Race Report: The Revolution Enduro Round Two at Steamboat Springs was a 2 Day, Back Country Epic

Jul 24, 2019
by Mick Gilligan

Round two of Revolution Enduro, presented by Niner Bikes, made its way to Steamboat Springs in the northwest corner of Colorado for two days in the backcountry. Historically the Steamboat Springs race offered one day of backcountry racing and one day of lift service stages at the resort bike park. A gondola replacement project by Steamboat Resort created an opportunity to host a full on backcountry epic. For day one we ventured north of Steamboat Springs toward Steamboat Lake State Park and Hahns Peak. Day two was in the heart of Steamboat on Buffalo Pass featuring one of the best trails in the state.

Day one used the Nipple Peak trail system for the five-stage course over the 25-mile loop. These remote trails back up to California Park with classic high Alpine vistas. The day started with racers dropping into Stage 1, directly from Race HQ, that offered free camping and operations base for race-crew.

The weather forecast called for high temperatures that threatened a challenging day for racers to stay hydrated, but unexpected cloud cover, cooler temperatures with scattered rain treated the provided grippy courses and a welcome reprieve from the heat.

Stages 3 and 4 were the heart of the backcountry race day with a mix of rock and root technical sections. Stage 4 was the designated “Hold my Beer” stage with a prize going to the fastest time.

Day two moved closer to Steamboat Springs on the Buffalo Pass trail system for the final three stages. Staring with a bus transfer and pedal transfer to Stages 6 and 7, that took place on Grouse trail, challenging racers with technical granite features, waterfalls, and chutes. Stage 6 had several Pro, A, and B line options, and many racers acknowledging the stage as the most technical trail in Colorado.

Stage 8, on BTR, locked in the race overall win for the Niner Bikes, team riders Eli Smith and Sarah Smith for the Pro Men and Women categories. Congrats and smiles were shared at the end Day 2 with lunch and awards.

San Pellegrino spray for the groms.
