Rapha Announces New Line of Cycling Eyewear

Jul 3, 2020
by Sarah Moore

After a brief hiatus, Rapha is back in the eyewear game with four new styles: Pro Team Frameless, Pro Team Full Frame, Explore, and Classic. The four new frames are designed for four different types of riding and they now use what Rapha calls Rider Optimized Surface Enhancement (ROSE) lens technology.

Rapha says that the base color of the lens is engineered to enhance differences between areas of different light levels and enable you to spot hazards with ease. The technology also heightens contrast between light and dark and allows your eyes to adapt swiftly, such as when entering a wooded area or a tunnel.

Rapha says their glasses feature the following technologies:

CONTRAST ENHANCEMENT LENS TECHNOLOGY
By heightening the level of contrast between areas of light and dark, ROSE technology makes hazards in the road easier to see and avoid. The technology also helps your eyes adapt to rapid changes in light, for example when entering a tunnel, allowing you to ride with confidence.

MILITARY-GRADE ANTI-FOGGING
To prevent the build-up of moisture inside the lens from sweat or exhalation, all of our lenses have an antifogging treatment initially developed for military use. Even direct breathing on the lens fails to fog it,
meaning that you are guaranteed a clear view during the toughest efforts and in any weather conditions.

WATER-REPELLENT HYDROPHOBIC COATING
With moisture on the inside of the lens taken care of, only the outside can obscure your view. To mitigate the blurring effect of rain water and road spray, we have treated our lenses with a highly effective hydrophobic coating which causes moisture to bead and roll off the surface of the lens.

AIRFLOW & VENTILATION
With the exception of the Pro Team Frameless model, which provides excellent airflow without the need for vents, all of our lenses are complimented by strategically-placed vents. Working in conjunction, these vents prevent moisture build-up and fogging, and help to keep you cool in hot conditions.

PRO TEAM FRAMELESS GLASSES
bigquotesA lightweight pair of frameless sunglasses with high-contrast lens technology.

To perform at your best, you need an uncompromising view of the road ahead. The Pro Team Frameless Glasses feature a minimalist design with no frame around the lens to obscure your vision even when riding in an aggressive position. Made with high-strength, injection-molded Grilamid, the Pro Team Frameless weighs in at just 28 grams—all without compromise on fit or stability. Megol arm grippers provide a secure, yet comfortable grip in all conditions while the nosepiece — made with the same high-grip material — comes in two sizes for an adjustable fit.

Snap lock hinges make the glasses easier to put on and remove, while the curvature of the frame creates a wrapped fit for maximized field of vision. The hydrophobic lens repels moisture, features a military-grade anti-fogging treatment and an anti-scratch layer, and makes use of our new Rider Optimized Surface Enhancement (ROSE) technology.

The Pro Team Frameless Glasses are available in a range of frame colors with different lenses to suit a variety of light conditions: Dark Navy/Purple Green Lens, Black/Black Mirror Lens, White/
Pink Blue Lens, Pink/Black Mirror Lens.

 that‘s still the bar bag
  • 17 0
Yeah- I came in expecting to see a higher number and to make fun of it. I was thinking of zingers about Yeti's, dentists, and Porsche SUV owners. Perhaps the performance eyewear segment should all take a long look at their pricing... I mean if Rapha waltzes in and offers an economically viable alternative it should tell you something about your pricing?
  • 5 1
I guess they decided not to use their proprietary Clouds And Sunshine Handling (CASH) technology, and went with ROSE instead
  • 3 0
I was thinking that also. Some good looking specs though very familiar. Wondering if Luxottica is making them, not that it would be a bad thing...

@Sethimus: their waterproof bar bag looks nice.

isn't Rapha actually cheaper than other roadie brands? I have a couple Rapha road jerseys and they were cheap (they are the basic model).
  • 1 0
@gramboh: Rapha can be cheaper, its usually cheaper than Assos. The Rapha core lineup is pretty good stuff $120 bibs, $80 jerseys, and it goes on sale.

Can someone explain why riding glasses are way more expensive than goggles??
  • 3 0
As for riding glasses... Never will get the point of shelling out that kind of money, even if it’s “military grade” something. WTF?!

Pro-Tip: Decathlon/B-Twin Rockrider glasses. They come in grey, translucent and yellow (for those rainy days) and are ... 5 euros a pair.

Dick Pound just put his order in.

@korev: jawbreaker and speedtrap, adidas and Poc is what comes to my mind.

@korev: Bliz fusion fit the bill, and the bill is much less than these

I feel like “Rapha announces new eyewear line up” is a headline that every cycling news outlet has to find a new way to make seem exciting every 6-8 months. Has Rapha ever had an eyewear lineup last longer than 6 months before ditching it and starting from scratch?

Also these look like they got some help from 100% maybe?
  • 2 0
Probably luxottica since it’s made in Italy. Has all the trade marks of an Oakley glass.
  • 2 0
@Xenon303: I'd also put money on Luxottica. And also that you'll be able to get the knock-off on Amazonia or A-express in about a week for $22.50.
  • 2 0
Looks like an Oakley/POC combo glasses collection.
  • 3 0
I want to hate on these, but they look pretty stylish.

‘Made in Italy’ suggests these are probably made by Luxottica, same as Oakley, Ray Bans, and everything else.
  • 3 0
X-Tiger glasses are cheaper, lighter, and sound like I'd get about 20% more boost than what I'd get from Rapha.

 Walmart heirs, actually.

 "military grade anti fogging"...really...
  • 2 0
It's an actual thing, lens fogging in a gun fight is not ideal. Oakley makes combat goggles with electric fans.
