Golden: Osprey BC Enduro Series, Presented by Smith Optics - Race Recap

SMITH ENDURO | Golden

This round was Smith Optics sponsored race, they support the entire series, but choose one race on the East and one on the West that gets them stoked and we couldn't agree more.

What started out as an ambitious goal--to race the never before raced T4 Ridge--truly caught some people's attention. Unfortunately, the 5 days leading up to the race were plagued with torrential downpours. The original goal of sending riders down the T4 Ridge into LSD was culled, so instead we headed into the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort for a true 'DownDuro', minimal climbing, maximum competition.

*Race Directors Note
I really want to thank all the participants and the community of Golden for their patience and understanding. As an event organizer, your goal is always to maximum fun and create the best possible experience. However, as a fellow mountain biker and secretary of the club in Kamloops, I'm always conscious of the race's impact to the local trails. I understand that anytime you ride a trail, you've in one way or another left your mark on that trail. Trails are ephemeral and the inherent result from riding them is to expedite this. Ultimately, the decision we made was to cancel the original course and keep the entire race in the Kicking Horse Bike Park, where the results from the race can be better managed.

A massive thanks to Ryan and Emile at KHMR, they were so accommodating in our short notice switch over to the bike park and they extended a warm welcome to allow the event to still be a hit! David Gagnon from Higher Ground Sports was crucial in this, as his connections with the community helped ensure that we had a great course despite the weather!

Thanks to the Higher Ground crew for hosting round number three of the OSPREY BC Enduro Series (BCES) EAST, presented by Smith Optics at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Golden.

Let's Get to Racing!
The race was supposed to take place ion the T4 Ridge - that was the plan at least - and as such, full-face helmets were mandatory for all racers. But we had to run a *weather alternative* route to not cause undue damage to the sensitive trails. So the actual race course was:

1) Northern Lights
T1) Excalibur
2) Rockgarden > it's a ten > chute to view> home run> it's a ten> showdown
T2) Road
3) Upper krazy pants
T3) Road
4) Superberm

Thanks to Higher Ground Sports and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort for being so accommodating. Big thanks to Golden Cycling Club for their patience!

My kind of Enduro, 328m Climb, 1378m Down
  • 3 3
This is my kind of thinking too, therefore I sold all bike bikes and bought a stable of e-bikes, I have a Levo, an electric DH bike and an electric fat bike. I have been taking all of the KOMs in my area and will never again buy a regular "wimp" bike.

Normally when there is a tie for second place. There is no 3rd place finished? After all, that person was the 4th fastest.
  • 3 5
Mmmmm... I think you fail to grasp the concept of a tie.
  • 4 0
@Golden-G: No he's right. If two people are tied for second, either one could be second or third, and then the next person is 4th. But I suppose with semi-pro or amateur racing like this, they just bump everyone up a position. At the end of the day, it's all for fun Smile

@rmalexan: I get that its for fun. Its not a big deal I just thought it was odd. A good example would be if two people tied for 2nd at an olympics. No bronze medal would be awarded. The only time 4 people end up on the podium is when there is a tie for Bronze.

Don't know where your mind is at, but, I'm referring to that he's never upset when he's riding his bike downhill. Tough Crowd...
