one.
3. A combo of #1 & #2
LOL and no I don’t work on people’s teeth...

  • 11 1
@kosumo: You didn’t really think about that comment too much eh?
  • 11 2
@Golden-G: I had one. Was seriously underwhelmed. Not a bad bike, but I am much happier on my brother's YT and my personal Devinci this year. Also preferred the Specialized Enduro I bought last year after having the SB150 for about 5 months and even the Scott Ransom I demoed for a month in New Zealand.

So literally, every bike I've ridden in the last two years I preferred over the $9500 Yeti I had for 5 months and they all cost between $4500 and $5500.
  • 4 5
 @Golden-G: @Golden-G:

1. I Can afford one but didn't find it to be a world beater of a design

2. Rode an SB150 for I think 5 days? (buddy was out of town so got to keep it for a bit), great handling bike but wasn't a fan of the feeling I needed to move a lot on the bike to achieve the right weight balance in corners and what not. I really enjoy the feel and response from bikes using a 4 bar design so it didn't deliver what I am used to and enjoy, totally a personal thing but hey, its my money right?

3. Nope

@rockyj: A heads up. commenting with your spelling corrections will get you down voted hard. Not entirely sure why this is but based on my own experiences people don't like spelling corrections... Its a weird world here at PinkBike.

I do gotta ask. Is "Radness" a word? And is it a measurable unit that can achieve a level in which many folks cant handle it?

  • 3 0
@cueTIP: interesting. I had the opposite experience. Liked the sb150 and the ransom way more than my enduro. But at least u tried it. I also dont get the price hate. Isnt their top end price about equal to spec enduro, megatower...?

@WAKIdesigns: At your age you should know better than using phrases like "Woke AF"
Act your age, not your shoe size.
  • 6 0
@cueTIP @TheBearDen: these are reasonable responses to yeti bikes. Some people just prefer others. But the pejorative put downs over the price is a bit ridiculous considering many of the NON DTC boutique brands have builds in this exact range as do the specialized and treks of the world (see: s-works and race room stuff). Also putting down any boutique brand that doesn’t sell DTC by comparing it to a DTC brand is like comparing apples and bowling balls, it’s a totally different business approach even if they are ostensibly selling the same product. Now the value you place on either model is totally your decision of course.
  • 1 0
 @TheBearDen: so I see... Frown
  • 1 0
@metsrangers35: yeah because writing "If you don't like it it's because you're jealous or narrow minded" is very well taught.
  • 7 1
@TheBearDen: radness is most definitely a word... and its measured by speed × style ÷ steeze + square root of line choice × bike owned
  • 4 1
@metsrangers35: I am not a fan of DTC sales. Im old school, I like bike shops and what not.

As for price, Yeah it gets pretty annoying hearing people bitch about bike prices here... but thats what PB is for, Yelling out your opinion cause your ride buddies don't wanna hear it haha. I do some other hobbies that cost me just as much as biking has so I just don't complain about it So long as I am happy and doing what I love.
  • 1 2
@rockyj: Ill have to get back to you on if this math checks out lol
  • 4 3
@TheBearDen: Erm what? That was supposed to be an insult, how is Zommery Woke AF not fitting the bill here?
  • 2 5
@WAKIdesigns: oh I just hate the saying "Woke AF" and then my old man soul slipped out and told you to act your age not your shoe size... Sorry happens time to time still working on how to fix it
  • 4 3
@TheBearDen: no problem I just found it funny for someone to say they hate dentists since they save us from excruciating pain, even if they are not doing it for free. It’s like being angry at surgeons. Also “Woke AF” deserves a certain dose of compassion. This expression relates to the feeling/ mental state where human being blows from one of their first social bubbles. It is often about the discovery/ becoming conscious of collective consciousness/ subconsciousness and being capable of being separate from it. It may also represent discovery/ awareness of the shadow or anima/animus part of our psyche. Reaching Each step releases enormous amounts of energy.

Monday for the Yeti, Tuesday for the roundtable, a few fun ones over the holiday (huck to flat, impossible climb), value bikes early in the new year, and eventually a behind-the-scenes once @jasonlucas edits out all the times I looked stupid. Smile
  • 4 0
@brianpark: well thats gonna be a short video....mic dropSmile
  • 2 1
@cueTIP: Ditto. I have a Yeti SB66, and I recently demo'd one of their top of the line $8000+ bikes. I was honestly underwhelmed compared to my old SB66. Definitely not a remarkable improvement to justify the MSRP, but apparently no one I talk to pays full price for a Yeti... so I guess make friends with your Colorado LBS?

They're fast bikes no doubt, but I don't live in CO, and I ride technical trails, where that long wheelbase is a penalty. I don't think I'd buy another Yeti at this point, but open to having my mind changed, and no way MSRP is worth it. There are comparable bikes at far less cost, a friend just dumped his Yeti for a Pivot, and he loves it more.
  • 15 1
Reading through the comments, a couple thoughts:

1. No brand triggers the Pinkbike dude-bro comment section more than Yeti, unless it’s Specialized. “Brah, they are soooo corporate. Also, they sue.”

2. Dentists not only save us from excruciating pain, but also early death. One of the biggest medical development that have lengthened our lifespan over the last century is modern dentistry. No need for hate.

3. If you’ve ridden a Yeti and decided it’s not what you’re looking for, cool. If you just don’t like the price, you’re likely just hating because you can’t afford one.

4. Why isn’t it ever called a lawyer’s bike? They make good money, too, and can buy a Yeti? Is it because lawyers are more likely to play golf? If so, that makes dentists way cooler than lawyers. Let’s cut them some slack.

@joshroppo: Sorry I’m not even on either side of this slightly silly debate but we have to have some facts here. The XX1 firebird is 9400, the sb150 xx1 is 8600. And that’s not even the highest firebird they have an axs that is over 10k. unless I’m missing something on their website yeti doesn’t even currently sell a 9k bike let alone a 10k bike like pivot.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, you are not entitled to your own facts.
  • 4 0
@metsrangers35: To add to this, Pivot sells the Firebird team frame for $440. Yeti sells their 150 frame for $3800. Even it xx1 cranks, you come out about $100 ahead with the Yeti. Not that I care either way, but let’s stop pretending Yeti is uniquely expensive.
  • 1 0
@metsrangers35: My friend was not riding one of their higher end bikes, but fair point Yeti and Pivot are both top shelf bike companies.

My point was that Yeti is not the only company which produces a good mountain bike. Albeit conflated with my first point of Yeti's ROI for bike being hard to stomach. Best way to ride better is to be a better rider, bike comes secondary, so I'd put the money saved towards time riding.

Compared to Pinkbike's bike of the year Norco Optic, as @TheR points out, for the price of a Pivot/Yeti Frame, you get a full bike...
  • 3 0
@joshroppo: you are right about the ROI, I got second hand sb6c on carbon wheels, hope hubs, praxis cranks, Saint, xt, fox for less than 3000 usd
  • 2 0
@TheR: I suppose part of it may come down to frustration, insofar as they are presented as desirable bikes that people want, but the starting price is out of reach (or beyond justification) for many.

Of course some people may just complain because they like to.

As far as i'm concerned... as long as there are brands out there still selling excellent bikes at affordable prices (YT et al), then it doesn't really matter to me if other brands are parading wildly unaffordable (for most) bikes.
  • 1 0
@DidNotSendIt: Yep. If I can’t afford a BMW, there are comparable-performing Toyotas. Not mad about BMWs or anyone who drives one.

The Specialized derangement is what I can’t understand. They have S works, and the more affordable aluminum. Take your pick.
  • 1 0
 @TheR: Not with the enduro
  • 1 0
@zyoungson: But even the Enduro they have one for $4500. That’s about as inexpensive as you’re going to find a carbon bike. Hell, as I pointed out, a frame and crankset alone from Pivot is $4400.
  • 3 0
@TheR: I have no feelings either way regarding specialized. Actually, the bike i started riding trails on was a years old, basic AF Hardrock Comp (Pro Tip: This bike does not go well at the bike park. I still have flashbacks)

Anyway, i just thought i'd share part of a conversation i overheard whilst out riding a while back...

"...i'd rather see my sister in a wh0re house than my brother on a Specialized"

Again, i have no feelings towards them either way. But that was funny.
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: Back in the ‘80’s the last page of BMX Action was titled Radness unlimited! It consisted blurry b&w photos of dudes doing bunny hops etc. So must be a word
  • 2 3
@TheR: Most people do not threaten to kill a dentist in open court....so, safer to blame dentists for all that ails us (plus not so apt to get orders of protection and what not)...there really is not many things lower than a lawyer (well, maybe a Dem in the Senate)......
  • 1 0
@TheR: Nobody wants a top end carbon frame with awful components

Fascinating there's no Giant - the biggest mtb manufacturer and not just brand like some bikes here.
There are lots of obscure brands almost no-one buys however.
Why is Giant not cool whereas Trek, Specialized or Scott are? You get great engineered bikes with top notch suspension and great warranty for much less than these other brands not to mention inferior bikes that cost twice as much (Yeti. Pivot, SC, IBIS etc).
