Race Day in Les Carroz - French Downhill Championships 2017

Race day here in Les Carroz was bonkers. I said it yesterday, and I’ll say it again today, why can’t we have World Cups in places like this. It was all thrills and spills for the French National Championships. The race was streamed live on Eurosport, the camera crew had 18 cameras on track, and the cameras covered the most exciting sections as well. The track is tough, rooty, rocky, slippery, dusty, fast, technical. It was a true test of bike skills in Les Carroz.

The weather teased us as the top 10 guys were about to head down the track. Dark clouds piled in, a few drops here and there, but thankully the worst held off.

Loic Bruni took the win by almost five seconds, a mean feat by any stretch of the imagination. Amaury Pierron took second place and Loris Vergier just a fraction behind. Myriam Nicole took the win by over 12 seconds in the women's race, with Marine Cabirou in second position, and Agnes Delest in third.

Says This: "Race day here in Les Carroz was bonkers. I said it yesterday, and I’ll say it again today, why can’t we have World Cups in places like this."

..... includes picture of racer with a single crown fork.

He must be a mad dog!

I would love to know the story behind that guy. How did he place?

Maybe the dude on the single crown rips and only has one bike and still wants to race his country's national race? There's a thought. I think this track looks way better than most of the World Cup venues. After following the World Cup for close to ten years it's boring to see the same stuff over and over.

Dont understand why this is a big deal. How does this take away from the course/venue at all? Looks like a good track to me

Simply the resort does not have money to pay UCI for their event. In many cases, the resorts rather spend money on developing the area instead of throwing it into one event that in many cases does not bring any exposure at all.

@acetasting1992: same here, I raced the Irish National Champs last weekend on my enduro bike and finished 5th in junior, 7 seconds off the win. And i would say the majority off people at the race were on enduro bikes! ENDUROOOO

Channelling his inner Jared Graves maybe. Respect to him though.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but French races used to have a 'Stock' class. This was for riders without full DH bikes and up to 160mm travel with single crowns, also riders under 16/18 (?) weren't allowed to race on full DH bikes, the idea to make it fairer, more accessible and to develop riders skills instead of plopping them on to a full on DH bike at age 12.

At Italian DH champs in Bormio there was a lot singlecrowns

Also some pro's from ews

After the elite.. a lot of "amateurs" simply race for fun

Wow! That looks like a rad venue and race. Wish I could have caught it online today! Congrats to Loic!!!

Looks awesome. Mega coverage and crowds! And a deep field which guarantees great racing. Did Payet get any splits before his crash? Will the coverage go on the net?
  • 3 0
Payet was 2s back already before his crash, Loic really was on fire !

Can't tell if that pic of Loris caught him completely off guard or if he's doing his best fashion model impression.

The pics and vids I've seen of that track make it look brilliant. Would be terrifying in the wet with all the roots tho.
