Race Report & Video: Eastern States Cup Showdown - Plattekill Mountain, NY

by Eastern States Cup

The Maxxis Eastern States Cup returned to the Catskills for a Box Components Showdown featuring both Enduro and Downhill racing action at Plattekill Mountain this past weekend. Loved by most and feared by many, the trails at Platty are full of steep chutes littered with loose bits of shale to keep you on your toes. It's the Northeast's ultimate proving grounds, if you put it all together to win here you can win anywhere. This weekend the Maxxis ESC crew have put together five burly Enduro stages each a bit different from our last visit as well as brought back a modified version of the Junior Worlds Qualifier Downhill course. Vermonters Mazie Hayden and Steve Estabrook continued their domination in the Downhill race while Kayla Morin-Blanchette took the ladies win and Saben Rossi finally found the top step on the Enduro side of things.

Shale yeah! Like dinner plates under your tires, the good news is when you fall the rocks move with you.

There aren't many lodging options close so most choose to camp in the parking lot, which is why there's no better venue atmosphere than right here at Plattekill.

The sky opened up shortly after practice Saturday evening, luckily the mountain drains quite well so slick spots were minimized.

After the fog burned off Sunday morning we were in for perfect race day weather.

Enduro

Riders warmed up by pedaling to the top of the double chair for Stage 1 which was the longest of the day, Jason Memmelaar sends a drop toward the top, he would finish in fourth for the Pro Men with a stage win.

Flat Tire Defender Super Stage 1 winners, including fastest amateurs Michael Maldonado and Kristine Koch.

This steep chute midway down Stage 2 provided plenty of loose moments all weekend, Danny's Cycles racer Michael Maldonado handles it comfortably and slides into fourth place in the U20 men's class.

Berkshire Bike & Board rider Andy Parkman carries ample speed off the ski trail and into the woods on Stage 3, he would finish fourth in the 40-49 men's class.

Fox Transfer winners who clocked the fastest time on the lift/pedal combo transfer between Stages 3 and 4.

Canadian Ajay Nagy navigates a series of small drops at the bottom of Stage 4, he would finish in sixth place for his sixth top ten result of the season in the Pro men's class.

Hannah Harrington sees the light at the end of the tunnel as she hits the final steep section of Stage 5 on her way to a top five result for the Amateur Women.

Alex Rims Super Stage 5 winners Michael Maldonado and Kristine Koch.

Cybercycle and Trek rider Kayla Morin-Blanchette tamed the shale chutes to take her second Pro women's win of 2019 with a total race time of 21:04. "Plattekill is really insane! Steep and technical tracks, everything to put a smile on a face. Not the kind of trails we are used to riding in Quebec, so happy to take the win!"

Sarah Howerter finished just six seconds off the win to match her best performance this season so far.

Kim Quinlan notched a stage win on her way to take third place for the Pro Women.

Enduro Pro Women: 3rd - Kim Quinlan, 1st - Kayla Morin-Blanchette, 2nd - Sarah Howerter

Enduro racing at a venue this steep suit downhillers like Benjamin Després-Morin, third place for the speedy Canadian this weekend. He unfortunately slid out in his DH run and dislocated his shoulder but was able to pop it back in with the help of Adam Morse, who suffered the same injury just weeks earlier.

Speaking of Adam Morse, he's landed on the podium in every Maxxis ESC race he's entered this season and this weekend was no different, finishing in second place for the Pro Men.

After a multitude of podium results, everyone knew it was only a matter of time until Comp Edge rider Saben Rossi found the top step. He was finally able put it all together this weekend, winning four stages with a final race time of 15:17. "I just wanted to win one. I felt Saturday that it was possible. Sunday I was on one right from the start and capitalized in a few spots. For it all to come together at Plattekill, I was pumped."

Enduro Pro Men: 5th - Steve Estabrook, 3rd - Benjamin Despres-Morin, 1st - Saben Rossi, 2nd - Adam Morse, 4th - Jason Memmelaar

Downhill

Nelphison Dealmeida showing some style during practice on the first double on Da Bomb portion of the track.

Cutters Bike Shop rider Abby Ronca kept it smooth on race day to take her third win of the season in the Amateur women's class by an amazing 45 seconds.

Danny's Cycles rider Nelson Maldonado flew into second place in the 45+ men's class, he's rolling on up to Mont-Sainte-Anne for Masters World Champs on a brand new bike. Best of luck, Nelson!

Peter Borden sends it back onto the fire road on his way to a 6th place finish in the Amateur 16-29 class.

Fly Racing Speed Zone winners, including fastest amateurs Megan Darrow and Aaron Perry.

Danny's Cycles racer Ivanna Estrada brought home her third podium result of the season, finishing runner up in the Pro women's class.

Mazie Hayden, racing for Competitive Edge and Pivot, was able to keep her win streak alive with a final race time of 3:05. "I wasn't feeling on top of my game mentally or physically so I decided to keep it clean and to have fun, which paid off. As always, Plattekill was a challenge but at least I made it down on two wheels this time! I'm stoked to rest up and carry my momentum from the past couple ESC races into World Champs at MSA."

Downhill Pro Women: 1st - Mazie Hayden, 2nd - Ivanna Estrada

Isaac Allaire was able to secure third place this weekend, he hasn't finished off the podium all season but there's no doubt he's aiming for that top step with just two races left.

Another solid race weekend for Danny's Cycles' Steven Ceballos, P2 and just 1.78 seconds off the win.

Defiant Racing team member Steve Estabrook has been incredibly consistent all season, he was able to keep it rolling this weekend with a fifth place in Enduro followed up by a heater of a Downhill run to take the win with a 2:34. Steve will be representing for the East Coast at the Snowshoe World Cup in September. "It was one of those weekends where everything went my way, rode my best and clean through every stage of the Enduro and the DH race, and it was enough for some great results amongst some fast guys!"

Downhill Pro Men: 5th - James Frost, 3rd - Isaac Allaire, 1st - Steve Estabrook, 2nd - Steven Ceballos, 4th - George Ryan
