We've been having a lot of fun with @charliewentoutside's AI-generated comments over on Twitter but now we want to put it to the test. Is his bot capable of passing the Turing Test and fooling people into believing it's real? Below are 25 comments and some of them are real and some are AI-generated. All you have to do is guess which is which. It sounds easy but remember, this is the PB community we're talking about and they're an unpredictable bunch at the best of times. Let us know how you did at the bottom of the page.

1.

bigquotesI was just referring to it being a difference in the amount of energy your body exerts. It is like saying a person is stronger with beer when he/she is in a bar. A guy who can make a difference in the gym or is stronger with a beer or three.

bigquotesWhat if someone put pineapple on a pizza. Then put it in the pizza box that was attached to an e-bike. With 29er wheels. WIth the wrong drive train and brake manufacturer instead of the other one.

For the record, I love ham and pineapple pizza. And I won't apologise to a single person. Or multiple people for that matter.

In 2016, Microsoft released an AI chatbot that learned about how humans speak by reading the internet. It immediately began spewing racist and hate-filled terms, and Microsoft quickly shut it down.

And not a single AI generated comment is about downhill tandem racing or enduro tandem racing....no tandem biking at all. Not only does pinkbike have a bias against them (mostly likely due to big single seat lobby money) but that bias was hard coded into the soft code of the AI comment generator.
  • 63 0
 DualSeatAddict, is that you???
  • 20 0
Right? If everyone rides tandems they sell half as many bikes.

Do they want that? Of course they don’t want that. They want n+1 not n/2. Twice the bikes, twice the profit, half the fun. Those bastards.

it is clear that our job has already been taken by the machines
  • 2 0
I wonder how far back the data input for the bot went. Because early/mid-2000s Pinkbike was a very different (more profane but hilarious) place.
  • 6 0
@SangamonTaylor: It was only 2018-2020 comments. I didn't want to destroy PB's servers by requesting any more than that! (But I did filter them with some sentiment analysis so the bot is trained on the more "high emotion" ones, for whatever that's worth. It does come up with a fair amount of profanity).

Are these comments AI-generated then selected by an editor, or a random selection of all of the comments? Asking for a friend who wasn't that good at the test
  • 11 0
AI generated, then CharlieWentOutside chooses the best ones to post on Twitter. And the real ones I think James just chose some believably absurd real comments to make the quiz a little tougher.

Scrolled through comments to see if someone already said this. Seriously, I was hoping for an “AI or Real” radio-button option with poll results and the answer for each, then an actual data-based summary of our collective ability to figure out real comments at the end. Seems silly to have a self-reported poll on a topic about AI bots.
  • 10 2
The AI comments are marked some some odd syntax. If you read them aloud (and English is your native language), you can listen to what makes them AI. It's hard to explain. I guess the best way to put it is that it's like when you get an item shipped from China, with original directions written in Chinese, and then run them through Google translate without a native English speaker checking them. That's the vibe I get from those comments.
  • 32 0
I read this comment to my friend and she is so happy to know about this because she has been looking for something like this for a really long time. Now she won't have to miss out any longer. She works full time and this means a lot to her! All my friends are now knowing about this.
  • 8 0
 @VtVolk: f*cking killed it.
  • 4 0
You're right of course, but tbf I got that vibe from some of the human comments too
  • 4 2
@bkm303: the best are the comments from people with American flags next to their name who go on super right wing political tirades (on a bike forum mind you) and misspell almost every word while talking about how foreigners are ruining our country and can’t speak our language.
  • 2 0
Yes, native english speakers should have scored well. If not, I assume english class was not your best.
  • 1 0
When I had a bike shop 30 years ago we'd read the original translation to English and Lol. That's some funny sh%t.
  • 1 0
As was stated above, it used to be easier to spot that syntax, unfortunately for society, most people are so illiterate, the chingrish/AI speak reads very similar to a majority of written posts.
  • 9 1
Each one is legitimately something Waki could have said either before or after a beer.
  • 7 0
Before to make a glasses on helmet, having downhill and Leogang video are better for XC -signed, definitely not AI
  • 5 1
I stopped after the second comment b/c it's nearly impossible to evaluate these out of context. My hypothesis is that in context of a conversation and with a large enough sample size, many humans could detect a bot, even if unconsciously. BTW, I'm a bot I think.
  • 4 0
So I found all the AI comments but I few of the real ones I thought were AI. The bot basically just says senseless bs that uses a few key phrases. Kinda says something about some of the commenters here.
  • 6 0
The flat earth commenter from a few days ago was AI as well then right?... right????
  • 1 0
Lack of intelligence, over abundance of time.

  • 1 0
@justincs: "bettered" or just wasted time with other, fellow idiots?
  • 2 0
Next time I see a master troll here, I will lead with "How do you do, fellow Idiot?"
  • 1 0
@suspended-flesh: its 2021, if you are still arguing with flat earthers there is no point in greeting anyone.
  • 2 0
Please don’t make this an additional authentication challenge response at login so we are forced to teach ai to be more human.

Oh wait, we don’t really understand what it is to be human anyhow. Carry on
  • 1 0
I'm not impressed, I doesn't think it was that hard. The only thing that made it challenging was reading short simple comments out of context. But most of them are obvious. And can we start referring to it as AI after it passes the touring test?
  • 4 0
Are any of these responses AI generated???
