Quiz: Do You Recognize These Legends of the Sport?

Nov 27, 2021
by Ed Spratt
How well do you know some of the legendary riders from the early years of MTB? We have put together a collection of some of the top 90s and early 2000s riders, can you match the correct name to the rider?

Thanks to PB user @Joebohobo for the new quiz format suggestion.

First contest that’s worth doing for a over 45 year old guy
  • 30 2
Yep, recognized everybody except the free riders. Too new school for me.

@nikifor88: Youngest Boomers were born in 1964 which would make them over 55. Not only are you a snarky little baby you’re an inaccurate one. Okay still live with Mommy.
  • 21 3
@nikifor88: Um...the youngest boomers are 57 years old. So yeah, good attempt at a catchphrase...I guess.

@fjm35: I only got 100% on the freeriders lol.

You don't need to be that old. I',m 34 and I recognized everyone outside of John Cowan (despite interviewing him when I worked as a journalist. Just didn't remember that photo and it was hard to see)
  • 1 0
 @fjm35: Haha!! Same here!
  • 2 0
Is 57 not over 55 when rounding? @gnarnaimo:

I had the poster of that Peaty photo on my bedroom wall something like 25years ago. Thanks for the crushing reminder of what I've not done with my life since then...

What is going on on that picture? One handed scrub while posing for the camera? Not sure I’m getting it but crazy stuff!

@t1000: @Man, 1996 was a mad time, you had to be there

That Kovarik look and bike is still unsurpassed as the epitome of cool in DH.
  • 1 0
Fond memories of him thrashing that Mount Snow course. Damn that was a hell of an era.
  • 20 0
You shoulda put Tinker Juárez in there so we could see if Cannondale would give him his sponsorship back.
  • 3 0
Some of those pics are so old they might have had him on his Klein.
  • 1 0
 Briliant! Hahahahahah Smile

Can we take a moment to recognize the COMMENCAL that Anne Caro Chausson is riding?! As far as I know that bike is a V Process That Nico Had Max Commencal make him but I'd never seen ACC on one, and especially with the Commencal name on the side. Oh yeah, and the high pivot-with -Idler suspension system!

The next image down in Nico himself on another generation V Process. Nico founded this company after Sunn bikes went down in flames but he never sold any....Max made the Sunn bikes for Nico and ACC along with countless other French legends..

 "Commencal aka Nicolas Vouilloz VProcess"

www.pinkbike.com/photo/12804590

They are the same frame as the Vprocess:

Any idea why Nico went on his own program instead of moving to Commencal? I guess Commencal at that time probably didn't have enough resources to put together a full DH program (ACG moved there later in 2002-03 after leaving Volvo-Cannondale) and then Nico retired for good, so not much chance for him to be in the Commencal team. But never realised the VProcess was made by Max, I always figured there was some kind of involvement but those images of both being the same bike are quite of a shocker!

Missy Giove threw me off since it wasn’t an early 90s pic.
  • 7 0
 No dried piranha necklace
  • 4 0
I think the iconic Missy is early Volvo Cannondale, which is 94-95 as you say. Whereas somehow the iconic Miles Rockwell is at Mammoth as shown here, and not necessarily on Volvo Cannondale though he was a founding member of that team.

I'm 34 years but had a subscription to MTBACTION from 2001 to 2004. Only one I didn't reconize were Jake Watson, Juli Furtado and Marla Streb, also misjudge Tomac for Myles Rockwell due to the Giant in front of him.
  • 1 0
An INTENSE M1 with Giant decals on it for the Tomac photo.
  • 3 1
Cedric Gracia did not made it into the 20 years recap of Rampage, there is also the Vagina in Virgin (Utah):

No Herbold? No Lopes? No Minnaar? No Tinker?
  • 4 1
Some unforgiveable misses for certain. No Overend either, No Sydor.
  • 16 0
@cerealkilla: gotta leave some gas in the tank to do another round at some point.
  • 13 0
 Tinker’s gonna be pissed
  • 1 0
Minnaar is not in this selection as the GOAT is still a racing legend.
  • 1 0
@cerealkilla: yes, true on those....both ruled, but XC only
  • 1 0
Minnaar is less "legendary rider from the early years of MTB" and more "current reigning DH World Champion".

Well, guess he's both....and that's why we call him the GOAT
  • 1 0
Nathan Rennie Sick Mick Katrina Miller Leigh Donovan So many great riders in that time.
  • 2 0
No Cully either. First US DH world champ
  • 1 0
Ya, Tinker and Ned were some top tier misses from back in the day. Rishi Grewal for some GT props too.
  • 2 0
3/12, I'll take that.. Did not get Rob Warner! Kicked myself on a couple once I saw the answers. A bit like Trivial Pursuit, you read out the question, then can't help saying outloud (after reading the answer) "oh, this is soooo easy"
  • 4 0
Wade on the RMX that was my favorite mtb of all time. Still have my black 04.
  • 1 0
Man this quiz makes me feel my age! Got most of those. Some iconic bikes/brands that will forever be linked with their riders. The Dave Watson road gap. And of course when it comes to vintage Intenses being ragged sideways in flat corners... there can be only one!

PS Kovarik's front wheel and fork looks to be in a world of hurt in that pic!
  • 2 0
Kabush should be there for Canada....its Pinkbike after all. Tinker should be there. Kinda found Furtado attractive once with GT, so I didnt recognize the early photo.
  • 1 0
 and what about Lopes??
  • 1 0
@velotech: Still looking for his spot in the car park...
  • 1 0
Great feature, but you could clearly see Warner and Gracia's faces.
And can't your developers knock up a quiz widget to make these more interactive, possibly with multi-choice answers?

I actually remember these pictures from when I used to buy magazines... Should have got a pic of Missy on a Cannondale; it was more of an iconic look for her
