Red Bull Rampage 2014: Looking Back - Andreu

Oct 17, 2014
by Danielle Baker

bigquotesI rode the same bike all year and coming from the last Fest Series I was more confident than ever. I wanted to build and ride a big line and have fun with it.

bigquotesI arrived without any builders, it's not easy to bring a crew from Europe, but people were stoked to help out and I got a sick team going within a few days! We had awesome builders and it ended up being the craziest line I have ever ridden. It was a lot of work but building is the best part about Rampage.

bigquotesI wanted to go fast top to bottom and I wanted to ride the steepest and biggest section out there. That was it, the line was there and just needed a few big landings to build to connect the whole thing. It was a lot of work but it ended up being amazing!

bigquotesThere are always issues; building a line takes a lot of time and energy, you have to respect that. Everything I rode this year I had to share it with other riders. Just team up and then you have someone to dig with.

Andreu Lacondeguy was on very serious and focused before going on course today. After placing fourth three times he was not settling again.

bigquotesI'm really sure that if Aggy didn't get hurt I would probably have had to do a second run but that wasn't the case. I didn't want to risk my life again, I know it was probably not the coolest thing to do but I didn't want to take a chance on the wind again. There's always victory runs in slopestyle and no one complains, I wasn't going to do a 70 foot drop on a victory run so I went around, got lost, and almost went over the bars. Haha.

Andreu on a victory lap--just a simple flat spin 3 of the RZR booter. Nothing too complicated.

bigquotesRampage is so sick because you build what you will ride, you are not riding someone else's idea. You build where you want to go and this is why it's so awesome. Rampage was a little bit stressful when it came to the wind situation; you are building your dream line and you build it for no wind conditions, but the finals are not always dead calm.

bigquotesI was stoked, I heard all the scores from the top and I knew that my run was going to be up there too. I was super nervous at the top, the wind was picking up a little bit and I had two huge drops that were really exposed to the wind. I just wanted to drop in and get it done. When I got to the bottom I was excited, I had just ridden the most insane line I had ever done and everything worked perfect! I just rode my line and won Red Bull Rampage! I had a crazy season and that was a good ender.

bigquotesI went to the Bit 'n Spur [pub] to celebrate and that's all I remember from that night. Sorry for partying!

That drop is so hard to comprehend how big it is. The sequence shot kinda helps but still... it doesn't fit in the entire frame, not even close. nutty. definitely deserved the win. woulda been hilarious to see him tearing up the bit n spur, haha.
  • 2 1
Yeah just the distance from the knuckle mid way down he clears to where he lands is big in my book

that was a horrific pun sewer-rat (or even worse spelling)

Andreu's top drop off the nose was smaller, but had frightening exposure like Rob Warner with six pints in him.
This is the one:

He deserved the win 200%. Stomped that shit from top to bottom.
Rad motherf*cking shredder!

on the 2nd b&w sequence shot he's already 3 bike lengths out and his head is still higher than the edge of the drop... i'd say he was committed.

We seen her in Chatel back in the summer when Andreu was competing. She was one of those chicks that stood out from a mile away. Beautiful and blonds ain't usually my thing. Top bloke Andreu was too, my mates a massive fan of his and he was only too happy to stop for a chat and photo's.

This is for all the ladies - SEXIEST RIDER EVER . Boom.Happy to say I am super stoked that the men are full on talented, freaky and full on sexy as hell on their bikes. I'm sure I'll get like a million negative props. Whatever. Sick sick sick stuff. Good on all of you, and yay Andreu.

Andrue...definitely 200% deserved that win..,now Zink on the other hand...not sayin his run wasn't sick,,,just don't think he deserved second....just sayin,,,,

True only big thing was his entry chute and the 3 drop, very little flow or tricks..
  • 9 0
The photo sequence of that 70 footer is too cool for huck school
  • 1 0
It's crazy in the 4th photo he's supposed to be landing but he keeps going and going
  • 7 0
Embodies the spirit of freeride, was cool to see him kill it.

I love how stoked Andreu is about, seemingly, all aspects of riding. Nice work on the win.
  • 2 0
That drop is HUGE haha, props. He seems pretty modest despite how pro these guys are and is always having a good time. Definitely makes others want to get on their bike and go ride!
  • 6 2
Im not saying andreu was robbed cause his line was the burliest of all, but did anyone else feel like semenuk was underscored? even with all the tricks he did he had some massive hits in his line as well
  • 1 2
His line was very groomed. Thus removing some of the big mountain aspect of the line, if he had left some sections rough and not smoothed as much as he did then he would have done better..
  • 3 0
I was there!!! And he deserved to win!! Hands down!! Pics do it no justice. He was top to bottom in 1:06 insane. Hit everything perfect!!! That cliff is HUGE!!! go stand next to a 7 story building and look up. And the rumor around our campsite was it was 79ft!!!

So where can I buy a fest shirt/support these guys?
Hopefully kelly got some royalty from the rb rampage shirt I bought too!

btw, still prefer the old format, the photos dont fit into the screen, i can only see half a photo and have to scroll down to see the other half. font is big and difficult to read, please dont do this in the world cup season next year
  • 1 0
I have to say pics don't do justice andreu had the best line when we built his line we new it was bigger than every one else's and he had best style for sure. Yeah it might of been different if aggie didn't crash but either way. Sick as fuck I'm stoked for him

Once my ankle did 180, thats way better I ever have done Big Grin
  • 9 0
Nothing stranger than looking down and seeing your foot on backwards.
  • 3 1
why do many of the top guys wear braces ,or whatever you call them, around thier ankles ?
  • 9 0
Probably so they don't roll their ankles as bad when they bail from the bike and land on feet etc.
  • 13 0
Because once you fuck an ankle it says fucked. Braces help.
  • 4 0
where can I get said brace, I bail a LOT.
  • 2 1
Yes and no. Most of these riders have suffered quite some damage to their ankles from riding. This is a bit of protection to save their ankles on massive drops, 3's or bails. I use 'm too, my ankles can't handle big drops without the braces. Wearing them helps me out a lot. Messed them up a few years ago and they're still weak.

I don't see a brace that's designed to stop sideways movement helping with a drop. It limits you from rolling your ankles. Some 510 impacts, right tire pressure, and suspension tuning would help on drops.
  • 9 0
Ratty is a good example of what happens when you don't wear one..
  • 1 0
Shock doctor. the ones they make is not only for sideways movement. It limits the rolling but also your up/down movement. It deffo works for me.
  • 3 0
One of the most common and annoying tweaks or sprains that occur from landing off of big drops is ankles. second is probably wrists. If your foot is slightly out of place on your pedal, especially if its too far back, on a big ass drop its super easy to geak it on the landing. even if you land it fine.

And the fact that they are doing HUGE technical tricks that might call for them to ditch their bike mid air. Ankles are usually the first to go landing "without" a bike too...
  • 4 0
I always wore the McDavid braces, they make a huge difference both for riding and crashing.
  • 1 0
Just this yr...moved my feet a little more forward on the pedal....what a difference! So much better....easier on the ankles. What are those knee pads he's wearing btw?...look nicely padded but low key as well....
  • 2 0
A thanks guys ! The pads look like they're from scott
  • 1 0
^Thx ...just checked the Scott stuff...some very decent looking protective gear. Didn't know they had anything besides goggles..haha. I'll have to check the MX shop one day
