RockShox Presents Red Bull 5000 Down – A Mass Start Downhill Mountain Bike Race

For a second year, Red Bull 5000 Down hits Whistler Blackcomb with a mass start downhill mountain bike race. On September 11th and 12th, mountain bikers will gather at the peak of Whistler Mountain, at Whistler Blackcomb Resort in British Columbia and will descend more than 2,182 metres (7,159 feet) and a vertical of 1,530 metres (5,020 feet) in order to cross the finish line in the Whistler Village. All riders will need to sustain constant physical and mental effort to maintain control during the entire descent, which will take approximately 20 minutes for the fastest participants. Red Bull 5000 Down features 250 men and women starting simultaneously from the snow-capped peak of Whistler Mountain. Fly down past the Roundhouse Lodge, riders will enter the world-famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park at the top of the Garbanzo Express chairlift, before riding the Park’s giant slalom course and then finally crossing the finish line in Whistler Village. Over the course of two days, participants will be challenged by bar-to-bar racing as they battle side-by-side, dealing with fatigue and navigating through dirt trails riddled with jumps, stunts, drops and root-strewn terrain.

The event will draw some of the greatest North American and European riders to Whistler Blackcomb. Among the riders will be a combination of the sport’s emerging and established superstars, including 2008 World Champions Gee Atherton and Rachel Atherton, Red Bull Rampage 2009 winner Brandon Semenuk, Stevie Smith, Darren Berrecloth, Matti Lehikoinen and Filip Polc. The top five men will share a cash purse of $9,500 and the top three women will share $3,500.

How to Enter-
Categories are open to both men and women 17-years-old and over. Each racer will have to qualify on Saturday, September 11th for a spot in the race on Sunday, September 12. Out of the 400 qualified athletes, the fastest 250 will move on to the race on Sunday. Registration opens July 1st at www.eventsonline.ca/events/redbull5000down. No on-site registration is available.

From July 1st to August 9th, registration cost will be $60 for Whistler Blackcomb pass holders, $70 for non-pass holders. Registration includes race plate and a two-day pass to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Late registration (August 10th to September 9th) will be $80 for pass holders and $90 for non-pass holders.

Full body armor and a full face helmet are required for all participants. The event is free to spectators in the village.

I love how they say 250 riders, when last year only abot 150 showed up to qualify, so everyone made it to race day, its basically 2 days of doing the Garbo DH like during Crankworx, but add a bunch of fireroad from the Peak to Roundhouse, down Una Moss to the rest of the Garbo DH course...
  • 1 0
right... but not una moss. we did the fire road next to it.

Did it last year and it was awesome. By far the hardest downhill race you will ever do, dont think because you can race a Garbo lap for Crankworx and go alright you can expect a good result in this. your legs will be on fire by the time you hit the normal entrance to Original Sin from Gabanzo chair, and ever tried to over take on the Garbo race track at full speed? doesnt happen very easily. But its not all bad news, you will have a new appreciation for seeing the village at least. Its good to see some advertising a few months in advance instead of days on pinkbike. only 95 people were on the start line last year to, not 250. everyone cross your fingers the sun is out for us!!!

 DEATH RACE!!!
  • 1 0
a ~2km long descent with ~1.5km vertical drop makes it the steepest race ever, by far.
  • 1 0
cant be right... the video shows a normal looking dh trail, not an almost 35 degree on average trail.
  • 1 0
it would be more like 70 degree steep :p impossible for sure.
  • 1 0
i think they ment a direct line from start to finnish, not the length of the trail itself
  • 2 0
I think psychosis is the steepest race ever, by far. The top of the course doubles as a hang gliding launch pad.
  • 1 0
I think parts of the Champery WC course would give Psychosis a run for its money in terms of steepness.

Yep and I don't get the whole ~2km/~1.5km thing either. The course is over 2km long, its over 2km from the Peak to the Roundhouse, and that's as the crow flies. The article is just worded wrong.

The elevation of Whistler mountain is 2,182m so I'm guessing we're all getting confused about the way its worded. What the article means is the riders will descend from 2,181m to Whistler Village which is around 1,530m total descent, spread across the bike park.

Yep I've ridden the last Champery WC track and IMO it was steeper than Mt7.

That would make more sense.
