Red Bull Wide Open Cancelled

Jul 4, 2014
by Red Bull Bike
ATP Livigno and Red Bull are sorry to inform that the event Red Bull Wide Open, set for July 11-13 in Livigno, has been cancelled.

The interruption of the track construction caused by the Corpo Forestale’s controls, doesn’t allow the completion of the race track, therefore creating serious safety issues for the athletes.
For this reason, APT Livigno and Red Bull have decided to cancel the event.

Luca Moretti, President of APT Livigno has declared: “I am confident in a positive resolution of the incident, considering that APT Livigno requested and received all necessary authorizations and has followed all regulations requested for the building of the track. I am though very disappointed and sadden as I believe that Livigno lost an important chance to show the world how much it is doing for the bike scene, considering the importance of this event on an International level.

Snaking 500 meters down the Bikepark Mottolino in Livigno, Italy, Red Bull Wide Open will feature a custom, one of a kind Super-cross size downhill track. Especially designed to challenge the competitors on a variety of levels, the athletes will have to tackle terrain with unheard of levels of speed and air time. Side-by-side they will race down a course riddled with jaw dropping 60’ gaps, massive 20’ berms, wallrides, and technical rock waterfalls. The broad elite of competitors will attack this new course concept in a non-stop, six man head-to-head competition.

and Red Bull doesn't help with injury bills?
  • 8 0
@shredward. red bull only helps with injury bills for their own athletes I'm pretty sure...

You mean like MX? Yeah we don't want events like this, people might enjoy watching it and start to care about mtb...

sounds fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!! too bad it got canned sounded like a massive effort to build a quality track to accommodate 6 riders at a time but would def be must see TV

I was looking forward to this event all year. What a disappointment.
  • 6 0
no wonder their track preview video had no shots of the actual track under construction... a lotta hype for nothing Frown hopefully they can get it together for next year because this is an amazing idea.
  • 3 1
sounds rad... if you like to see carnage.
  • 4 0
^ Ye have little faith in the bike slayers. I think they would have no issue hammering down it together.
  • 5 0
@dmadness does that mean you don't want to watch it? Have you ever seen mx? 40 guys racing for the same line out of the gate. How about boarderX or bmx? You don't think these guys can handle racing 6 at a time for a few seconds? This event has amazing potential if they can get it off the ground

Look into highland mountains "battle of hellion". Same format but on their jump trail. Super cool race. I think it would be awesome on a D.H. course.

Hopefully someone's else will jump in on this concept , and riding it a little bit because it sounds like it would be an awesome race

I live in Livigno, 200 meters from the track. we had the world championship back in 2005. Nobody said anything against it; but now, a fu****g di**head published on his Facebook page some photos and said that the track was larger than it should be, so the foresters decided to close it. But now the track is basically finished. Ita

what an idiot. hope they sort things out

Sadly my trip to Livigno is now cancelled ..... Frown ... big thanks to that fu****g di**head ....

Forestry police? Sounds like if you get caught in the forest in Italy you'd better have a bill or 2 tucked behind 'your papers'.

Please sandodcmando, lay off the stereotypes! There are plenty of other countries that could teach us a thing or two about brown envelopes. I agree there's something very wrong but it has less to do with backhanders and more to do with a lack of due diligence. The track was allowed to be prepared to within a few days of completion without any checks from the local authorities who gave the original permit. I'd be more pissed off with the council who seem to have had plenty of time to look at someone's facebook page instead of monitoring construction progress on the track.

 Bummer, this had potential
  • 3 0
I don't think it's only because of forestry rules.
The main trackbuilder (Jeremy Witek) has been complaining on Instagram for weeks, saying that they had not been given the right tools and that they had only been given 20days for something that required at least 40 days of work

 still safer than Rampage...
  • 6 0
ANY event is safer than rampage. Huge props and respect for the guys that compete in rampage to progress our sport.

 despite that shitty prize money
  • 3 0
@shuwukong, Your right Rampage prize money is shitty, the amount of money they give out is crazier than the lines there.

All the comments in Pinkbike were deleted in relation to the race. all of them were quite positive. One wonder's why?
Some editors dont like the head to head racing just because they suck at it.
  • 12 1
Good job Italy, really good job... a**holes
  • 6 1
Wait a minute there, before shitting up on stereotypes or anything else, it is good to clear out the real reason for cancelling the event. And despite press has put out that the reason is SAFETY, it is not true. The agreement between race organization and the local forestry police was that the track should be 4m wide, and what happened is that at points it came up to f...ing 15m. So before complaining that your trip has been canceled, and the sport "lost a lot" with such decision, I ask you: Ever been to Livigno? That place is sacred ground and trails are beautifully made to minimum impact and maximum riding fun, so one does not just dig around all they believe they can. f*ck Red Bull and f*ck whoever thought they could open an AVENUE in that place.
  • 4 0
Totally agree. I ride so I get out and enjoy the outdoors, not fuck up the natural environment just so some over marketed sugar water company can push more of their crap down our throats.
  • 5 0
I'll jump on this band wagon. Never been there but ya, f.... them (red bull and whoever) that place rules, I've heard.

I was going to take my 8 year old son to watch... Italian burocrazia at it's finest once again! This is an amazing country, shame about the way it's governed.
  • 5 0
I was there today. The track looked so cool that we had planned to go back to watch the race next week. There is nothing else that compares to this track anywhere in the world. And I have seen a lot. Bummer...

YouTube Woodward bmx supercross. 8 riders, huge gaps, 20in bikes, no suspension. Would have loved to see Mike Day sign up for this.
  • 1 2
you mean bmx?? yea hes done a little bit of those i think
  • 2 0
Yeah.. I got to see the downhill bmx race at Woodward west in person. The biggest gap was over 50ft. Insane to see them hit that.
  • 3 0
I have to say I've been looking forward to this all year and I'm totally gutted. I would still like to see pictures of the track if anyone has them or knows where to find any.
  • 2 1
I rode with the producer Todd Barber back in December and we talked about it. He said it's a course like the Dan and Gee Atherton Quarry (but a tad less gnarly) with 6 guys racing head to head. After hearing him talk about it, it sounds sick. Can't wait to see it!
  • 5 1
First, I want to see this!!! Second, Ace is gonna race? Now I really wanna see it!!!!
  • 4 0
I'm italian, and when things like this happens, I'm ashamed to be italian...

 Biggest anti-climax of 2014!

Hopefully it goes ahead for next year. Iam glad I they gave us some notice before I flew all they way out there to race. Cheers To red bull wide open 2015

i was there to build the course with an amazing crew
and i've felt how the people of Livigno were disapointed!!!
Shame on You buddy who made this shit happens!!

and for the riders.... Trust me Livigno is a wonderful place!!!!
instagram: roberentong (to watch some pics of the course)

I read and watched another article with an actual course preview although the course was only 90 percent complete. They stated some world renown rider complained to forrest service and got it shut down. Pinkbike doesn't seem to be reporting on any of that side of it.

 Paging Myles Rockwell.
  • 3 1
Saw it coming, there was almost no publicity of the event on the last days, pretty bummed. One of the few events Andreu was stoked to be
  • 3 1
I am VERY DISAPPOINTED. I have literally been looking forward to is for several months. I would have bet $100 on Kyle Straight.

Just do it on A-Line. Smile

  • 3 2
All my respect to Slopestyle riders are on it! .. Martin & Sam !! they're definitely cool on DH bike!!! my support on them ... doesn't matter who win it
  • 4 1
Do it in Utah. We'll accommodate the needs of the trail.
  • 2 0
Way to F it up. With names like that wanting to compete how do you cancel this without finding a solution.

  • 3 1
Where did all the original posts go?

It's gunna have to be gnarly or it will just end up being 4cross with 6 riders......
  • 3 0
 FUCk, the world.
  • 2 0
So real life downhill domination from the ps2? Sad this got cancelled.
  • 1 0
Speaking of which, tell me again why we don't we have a legitimate MTB game for Xbox or playstation yet?????
  • 1 0
Yeah imagine if companies like Dice and Black box were to make an MTB game. That would be epic. Imagine A game where there is an open world forest so you can explore and freeride and also events similar to Gran Turismo but it will include Crankworx, Rampage, etc. The physics and gravity system will be similar to skate 3 but implemented on bikes instead. But sadly that will never happen...
  • 1 0
I was really looking forward to this. It was suppose to be something really different. Well there goes my hopes.
  • 3 2
I wanna see Jared Graves in this
  • 1 0
has anybody heard if they're gunna use WOOD at Rampage?
