Red Bull Foxhunt: Course Preview with Rachel Atherton

Sep 29, 2016
by Red Bull Bike

The world’s only all-female downhill mountain bike event will take place in the picturesque surroundings of the Eden Valley, Cumbria, for the first time as Red Bull Foxhunt with Jeep returns this weekend. Following her ‘perfect season’, the downhill mountain bike world champion Rachel Atherton will welcome more than 230 female riders to the new race location, as anticipation builds ahead of the chase. Entries for Red Bull Foxhunt 2016 sold out in less than 8 hours, with double the number of female riders set to take part in a new, even more challenging downhill course for 2016.

The chase will commence on top of Melmerby Scar at an elevation of 596m, taking in stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Set over 2.07km, the race will start on the open terrain above the scar, and descend over rolling hills as the riders are funneled into a tighter course layout with sweeping berms through the bracken before a final jump section and pedal to the finish. Speaking about the new race location, and Red Bull Foxhunt 2016 course, Rachel said:

“This new course is in a gorgeous location and it’s set to challenge the racers with some technical features - including switchbacks, some steep and rocky terrain, and multiple line choices for maximum over-taking! I can’t wait.”

Did you know she trains with her brothers and that's why she's fast.......
  • + 7
@sewer-rat: at this point, her brothers train with her because she's fast.
  • + 6
@RussellTinka: no they don't, They do it because Claudio says they have too Beer

When will the Athertons learn how to adjust the angle of the chest mounted camera?!
I mean, nothing beats a nice view of the toptube... but...
Was the same with RB Hardline...

Nice video overall, though.

I only watched this because of her brothers

It's a little disappointing that the top female downhiller isn't pushing to make this course a little more challenging (although maybe she is, and there is something fighting against it). I think it would be great to see some tougher sections or features that would help the participants really push themselves and improve as mountain bikers. I mean if you're signing up to race against Rachel Atherton, you should assume the course will be hard and you might have to send it a bit. I agree with the multiple line choices for overtaking, but the lines should still be hard. Build in a couple of drops or take a pile of those rocks and do an extra rock garden. This is like a field enduro into 30 seconds of blue level bike park.

 "Redbull not too hard line"

 Same shit every year

 Dude this is the uk.
The health and safety bull shit would not allow it. It's all risk assessment and red tape.

Not like you Canadians where you can ride & race the gnarliest stuff.
  • + 1
@delcol: Isn't Wales part of the UK? Just thinking about Hardline here like triptex mentioned. I know it's a separate country so different regulations, but if H&S/liability was the concern in Cumbria then you'd think they would consider moving the event. Make the Welsh hills an Atherton-trail haven where they can help progress the sport!

@juicebanger: there's no difference in legislation buddy. The difference with hardline is the fact it's pro's riding it etc and not the public. However saying that this course looks incredibly tame for this type of event

the intent of the race is to encourage all girl/lady riders to enter. its not a dh race, its not an enduro race, its not an xc race either. its a fun run designed to get girls/ladies riding.

the snow race i enter every winter is stupid lame on the gnar but its the most fun i have all winter.

I think that's the opposite of what this races intention is. I think foxhunt is meant to encourage female riders to try racing. I had a decline with an article about the first foxhunt a few years back and a huge chunk of the field all said it was their first race. I think rach's intention is a lot different than dan's when it comes to why to host a race.

@cptstoney: didn't see your response when I posted the same below. My bad!
  • + 6
There has to be space to overtake as that's the concept... thus the wide open course... as mentioned above its to encourage participation, and in that sense its a good course. Fun and a good day out not knar.
  • + 1
 @VwHarman: great minds think alike.
  • + 1
 @sewer-rat: exactly what I ment.
Hardline ain't your average joe off the street it's invite only. Hand selected pro riders.

The local coucil always tear down the fun stuff in the local woods it always down to h&s
Even the kids in school ain't allowed to play conkers any more as it is a h&s risk.

it needs to be suitable for a variant of riders, the weather and terrain was a hard combination together to ride. I agree it could of been made harder but riding it in the wind and rain was a hard feet, especially after all girls had to climb up the hill numerous times to just seed and race as the uplift was not working. Big hats off to all the ladies.

Well, I didn't know that this is only 5-10 mins away. I presumed these events happen down south or in Wales.

Now the winds died, the suns showing itself (rarity) so do I go spectate, have a bbq or fire up the gasser

I've not read all the way down but the first few comments take the piss. It blatnetly isn't hard line never was never going to be it's about (particularly in this instance) getting people that aren't sponsored or ranked and giving them a chance to race against a pro (in this instance the best female dh racer ever) Rachel makes stuff look easy it'll be hard to get near her speed on any of the sections????
  • + 1
I was watching this race for a short time. Well, it wasn't that fast or extremly technical, but hopefully all of the participants enjoyed the view and the ride. Smile All kind of biking is cool. (Mostly mountainbiking... Big Grin )

Single crown fork, Remedy or Slash?

I'm guessing Remedy just because it has the same wheel size as the session that she races.
