Quiz: Can You Guess These Bikes From Their Silhouettes?

Nov 16, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

Do all modern bikes look like a Session? If that's what you believe then you may have a difficult time with this quiz. We stripped off all branding, colours and decals from these bikes and left you just one way to identify them - the shape of their frames. Some of them are very distinctive whereas others you'll have to look beyond the Horst link and try and find some other details to separate them. We've picked 20 bikes from the current day and then 10 wildcards from the past 25 years for those that want some extra nerd kudos. Let us know how you got on in the poll at the bottom.

Don't let bike silhouettes distract you from the fact that there hasn't been a new Field Test video.
  • 38 7
Or an announced winner for the ride 30 challenge.
  • 39 1
Maybe they're sorting out this Pole nonsense before revealing more?
  • 138 8
what's funny is that you keep coming back - checking and checking again. they cast out the line, hooked you and are slowly reeling it in. they could milk it for weeks and you guys will continue to bring traffic to the site and complain. i find this particularly funny because cyclists & mountain bikers seem to think that collectively that they are this savvy group that can see through the smoke and mirrors - yet here you are falling for a most basic tactic like a simpleton, waiting for that new TMZ video that shows the electric toothbrush stuck in kim kardashian's butt. kudos to pinkbike for drawing this out - i would do it for at least another 2 weeks if i were them.
  • 12 1
 @rocky-mtn-gman: LOL nailed it
  • 27 4
@rocky-mtn-gman: and yet here you are.
  • 84 0
@rocky-mtn-gman: I think alot of us are on here daily regardless of the content.
  • 18 1
@gnarnaimo: Absolutely, the Field Test and in-depth bike reviews are obviously some of my favorite content but nevertheless I'd still be on here checking out what's new in the industry and watching great riding edits. I get much more enjoyment doing this than being on Facebook reading a bunch of crazy political opinions and rants or seeing what my 2nd cousin or some random person I knew in high school ate for breakfast.
  • 24 0
 @gnarnaimo: Surely you mean hourly?
  • 19 0
@Dropthedebt: Daily check for content, hourly check for comments
  • 19 4
We generally try to do 1 video per weekday, and we didn't want to overlap our videos for Thursday/Friday. The next Field Test is scheduled for Monday. Smile

@rocky-mtn-gman: thank god you're so enlightened and helpful to share your precious publishing 101 wisdom with us.

If you find satisfaction in confirming your own made up assumptions than you're surely a member of this savvy group.
  • 12 0
Oh I get it they are all mountain bikes.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: so a video on Monday but you didn't say which bike ????????
  • 28 0
@rocky-mtn-gman: u big tease- there is no toothbrush vid on TMZ.

Pole should name themselves polebike. since pinkbike love them so much.
  • 12 0
@rocky-mtn-gman: Where can I find that toothbrush video please?
  • 2 0
@CircusMaximus: exactly what I was thinking...
  • 1 0
 Yep, the truth awaits...
  • 1 0
 @slimboyjim: you know it
  • 8 0
@rocky-mtn-gman: I’m just here for the electric toothbrushes stuck in Kim Kardashian’s butt.
  • 8 1
session, session, session, not session, session etc.
  • 2 0
Field test comments are an inside job #savvycyclist

Also where can I find said video?
  • 2 1
If this delay is Pole's fault they will loose even more business!
  • 3 1
@terr0r86 They all look like Sessions to me
  • 1 0
@gnarnaimo: Bold of them to assume that I only procrastinate and dick off when a field test is coming out.
  • 117 1
One of them looks like the Pole but the rear triangle is attached?
  • 24 2
 Huck to snap test
  • 6 1
 Crack and fail
  • 5 2
 @DARKSTAR63 Its a prototype, pre-test.
  • 5 0
This whole Pole issue would be funny if it only affected industry guys like reviewers.

I'm a simple dude, sponsored by myself. My Evolink 158 developed a huge crack in the rear triangle, and the latest response from them was 2 weeks ago, like "oh, looks like lack of proper heat treatment, send us your shipping address". Silence since then.

Don't know how frustrated I would be if this situation and slow paced communication took place in the middle of the biking season.
  • 2 0
@ORAORA: Thats interesting. I never heard an Evolink fail before, they're pretty bombproof and there's a lot of them out there. Machines had their fair share of problems cause they had to figure out a whole new production method, and Stamina 140 is not even in production yet...
  • 3 0
Never heard of a cacked pole until this week. This week would have me believe that every pole owner cracked at least two frames.. Idk seems weird.
  • 1 0
 Oh snap!
  • 1 0
I just realized what I think Pole's look like, with the super steep seat angle and slack head angle. They look like abused pick up trucks that junk men drive. Their frames are so rusted that they have buckled in the middle. Pole's look like a normal bike that buckled in the middle.
  • 47 1
 Aren’t they all Sessions?
  • 39 0
I need to find other interests
  • 1 0
Yup... only missed the Cube, Lapierre, and some classics... me: Sweet! Scroll down... PB classification: Neeeeerrrrrrddd. Redface lol

I'm proud to say I was 100 percent accurate in the classic bike section, makes me feel old but also lucky to have been passionate about this sport for as long as I have been. I love you mountain biking!

@bikenation: Boomer isn't an age, it's a mindset. Don't let your age stop you from being a boomer! If you hate your wife enough and complain about kids these days, you can become a fully fledged boomer.

Would be more interesting if putting all the "looks like a Session" bikes together and do the silhouettes guess.
  • 1 0
 This!
  • 3 0
Or just different years of sessions and see if we can tell the 2012 from the 2019 model.
  • 1 0
coincidentally none of the modern bikes were actually a session. a bit disappointed to be honest.
  • 18 0
How did we survive the klein era?
  • 2 0
By not riding one... never seen one in person but that Slingshot looks like it wants to do exactly that to whoever's riding it as well
  • 6 0
 A lot of drugs.
  • 8 0
@konarider112 The Klein era was golden my friend, maybe not so much their full sus rigs, but then hardly anyone did it well to begin with. Klein's hardtails with those colour shift paint jobs were the stuff of dreams though.
  • 18 0
EVIL can't even get a silhouette on Pinkbike.

  • 15 0
@opignonlibre: someone ban this guy ASAP
  • 1 0
@lognar: To my defense I am more into trail bikes than DH and ride mostly out of bike parks so my only encounters with DH bikes are watching world cups on RedbullTV.
  • 1 0
@opignonlibre: you should try it sometime they're a hoot
  • 1 0
@opignonlibre: youre in luck. all of trek's other mtn bikes look like a session. this is by design of course
  • 7 0
That Pole silhouette looks like when I try to draw a bike. And that Jekyl looks like when my dog pukes.
  • 1 0
also forgot how ugly that SC V10 looks. i guess at the time we all thought this was what the future holds
  • 3 0
Showing my age, but out of my 18 correct answers 8 were from the Classics - all but the last two, straight off the bat, no hesitation! Big Grin Had the Kona pegged as an Ellsworth... Frown In my defence though, I wouldn't call 2010+ a classic! Now the Kona Stab Deelux '99 with the S-bend downtube and Monster T on the front - THAT's a classic! Big Grin
  • 3 0
That Slingshot is special never saw one on the trail (yes I am that old) but saw one with a broken cable, probably didn't ride any worse though, they had a rubber hinge at the seat tube top tube joint the hot mod of the day was to put stiffer rubber.:-)
Oh and there is a spring around the cable at the head tube to take stress off the cable when landing those huge jumps.
Now you youngsters wonder why us old farts ride like we do after growing up with these beauties.
Oh and the Klein don't get me started.
  • 5 0
Those last bikes remember me when I was in high school checking almost every bike brand website.
  • 2 0
I definitely lusted after that Cove back in the day
  • 9 1
There were websites for those bikes back in the days..? Hmmmmm...
  • 3 0
@rollbretzel: I think there's only two bikes from the 90's on this list so I don't see why not. I honestly don't know if Klein had a website in 96' but the internet was sure around back then so it's possible and I'd say it's more than possible that the rest of the bikes from the 2000's on did have a site.
  • 4 0
Ugh, that shocker just looks like it would be absolutely frightening to ride.
  • 5 0
This the wrong kind a field test
  • 1 1
Where is the silhouette from the cracked test bikes.....only reason I did the whole list. Next year can you make it where I need to draw a line from the name to the bike like in elementary school! If you get it right you get all right you send me a PB sticker. I suck at this but for the experts would be great to put a few of the same bike at different fit outs...can you spot the difference between the xtr rear mech on the carbon1 vs the NX rear mech on the carbon3....that would be next level.
  • 2 0
I could tell that it was the S-Works Enduro (nr9), because of the AXS Battery behind the saddle. Does this count allready?

  • 4 0
 That Marin hurts my vision.
  • 4 1
Oranges didn't changer much, right? And the ugliest silhouette goes to...Marin!
  • 1 0
I got a surprising number right. It may be my age, at 43, I'm Peaty' generation. Your algorithm' will tell you I clicked no answers. But I could identify most of the from the Peeler to the Pole. Great fun though.

I knew it was the Hope bike, but couldn't remember what the model name was, so half points for me for that one I guess
  • 2 1
@Dropthedebt: well I wasn’t spending 10 minutes per bike because it’s a Pinkbike game, who cares
  • 2 0
Quite good to see all in black. Makes it easier to compare different styling on all bikes, regardless the manufacturer.
  • 4 0
 No ironhorse Sunday?
  • 2 0
Hi photoshop gurus can some show me what my bike looks like if I paint the whole thing black?

One thing is sure, im spending too much time on pinkbike...
  • 1 2
I was gonna opt fot 16 to 20, but then realized that there is no Zerode in all thirty silhouette. So I chose 11 to 15, at least I can differentiate between a pole and a pivot. I also know that pivoting on a pole is sexy.
