Rachel Atherton was involved in a head on collision with a pickup truck while out on a casual training road ride on January 18th. The current World Champion has had a few days to recover and figure out what happened, so here is a small video updating us on how the accident happened.
Heal up Rachel! - Video InsideOn January 18th Rachel Altherton was out enjoying the inaugural road bike ride on her fully carbon Cervelo road bike. Rachel recalls rounding a corner listening to some AC/DC, looking up and seeing the pickup truck coming towards her. After a quick stutter Rachel decided to swerve to the right, but the truck did the same movement. Rachel switched it up to the other side, and the truck followed quickly, and the last thing Rachel recalls is seeing the grill coming at her.
Rachel's legs took the brute of the force, forcing Rachel onto the hood, and into the windshield. She shattered the windshield on the truck, and was instantly in pain. Brother Gee recalls seeing his sister laying on the ground in front of this pickup truck, and recalls thinking to himself that he had lost his sister. After noticing she was still alive, and in a massive amount of pain, brothers Gee and Dan had to act quickly.
Rachel requested that her dislocated shoulder be put back into place as to not further injure her shoulders. Gee jokingly said he had "seen her in worse condition, but not by much". Rachel's biggest concern at the time of the video was being shot while she looked so horrible.
Rachel was shocked to see the damage that was done to her brand new Cervelo road bike. The front rim was wrecked, the steer tube was broken off the carbon fork, and still in the stem. Everything else was functional, however, Rachel doubts she will ride a road bike again for a long, long time (if ever).
Rachel has had surgery on both her shoulders prior to this, so extensive or long term damage is unknown. By the time you read this Rachel will be planning to have an MRI done, and hopes to get back on the steed asap.
latest Police report says she was on the wrong side of the road when truck hit her, her bad, no helmet either....
Bicyclist injured in accident
A 21-year-old woman was flown to an out-of-county trauma center after being hit by a pickup while riding her bicycle around noon Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. She was not wearing a helmet.
The woman, visiting from Britain, was biking northbound in the southbound lanes of Amesti Road just south of Browns Valley Road. She was riding with friends when she was hit, CHP officer A. Voorhees said.
"The exact cause of the crash is under investigation but basically she was on the wrong side of the road," Voorhees said. "She was with a group of riders and was the first to leave the closure at Amesti, came around the curve and drifted into the opposing lane."
The woman crashed into the windshield on the passenger side and suffered a dislocated shoulder as well as some cuts to her face, according to CalFire Capt. Tony Arnold.
The woman was conscious and breathing when medics responded.
"She just wasn't paying attention," Arnold said.
Traffic in the area was blocked for about 20 minutes, the CHP reported.
its shit how the police report makes out that shes this really bad irrisponsible person because she wasnt wearing a helmet and 'just wasnt paying attension'. =\
I don't see how in this case it was the cars fault. From everything that was said, and even from what she said, she wasn't paying attention, looked up, and there was the car. How is this the cars fault??
First off All the best to rachel. However I'm going to have to agree with duhzonic. I love the way Rache says that she will never ride a road bike again. If you wear a helmet, ride on the right side of the road and forget the earphones, road biking is an safe & exellent way to stay in shape during the offseason. Just as when driving, the rules of the road still apply when road biking. As much as I am a fan of Rachel, I find this story has made her look irresponsible. I still wish her luck with healing, and I'm thankfull that the accident wasn't fatal.
Ok, not wearing a helmet wasn't the smartest idea, but you do have to take into account that in the UK, you drive and cycle on a diff side of the road than a US, maybe thats why she was on the wrong side.. *senses neg props*
exactly, she was on the proper side of the road. Anyway hopefully shell be back on the bike soon as she is one of the best bike riders on the planet at the moment
True, but if I where in Britain I would take into acount that they drive on the oposite side. I'm sure she was well aware of that having seen videos of here driving in Whistler. Wow sorry being sort of an old grump! :lol
TBH when in France I have no problems driving on the right, takes 2 minutes to get used to it and vice-versa. However riding on the roads on the opposite side to normal is totally weird and hard to get used to, I can't explain it but it is. Maybe something to to with being at the extreme left/right of the road?
I consider myself a big fan of the Athertons but seriously... no helmet? This does make her look very irresponsible, and that sucks. It would have been much better for the incident to shed light on irresponsible drivers, not cyclists. Get well soon Rach
Why? Everyone knows there are irresponsible drivers out there. It's the duty of a cyclist to be aware of this and be careful on the road because cars kill!
I think bikers should be driving against the flow of traffic not with it!! At least if she had looked up she could have seen that the truck is going to hit here and then dodge it instead of just leaving it up to the dumb ass drivers. Some of them don't care about us at all and no one wants us to be biking anywhere the roads or the sidewalks. I always get looks from both party's. They need to have paths just for us or else everyone is going to be still be driving these gas wasting peaces of junk. At least went you drive facing the traffic you can see if the driver is going to hit you and then decide if you want to die, if you are facing with your back to the traffic you leave you life in there hands and personally I am so scared biking with the flow of traffic I have to check every car that goes by. I feel bad cus Rachel was not paying attention but she still would have gotten hit if she was on the other side of the road. But she wound not have seen it coming at all.
I was shocked to see there that it was her fault for not being on the correct side of the road but the helmet thing is worse and you see in their podcasts they don't wear them, but they wear helmets for everything else, should be no exception especially with some of the bad drivers out there =/
Nothing is said about truck driver !? I wouldn't hit rachel with Gee & Dan around !! have a good recovery rachel, get well soon ! Good luck all Atherton family, you Rock !!!
She hit him as much as he hit her. I'd love to side with Rachel, but by the sound of it (including her description) the driver was trying to get out of HER way. A lot of people are ragging on this driver (given, most drivers are a*sholes to cyclists)but I gotta say I'm super disappointed by Rachel's lack of a helmet more than anything. Shes a PRO athlete and a role model and she can't look out for her own brain? Oh, and the whole "They drive on the other side of the road in England" argument is stupid. They are not dumb and I think you'd figure out quick when cars are not coming up behind you.
i agree with the no helmet comment, but as for the "They drive on the other side of the road in England" argument, i can understand her doing that, one of my dad's freinds went to england and a couple minutes after he left the airport, he got on the road, looked the wrong way and bam! He spent his whole vacation in the hospital.
I know im gonna get slaughtered for this post but i just can't believe she wasn't wearing a helmet, She is a sponsored professional bike rider. She probably gets given helmets for free, and should be setting an example for other riders who look up to her.
Anyway rant over.
Get well soon rach
^ are you stupid? Helmets are pointless for road riding? I never leave my driveway without wearing a helmet. I road and mountain bike and have had spills on both bikes. Not wearing a helmet is asking for trouble. And they weren't making her look like the bad guy. They explained that the accident was her fault. She was looking down at the bars and drifted into oncoming traffic. I feel sorry for the driver of the truck who tried to avoid her. Obviously it sucks that a fellow cyclist is hurt but that's why you wear necessary protective gear and pay attention at all times. We all make mistakes and unfortunately hers got her injured. I hope she recovers quickly!!
I can't believe she's irresponsible enough to go out without a helmet, and it surprises me her sponsors even let her out the house without one on. Not just in consideration of her safety and protecting their 'asset' but also the missed advertising opportunity (look at Gee wearing an AnimalComical tshirt in the vid). She's had big stacks before in DH and been roughed up, she should know the importance of safety equipment, and to set an example to her throngs of fans.
It doesn't say how she was listening to her music, but the impression is she had both ears plugged with some raging tunes, head down, which has further led to her demise. Not only has it prevented her hearing the traffic around her but possibly also the shouts from her brothers as to her lapse in navigation veering in to the incorrect lane. If you listen to music it's one ear only, and the curb-side one. Always.
I wish Rachel all the best, I'm a big fan of her racing, her achievements, and what she's doing for our country on the World Stage, as well as raising women's sports profile. However, she has to wise up. Riding on the road is a dangerous game, even if you have many years experience behind you. As a first-time novice, she should have known better herself, and should have been better advised by her team, and family.
Oh, yes I have had an altercation with a car with a similar outcome; a broken and dislocated left humerus. I was thrown several yards through the air and landed on my head and shoulder (similar to Rachel, only I hit the road as it was a side-swipe). The helmet saved my life.
Remember kids, stay in school and always wear a helmet when riding.
Seriously i agree with what your saying that she should have been wearing a helmet - i almost feel more need to wear one on the road than downhilling (i do wear one for both) but at least when in the woods there is trees and squidgy mud and grass - on the road it is concrete with huge lumps of metal travelling towards you rather fast! rather more scary and dangerous than downhill mush!
Above post was from Crudmunch NOT Chazdog - account confusion - signed in on wrong account! so if you think he was just contradicting himself he wasnt!
that is one tough chick...but...them popping her shoulder back in was dumb as hell...if she had fractured one of the vertebrae in her neck and they had started wrangling with her shoulder they could have paralyzed her. but it all worked out so cheers
Not so much that Road Bikes are the Devil as it is cars not being alert. I have to admit, Ive changed a cd before, sent a text message, or talked on the phone or done something stupid and swerved and just glad I didn't KO a road rider or hiker!!! I bit the road on a road bike in the middle of the street and almost got smoked by some looser who just waited for me to move out of his way didn't even ask if I was ok or help me... I retired from Road Riding that day! GET WELL SOON RACHEL!!
it says that she was listening to so AC/DC while riding? Riding a roadie and listening to an MP3 doesn't seem so smart if ya ask me. I know im gonna get slammed for this...but it sounds like she wasn't paying attention to the road as much as she could have been. I rode a roadie for 8 years and slammed over one hood....no MP3 stuck in my ears....just a blind hill. When youre riding the roadie on the pavement, you are on the bottom of the totem pole as far as vehicles in crashes go. youre always going to lose. Just makes sense to me that you would do all you could to minimize yer risk....we all know there's enough space cadets driving cas and trucks out there....throwing on an MP3 just seems to magnify yer risks....I hope she comes out of this ok and is able to ride hard again....she's lucky she's alive.
agreed, but i ride the rode a lot and theres been so many cases where drives have intentionally buzzed us. Most of the time they role down the window give us the finger and scream that we don't pay taxes, which doesn't make sense at all because 99.9% of the time we have cars (so yeah we do pay taxes). sorry just releasing some anger...
yeah i've had that it's pretty lame how people will pick on you just because you're on a bike. I'm never sure whether to shout abuse or not...mainly because car wins over bike most times...
WTF? I love RA like the next guy but what was she thinking? No helmet... the wrong side of the road? Get well but get a clue while you're at it. All you people that are going to flame me, you get a clue too!
Lots of judgemental people! In my opinion, we are all guilty, if not of riders, as driver's or otherwise of lapsing our concentration at times, especially when she is as comfortable riding as she is, think she has learnt her own lessons, discussion on blames not neccesary.
Get well soon to the hottest, fastest and a huge character on the circuit!

Aptos
very lucky to get away with dislocated shoulder and facial injuries
no for bikers u are supposed to ride with the flow of trafficits when u are walkingon the road that ur supposed to walk on the wrong side, i know i had a run in with the cops for going too fast down a walking path.....apperently i was goin 30 wen the limit for bikers was 20(no speedometer on my bike)......but i did learn form that cause i had stated that cars kept honking and yelling at me to get off the F*cking road.....and i knew that side walks were off limits, the cop said quote on quote"Cyclist's are to ride with the the flow of traffic, and it's up to the motorist to go around you." so yea any way get well soon!!!!!
I think bikers should be driving against the flow of traffic not with it!! At least if she had looked up she could have seen that the truck is going to hit here and then dodge it instead of just leaving it up to the dumb ass drivers. how does the make any logical sense????just because u are paranoid doesn't mean u have to go demanding the laws be changed!!!!!!so what is pplz ion cars yell at u bigg deal, one of these times they are gonna yell at a bicycle cop and get theirs asses i big fat ticket!!!!!!!!!!just use common sense, if its busy on the roads, WALK on the side walk...........I'm not about to go into the logistics of why your theory is absolutely retarded but you really need to think before you open your mouth, NO ONE CARES that u are paranoid and don't like riding on the road!!!!!if your so chicken shit to riding on the road why do u bike?????the chance of you getting run over by a car is about the same chance of you breaking you neck doing a no footer, if u stay off to the side and only use turn lanes when necessary u WONT be run over
Logical sense? Just because it is the law, doesn't make it automatically logical! It is ass-backwards if you ask me, putting your blind faith in someone else...no thanks. You ever break the rules, considering you won't even when asked to increase the risk to yourself?
small minded people have nothing else but the law to live by.. they are too incompetent to think for them selves..like NWray.. maybe he never was passed by a car who's driver is switching the radio channel whille litting a cigarette.. leaving 30cm of space between the parked cars and the him..looking up seeing the biker.. avoiding a crash by yanking the steering wheel almost killing pedestrians walking on the SIDE walk.. with the action taken... and you dont yell at bicycle cops.. unless you are a complete retard like U NWay
ok.....ur saying that ur blindly putting ur life in some one else's hands right????arnt u dont that any time u get in your car and go some where???hows about wen you going down the 401 wat happens wen a transport trucks brakes blow out and ur in its way?????????i would u dam near fked, sure he honks but by the time u take and look there is a transport truck using u/ur car as a grill ornament, moral of the story here is, risk management; wen ur out road biking..> dont listen to ur ipod in both ears, pay attention to where ur going, and lastly periodically look behind u like u do in your car, periodically u check ur mirrors,
dont have a car mate.. and we dont have a 401.. i rode motorcycle for 2 years.. and most car drivers are simply plain stupid.. what to do when our society lives on transport and even the biggest retards need to get somewhere ? right ..unless we make subways every where we are all in danger.. you should not road bike.. or do it on the race course and not the road ,, same as the cops send us away while riding street.. do it in a park.."were you supposed to) and to say honest riding fully on your music is nice but indeed not too smart.. but heey i do it too some times.. so a little understanding is here... U C ?
Yeah the whole "IPOD thing" I don't get. Must we always have music blasting in our ears. Who knows maybe if she wouldn't have had been listening to her IPOD she would have heard the car coming and might have looked up and been like, WTF, I about to get my butt run over, and moved over. I wonder if she was listening to "Highway to Hell"? Hmmm?
A lady in the city I live in, was out biking, with her IPOD and didn't hear A TRAIN BARRELING TOWARD HER with full on horns blasting!! What the hell was she listening to?? She crossed at a crossing and needless to say she didn't make it to the other side. I see college girls at the local college walking at night next to wooded areas listening to their IPOD. Any freak could sneak up behind them and drag them into the woods. Hey im in America, that shit happens ya know? Anyways people need to take their earphones out of their ears and join society, before they get run over, or killed by something or someone they could have noticed if they weren't listening to their IPOD. Oh ya AC/DC rocks lol.
when i first so this article i was like 'oh my god' and i was properly shocked, but I'm relieved to see shes okay
riding on roads is like suicide most times, in the occasions when i ride on them to get to trails and stuff, i shit myself every time a car goes by
get well soon
it nice to know tht your own brother is thinking the worsest when u get wit by a truck i bet she fels loved lol
faviroute rider of all time and i hope she recovers soon and love to she her back on th dh track
crazy red necks and there trucks lmao
Dont blame the IPOD i listen to mine everytime i go ride'n.I will stress one thing and that is u have to be aware of your surroundings at all times weather or not you have music in or not.But i clearly agree it was ALL HER FAULT.
I wish Rachel a swift recovery and I am a fan of anyone who rides a bike, especially with as much skill as the Atherton family.
That said, Rachel got what she asked for.
For your reference, don't barrel downhill around corners without a helmet on on the wrong side of the road with earbuds in blasting music. You might get hurt.
Maybe this will convince Rachel Giro deserves $100 of her winnings. She should never be seen without a brain bucket anyway because she is a role model for children, especially young women.
Oh My! that was a terrible accident! I can see her chin bone from her wound I am just glad he recovered to compete again. I handled a similar case in a a href="http://www.injury-settlement-guide.com/nevada-personal-injury-attorneys.html">nevada personal injury attorneys/a> office and the victim was awarded a huge sum of settlement.

I hope she is going to be okay.. Though i do find it weird how these pictures of her totally fubared are put up for everyone to see.. if i was her i wouldnt be happy.. not that i would be too concerned about it at the moment.
i must say you are mighty lucky, sadly the same thing happened to me except i was in a small race a week before canadian nationals tri race. I had just began the bike portion and a old man tried to squeeze through the course cutting me off and caused me to fly over the windsheild, somehow i was lucky and god was on i side. I suffered to blown knees but after 4 years i have quit riding because i just am not able to but ya take what you can get. so hope for you to get better soon
I'm telling you riding roadies is even more dangerous than riding DH or FR... I know too many guys getting into Accidents with cars.
Hope your wounds will heal fast Rachel...
Even though Rachel beat the crap out of a pickup truck she still looks great. Banged up a lot but in great spirits from the sounds of it. A trooper if you ask me!
I send you all my healing vibes Rachel and I look forwward to see you race when you get better.
Get well soon Rach.
I see the Helmet Brigade are at it again! It wouldnt have saved her shoulder.
Thing's Like this just happen. Could have been anybody but it's only important when it happens to a star.
Get well soon Rach!!!!
Once again here is a classic and stupid episode of how laws are backward.
When you're old enough you can drink...
When you're old enough you can drive...
When you're old enough you can vote...
And Finally,
When you're old enough you dont have to wear a helmet anymore...
That is a fucking dumb ass law... How does someone age make them any less vulnerable to serious injury!!!!
Those darn authorities. I strongly diagree with following the law on this on, infact, it has always torqued me! F riding on the right, "where it is legal" I ain't ever going to get ran over without seeing it coming first! At least she had time to swerve twice trying to avoid the collision, but her fault? Welcome to America...where those driving 2000 pounds of metal have no accountability.
I heard of this crash but just now read the whole story. get better rachel!!!! helmets are made with you in mind, not trying to nag you, but wear one.
Good luck on the recovery
Listening to AC/DC? That's part of the problem right there in my opinion. She probably would've heard the truck coming if she wasn't listening to music.
Yeah, I'm just trying to make light of the moment a bit. If she's alright then it's ok, and of course all the best in healing. That's what you get when you listen to Highway To Hell! Zep might be ok as long as in this situation it's not stairway to heaven! haha
The big man was looking after you Rache, People have died causing that much damage to 4x4 windscreens, lets hope it hasn't done long term damage to your shoulder, Get well soon sweets
Can anyone find a post above that absolves Rachel of all guilt that WASN'T written by a teenager?
Listen kiddies, life isn't one big XBox game of no consequences and bad spelling. One by one, you will find out that every person you love and every hero that you look up to is simply another human with failings.
i know how it feels- i got decked by a car while trying to cross a pedestrian crossing. albeit, i didnt wreck my bike or break the windshield, but the lady tried to make me a hood ornament. hope you have a speedy recovery
Scary...was she listen'n to Highway to hell??Glad to see U R alright, coulda been a hell of alot worse.Hurry an get your ass back on your ride Rachel we r all pull'n for ya.
even if she was wearing a helmet it wouldnt have stopped the dislocated shoulder!!
A helmet for DH and freeride definitely but honestly if you hit a car on the road a plastic crash helmet does F all.
But most importantly Rach is OK and will wear BIG shoulder pads next time!
...... what the f*ck are you on about. If she had landed on her head she would have died before the ambulance got to her. And if you think that helmets do f*ck all on the road, why bother wearing one through a rock garden when downhilling? After all, by your logic, it'll do f*ck all....
well i know from experience in racing, shifter karts and winged sprint cars that its ur automatic reaction that if u swerve the same way as a spinning car u swerve the other way, some times u fk up and hit the spinning car, same thing happend here......she was obv. in the zone and just riding according to habit, the fact she was listening to her ipod didn't help, if she wasn't listening to the music she would have known the truck was coming just by sound......i know im prob gonna get neg props for this but w/e
I made a point in the other post that the driver may possibly have been an experienced motorbike rider (his Ford badge was replaced with an Arai badge, which is a little weird, considering the circumstances), so he may have done the same thing.
I love biking. I love sports. I love life. Rachel girl to recover soon. We hope your ok downhill. God bless their drills and allow more wins in his career. I love you!
I don't usually pay attention to anything on the homepage but this really got my attention, I hope you make a good recovery and are back on the bike soon!
jaysin2010, dhsami is 15 years of age. He's never smashed his balls on his seat 'cause they haven't dropped that far yet.
I had a look at a few of the profiles of those that are writing such ignorant crap and they are all teenagers.
I'm originally from the UK, but I've never ridden on the wrong side since moving to the US 2 years ago. I also recently started riding road bikes (as a cross-season training aid) and when I do, I normally have an MP3 player on. It just makes me use my eyes a lot more; I'm checking over my shoulder more often too. Finally, to any a*shole who thinks that cyclists should ride AGAINST traffic? WTF? When I drive, I'm sick of trying to dodge the retards who ride against traffic, but 2' out from the curb! When you ride a bike you have the same rights as a car BUT YOU HAVE TO OBSERVE THE SAME RULES TOO AND THAT MEANS RIDING THE RIGHT DIRECTION! Too bad Rachel didn't have a helmet on - poor show for such an accomplished and high-profile rider.
spawny, your post makes no sense.
when you have the same rights as a car you HAVE to stay on the correct side of the road. Rachel was at fault here which means that on top of her hospital bills, she'll probably have to pay for the damage caused to the driver's truck...same as a car driver would have to.
yes it did say, she was listening to music, and not paying attention. she was in the trucks lain, remember shes a brit they drive on the other side of the road, she was obv riding according to havbit
I hope she get's well soon, but I otherwise think it is absolutely her fault. Downhiller like to think roadbiking is pussy-stuff and they don't need a helmet, but that's sadly not true. I'm downhiller but I sometimes go roadbiking, and had a few bad crashs, all with a helmet. And going on the wrong lane in america is just stupid. She shouldn't stop roadbiking for training, just wear a helmet next time. And go slower in a corner =) I hope we see her completely fit in the worldcup next year!!
Does the last article piss anyone else off!? reading the pinkbike article where the cyclists view is explained and telling how its lucky the best female dher in the world is ok was good, but the last is just trying to make the cyclists look like the bad guys (as always)! everyones saying to go green and sh*t but the press make it sound like she almost deserved it! mtb helmets are designed to absorb collisions in off-road riding and falls, not with bloody cars, so for on road riding they're fairly pointless, what next, she wasnt wearing body armour???! f*king sickening.
Actually a helmet in road conditions is a great idea. Just a little fall and a snap of the neck to bounce your head of concrete can cause big damage. A lid in those conditions would help a lot.
It's all just interesting stuff to think about the next time you ride. We all can decide to wear and not wear a lid.
get well soon.
Get well soon Rachel
Im sure you'll win again this year
2 top uk riders and almost taking down another
R.I.P Ben and Tom and get well soon rachel
man bad month so far first the two other guys (forget names) died in that car accedent and then this man that sucks
PS the date in the vid says April 18 2009...
have a good recovery rachel, get well soon !
Good luck all Atherton family, you Rock !!!

Traffic in the area was blocked for about 20 minutes, the CHP reported.

and you dont yell at bicycle cops.. unless you are a complete retard like U NWay
you should not road bike.. or do it on the race course and not the road ,, same as the cops send us away while riding street.. do it in a park.."were you supposed to) and to say honest riding fully on your music is nice but indeed not too smart.. but heey i do it too some times.. so a little understanding is here... U C ?
My 2 cents.
I am just glad he recovered to compete again. I handled a similar case in a a href="http://www.injury-settlement-guide.com/nevada-personal-injury-attorneys.html">nevada personal injury attorneys/a> office and the victim was awarded a huge sum of settlement.

Listen kiddies, life isn't one big XBox game of no consequences and bad spelling. One by one, you will find out that every person you love and every hero that you look up to is simply another human with failings.
You are so wrong. But if I had to explain it, you STILL wouldn't understand. Get to the back of the short-bus.
amen to that! good to see shes taken it well and can still pop out the jokes.
get well soon rach!
Road bikes = danger (usually 4x4 drivers)
But remember kids look up to role models
so wear a helmet
exactly, so thats why she hit the car. and the fact u never ridden on the wrong side doesn't mean anything to this situation.
Stay on the trails!
but I otherwise think it is absolutely her fault. And go slower in a corner =)
I hope we see her completely fit in the worldcup next year!!
get well soon rachel, and keep inspiring us all
And to smash you logically, helmets existed before mountain biking was invented.
