How time flies, I can't believe it was a whole year since the previously unstoppable Atherton won a World Cup. Now she is back at the top. In her absence from the top step, the Elite women have continued to push themselves in the pursuit of glory and have all raised their game, Atherton will be going all-out until the end of the season if shes wants her sixth overall title. We take a look at her custom, race winning, full-carbon Trek Session 9.9.

Myriam Nicole is currently leading the series after three rounds, but Rachel won't want to keep that No.2 plate for long.

 500lb spring. Woah.

You must be using a desktop computer

I run a 450 weighting in at 88 kg. She seems to push the envelope a bit more than me... Wink

Baby blue, purple and orange. Good thing she rides fast.
  • + 11
Lever ratio dictated. Doesn't mean she is heavy.
  • + 7
I am sure the springs may vary from track to track. Since this is a quite fast track it makes sense to use a harder spring rate.
  • + 9
Yeah the leverage ratio also dictates the effective spring rate, which is what matters. The Session has a fairly high leverage ratio (but not as high as the old Session!) so needs a firmer spring.

Also, Rachel rides fast.

So your saying she likes the big springs?
  • - 1
Considering that the Session uses a 2.75 stroke as opposed to a 3.0 like most DH bikes, I can see that spring being needed...

Weird seeing an Atherton bike with a SRAM rear mech.
  • + 10
These are probably the best specced bikes on the circuit...being an Atherton must rock.
  • + 5
Interesting when riders leave Shimano without a shifting "sponsor" they buy SRAM Wink Gwin did it*, and now the Athertons do too.

*I know he has something proto/weird on his bike now tho.

@ka-brap: Gwin never rode on sram stuff? Shimano then Box.
  • + 3
 @chillrider199: After Shimano, he didn't have a sponsor and purchased/ran Sram XO1-DH.

Every bike check since Shimano has him on Sram. Here's one from 2016:

@ka-brap: they do not buy sram over shimano... sram gives them the stuff for free (shimano wont) and very likely a chuck of money. sram can not officially sponsor them becuase both gwin and atherton run different cranks. underground sponsorship.
  • + 1
@RedRedRe: In the early stages, they definitely bought Sram- heard it from Juan Hall himself. What's it like now? Still unofficial, as you said. Could money be involved? No idea, I'm not a part of those meetings.

Those Hope V4 brakes are great. Paid painful money for them a couple of years ago but never regretted it. They are trouble free even in the worst UK grit and mud and consistent when you need them.
  • + 3
I tried loads of different brakes and since going the Hope way i will never go back
  • + 0
you must like brakes with sub pair feeling then.

I prefer the colour of this frame to Gee's one. Can I get this paint job when I win the League? Please.

What's the best way to find the stream without seeing spoilers? The redbull website and app are both horrible for that. They almost always have spoilers.

Best method so far... a friend (who doesn't bike) checked pinkbike for me and texted me the replay link.
  • + 5
Redbulltv has yet to spoil a replay for me so far? And I usually just avoid pinkbike/Facebook/Instagram/the entire internet until I have watched that replay!

She's using Fix hope disc instead the floating one. does someone know why ?
  • + 1
Good question. I've been thinking about buying floating rotors, but can't bring myself because my calipers float, and my rotors don't rub.
  • + 1
 Because floating are just bling?

I've just gone back from Hope floating to standard and not noticed any difference whatsoever part from leftover cash in my wallet. Also I heard/read somewhere that the larger the disc the cooler they run - effectively negating the need for floating rotors to dissipate heat, but that could just be surmising.

That looks amazing. Are the silver accents mimicking a damselfly?
  • - 1
My guess would be snake skin pattern, best camouflage pattern on the planet, outperforms even man-made ones. Various armies in SE-Asia adopted this pattern on uniforms a while back.
  • + 1
That's a good guess. I first thought 'muscles' then 'feathers' but some insect wing might look like that up close. Plus the iridescent sheen of the silver is bug-like. Its a nice effect. The close-up of the down tube area does look a little sloppier though, with the TREK letters wrinkling over the silver effects. Good from far, far from good, but completely adequate for race photos.

Butterfly wings is what they said at the last race

I'd like to know how those rims differ from the Line 30s for mere mortals. No way they're the same.
  • + 2
WOW, I just realize the Session is a single pivot frame!

Split Pivot by Dave Weagle ....here he is describing it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJeARx8pYLA

 Looks like a Session!

 Sram last week. This week???

 Hm! Looks like a ...

Does anyone know what front mudguard it is?

 Bike looks Good...

@brianpark: Some of us occasionally don't get the opportunity to watch the race right away. Losinj took me over a week to find a spare 3 hours to watch all Womens and Mens and I avoided PB for that entire time just in case. I appreciate the majority of the front page stuff doesn't elude to a result right away, but perhaps something like this could have been titled "Womens DH winners bike: Up close" or similar, with a fairly non-descript photo?
  • - 3
@brianpark: Did the piece need 'race winning' in the title? Rachel's bike for leogang is a very nice looking bike, regardless of whether she won on it or not.
  • + 13
 @3lfd3wd: come off it.
They didn't need to hold off at all - And either way why are you on pinkbikes if you're trying to not find out the results!?

Keep up the great articles PB!

One of the biggest, if not THE biggest, mountain bike websites is allowed to report the winners as quickly as they want. That’s kind of their job really

@brianpark: I agree that we could at least be a little more vague. I didn't watch the races because I was racing yesterday but was still planning on watching them today. Pink bike is usually pretty safe and I'm a little disappointed
  • + 8
Easy to avoid pinkbike till you watch. Easy to report results wo spoilers. I give this issue a solid meh.
  • + 1
@brianpark: people who can't watch it sundays usually would watch it the next day if possible... I used pinkbike in the past because it was spoiler-free for the last years and the replay was posted, while redbulls sites were the absolute spoiler zone... same for Luca's crash
