During the 2018 Redbull Hardline downhill race.

PRESS RELEASE: Red Bull Bike

The toughest downhill mountain bike race in the world, Red Bull Hardline, returns to the hills of Dinas Mawddwy, Wales on 15th September for the sixth year.

Hard by name, hard by nature, Red Bull Hardline isn’t a race for the faint-hearted. Built by local riding legend Dan Atherton on a remote Welsh mountain, the course combines epic gap jumps, giant slab rolls and tight wooded sections. The star of the show is the road gap – a huge booter sending the riders over a road back into the trees. It's 26ft high and rider trajectory is around 55ft (the height of four double-decker buses). Riders have to come off the gap at full speed to clear the road and land heavily into a big berm which transfers them back into the trees.

The 2018 edition saw home favourite Gee Atherton taking home the trophy for the first time after a nail-biting final in front 3,000 spectators. Bernard Kerr came in second with Charlie Hatton in third.

In 2018, twenty riders battled the wet conditions in qualifying. The weather and the long technical course proved difficult for some riders to handle with past winners such as Craig Evans failing to qualify. In the finals, Gee Atherton took the win for the first time in the race’s history after an epic battle between with Benard Kerr and Charle Hatton.

500 tickets will be made available for each day and tickets are sold per car, meaning you can pack up with your friends and prepare for a legendary day out for just £40 + booking fee (max five people per car). In 2019, spectators will again have access to more of the course than in previous years with viewing areas accessible further up the track.

Early bird tickets are available from 8 am on June 1 until midnight on June 9. Saturday tickets cost £20 and Sunday cost £40 per car. From June 10 the remaining tickets will cost £30 on Saturday and £50 on Sunday per car.

For more information and to buy tickets please visit redbull.com/hardline.

All the action from the finals will be broadcast live on Red Bull TV.

They would refuse to race that, seriously

I'm sure plenty of pros get invited that are never likely to turn up.
Risk Vs reward:
Huge risk / not much reward

 @IllestT: heard of rampage?
  • + 6
@zyoungson: trouble is hardline is how rampage used to be. Rampage is shit now. It’s just a smooth slope course. Gees run last year was at race pace while hitting huge jumps in the pouring rain. It’s not like semenuk can’t ride it but he’d be miles off the pace. Same with the other rampage riders.
  • + 4
@mikelee: lol if you think rampage is like a smooth slope course i think you need to rewatch it lol, and tbf i think semenuk would probs give some of the wc racers a good run for their money
  • + 8
@noahr2011: how about you watch the first few rampage events and compare it to now. It used to be fast, dangerous, rough lines none of this go up with a team and smooth out the course then crawl down real slow before pulling a circus trick off some jump.
  • + 4
@noahr2011: I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of the rampage riders do well at hardline. Definitely interested to see if any of them fancy it.
  • + 3
@mikelee: did you see Brendon’s line rampage?
  • + 3
 @mikelee: Brendon fairclough
  • + 0
@thenotoriousmic: yes I saw his line and how slow he rode it. He’s a quality rider but couldn’t hit hardline as fast as certain racers. Brendon fairclough could do hardline for sure but even last year josh brycland said he’s ok riding it but would never race it. Also Greg said he’d never ride it.
  • + 1
@mikelee: yeah but it was way beyond anything you’d do at hardline. Obviously finding myself about to drop in at ether event is my worst nightmare but out of the two I’d pick hardline definitely.
  • + 1
@mikelee: ha smooth slope course? You have any idea how loose and rough the terrain is there? Sure it looks smooth on tv...
  • + 1
@ThunderChunk: I’m not saying rampage is all smooth but the rough sections are ridden very slowly unless it’s maybe brendan fairclough hitting it. I’m not saying rampage is easy I’m saying there’s no way any of the rampage riders could win hardline. They could get down hardline I’m sure. But no way they'd beat gee or an actual racer. Hardline is against the clock rampage is not.
  • + 2
@mikelee: mate... what? I don’t think you’ve been paying attention. Rampage is next level nuts. Go and watch aggies 2016 run.
  • + 1
@thenotoriousmic: it’s nuts but slow! No one is hitting it at race pace are they? So the original post was people saying invite rampage riders to hardline, which I’m saying none of them could ride hardline fast enough to win! Not that they couldn’t ride it ffs
  • + 2
@noahr2011: Rampage is definitely not the same as it used to be though...Last years venue was bollocks compared to 10 years ago!
  • + 0
@OscarOgden: nah i disagree iv watched plenty of footage of all of the rampages and and its way gnarlier now, if youd said it was like slopestyle in 2015 id agree cause it had all the wooden ramps and everything but its a lot bigger than it looks on camera
  • + 0
@mikelee: rampage isnt a race though you don't watch rampage to see people go fast you watch rampage to see people go big and progress the sport style>speed any day if you ask me
  • + 1
@mikelee: mate you must be on another level if you think that’s slow. They get down the mountain in less than a min on what looks to be sand hitting massive jumps that you won’t get over unless your going fast.
  • + 1
@noahr2011: check out gee athertons second place rampage run in the second ever rampage to see how fast the guys used to hit it.

 Best race of the year.

Certainly the most covered with video - just awesome to watch.
  • + 1
Last year I thought the coverage was a bit meh - maybe because the weather was so bad !? Hopefully not so shitty conditions this year, although there’s better chances of we all hit that 55ft gap than have a sunny day for the race...

Awesome race. Love watching how crazy theese guys send
  • + 6
 Well, I'm excited!

 Sweet.

We need someone to ride it with a downcountry bike

I hope there’s a bright future for this event and would love to see more events like hardline. Pushing the evolution of DH

Gary Busey and Ozzy should be the only commentators for the Hardline and Rampage.
  • + 2
Maybe have live coverage this year?

Same weekend as Ard Moors Enduro grrrrrrr really wanted to go to hard-line this year!
  • - 1
Downvoted because you're torn between racing a great event and spectating a great event? Pinkbike is a strange place to be sometimes.
  • + 0
@metaam: I didn't say I was torn, I'm 100% riding Ard Moors, I'm just saying I really wanted to go to hard-line this year.
  • + 2
 Can't wait
