Reed Boggs has been announced as the latest athlete added to Yeti's roster. Boggs, 23, has competed in two Rampage events and won the inaugural Proving Grounds qualifier last year. He announced he was leaving his sponsor of the past 3 years, Trek, in December and it's now confirmed he's inked with the Colorado brand for the new season.

Yeti launched its longest travel platform, the SB165, in July last year and it looks like that's what Boggs will be using for his long-travel ventures. The bike is normally specced with a 180mm single crown fork but these pictures show Boggs using it with a Bomber 58, which comes with 203mm of travel as standard. It isn't be the first converted enduro bike we've seen in the hills of Utah as Graham Agassiz turned up on an equally wild Evil Wreckoning LB at Rampage this year.

Reed Boggs Yeti SB165

Boggs, who lives in Hurricane, Utah, will be heading to the McGazza Fest in New Zealand, attending Crankworx events and some stops of the Fest series. His ultimate goal will be another spot on the starting list for Rampage though.

bigquotesReed is a strong rider and will bring a dynamic riding style to the Yeti program. Personable and down to earth, we were impressed with his focus on progression and how much fun he has on the bike. His love for riding has inspired some incredible content. We’re looking forward to working with Reed to develop new products and support his creativity on the bike.Kristi Jackson, Yeti’s director of marketing

bigquotesI’m thrilled to be signing with Yeti Cycles. I had the chance to visit Yeti HQ last week to see what happens behind the scenes and was overwhelmed by everything. Once I rode the SB165, I knew it would be a great bike for me - just enough suspension for big drops and nimble enough to flick around corners and throw whips. I’m looking forward to getting Yeti into their first Red Bull Rampage. Thanks for the opportunity.Reed Boggs

didn't expect freeride is going full enduro!

 No one did.

@chyu: enduro bikes always were freeride bikes.

Shit, it doesnt look like a session

 @rideordont: HuH ? - The Intense team prefers the Carbine - a 5” - 5.5” - now 5.9” trail bike
Most freeride bikes on the shore were 6.5” - 8” RM Slayer / Rm 7 /9 , Kona Stinky, Cove STD, Intense Uzzi ,Norco VPS - im pretty sure no Enduro racer wants a 40 lb plus bike

Hopefully we see a Yeti SB200 29” Switch DH Bike and a new team

I see him with a Yeti DJ... YETI BRING THE DJ BACK AND LET US ALL BUY ONE.
  • 7 0
interesting there was no comment on that in the release
  • 10 0
Wonder if we'll see him on a yeti 4x too What a throwback
  • 10 0
can't believe they still had 4x models any kicking around the warehouse. maybe they still have a welding machine under the warehouse dust
  • 38 4
Or you could support one of the many other companies who didn't quit making them and have up to date geo.
  • 5 0
I have one of those black Yeti DJ's. Sold my original one and kicked my self for it. Took me 7 years or so to find another one someone was willing to let go of. I live not far from Yeti and even asked if I could buy an old one laying around the warehouse, didn't even care if it had a warranty....no luck. Those things are mint and it's hard to find them because once someone gets one, they never sell it or want crazy money for them.
  • 6 0
Right? Looks like that's one of the 2010 models though.
  • 26 2
@poleczechy: they picked his up off craigslist.
  • 7 0
@poleczechy: That's because it is. It's probably been sitting in a very dark dusty corner of the YETI warehouse for the last decade. At least it's finally being used again. I don't see YETI making a new DJ / Slope bike anytime soon.
  • 10 1
Lusted after a yeti 4X for so long until they dropped 4X, DJ an DH from their line up an went full on dentist enduuhhro
  • 6 0
 @nojzilla: Denduro
  • 7 4
Paying $2200 for a DJ that will get thrashed and scratched up? No thanks.
  • 5 1
@bman33: I work at a yeti dealer and have asked multiple times about any DJ frame they may have kicking around.. I have a DJ frame built up for racing BMX, but considered picking up a second frame for a spare bike to keep a derailleur and 4x type build on.

Every time I asked them about any DJs around they told me that even their employees were buying bikes off Craigslist/Pinkbike when they showed up because they didn't have any more.. So either they were lieing to me, or they made him a new one or one of the employees gave up theirs for him.

I would think that if they made him a one off, they wouldn't have just painted it the same as the old one, so my guess is that this was in the back of the warehouse or it came from an employee.
  • 1 0
@me2menow: That one has been on Pinkbike off and on for a long time. I have the last year made now, the black one like in Reed's pics above. Thanks though
  • 3 2
@5afety3rd: Well when Mike was off getting his silly looking pre cased bike made he could have also asked Genio to make some bootleg Yeti DJ frames since they were making Yeti alum frames....

@poleczechy Yup it's the 2010 and onward frame with the tapered headtube and the adjustable dropouts.

@BEERandSPOKES and @man-wolf They don't need to reinvent anything. The Yeti DJ geo like the P.3's were WAY ahead of their time and pretty much dialed in years ago.
  • 2 3
@NorCalNomad: Yeah you're right, they could put out the same exact bike from 10 years ago and all the Yeti fanboys would still fork over for it immediately.
  • 1 0
@NorCalNomad: I never said they had to reinvent anything. Hell they had 3 sizes at one point. I'm just saying I doubt they are making a new one. And that thing is definitely from 2010-2012. Know your history, or at least do a little more research duder!!!
  • 2 1
@BEERandSPOKES: I know my Yeti DJ history, rode every single iteration of that frame they actually sold. Your reading comprehension might need the work.
  • 1 0
 Probably a fake lol @5afety3rd:

I didn't even realize that Reed had a dental degree?!?
  • 1 0
Nice yeti picked up reed for marketing but I still can’t afford a root canal
  • 48 1
This is the year of the SB200, finally!
  • 23 1
 ^^^ 100% this!! ^^^

Weld up a few Aluminum frames, paint ‘em turq/yellow, but Boggs in the hill in Utah and let Ritchie hit the WC downhill scene.

Let’s do this, Yeti!
  • 8 1
I doubt it man. Look at aggy. We all thought, “Oh EVIL is finally going to make a 27.5 Undead.” We see Aggy at rampage with an EVIL Wreckoning fitted with 27.5 wheels.

Don’t get me wrong, I think all mtb companies should have the full range. YETI, EVIL, MARIN, etc. I don’t think companies realize there is a huge difference between hitting rock garden gnar and massive dirt jumps.

I mean f*ck, Hyper bikes makes one off DH frames exclusive for their free riders. And they are a BMX focused company.

It’s wishful thinking if they bring out a SB200.
  • 7 0
@Happypanda1337: Seaking of YETI and Evil specifically (not sure on Marin), but I am pretty sure they are fully aware of the difference in "rock garden gnar and massive dirt jumps" Yeti for one had Gwin, Graves, Rude. They know, they just don't see the benefit financially of fronting a WC team and building out a full on DH rig anymore. Evil being a much smaller company is probably in a similar situation

flag BigLips93 (Jan 14, 2020 at 13:00) (Below Threshold)
I don't think Yeti is going to make a DH bike, the stock SB165 geo is squarely in DH bike territory, with a 200mm fork it gets even more extreme! They way their bikes use rear travel, I think he'll be more than comfortable on big mountain terrain.
  • 7 0
@BigLips93: SB165 is not a DH bike. He's coming off a Trek Session with 210mm...I'm sure SB165 is enough bike for most but it shouldn't be enough for people at the top of their freeride game.
  • 4 0
@BigLips93: have you ever ridden a DH bike on big hits? Have you ever ridden a trail bike on big hits? Big difference. What these guys are doing is taking risks on smaller travel bikes and pushing the boundaries of the machines. Not riding purpose built bikes for their respective applications. He won't be more than comfortable. He'll actually be more than uncomfortable, but pushing limits
  • 1 0
@leviatanouroboro: yeah if you have to buy another one once it breaks you won’t try it
  • 1 2
100% agree and especially since yetis blow through travel so quickly @Altron5000:
  • 2 1
@Happypanda1337: Hyper more than likely just picked a catalog frame and stuck their name on it
  • 39 8
So, trail bikes at rampage is what the future looks like? What a world.

That's a downtrail bike, good sir.

I wonder how many DJ frames yeti still have hanging around in Golden...
  • 4 0
I was told none... Our rep said that even Yeti employees were buying used DJs when they popped up for sale.
  • 3 0
None, I asked the other day about if the pre 2010 DJ had an ISCG 03 or 05 tabs and they didn't even have one to reference since the manual doesn't say.
  • 1 0
@NorCalNomad: remind me and I can go look at mine.

"It isn't be the first converted enduro bike we've seen in the hills of Utah"

True. Nate Hills has had a triple clamp on his SB165 for a little while too.
  • 6 0
I was preparing to leave a comment about how I want Yeti to develop another dedicated downhill bike before remembering how much I enjoy eating. They make beautiful bikes that I could never afford.
  • 3 0
Try PB BuySell. You'll find 100s of Yeti for sale if your budget does not allow for a new frame/bike. And you won't regret it -- Yetis really have something special (and I'm not talking about their price).
  • 1 0
@cool3: I have enough money for a new bike... just not a Yeti. I do have a bike on buy/sell though...
  • 1 0
@bwgemmil: you should try one, though. Maybe you'd change your mind. Smile
  • 3 0
@cool3: Oh I've ridden a bunch of Yetis and loved them. They were demos and friends bikes. I'd own one in a heartbeat if they made something mid to sub 3k. They make great frames I just can't justify the cost and I refuse to finance another bicycle.
  • 9 4
 Shoutout to yetis marketing team.

They are going from a brand that only does high end dentist bikes and seems pretentious to becoming a brand that looks like they’re down to drink a ton of beers after a day of riding and still makes bad ass bikes.
  • 7 2
From Treck to Yeti ? Why ? Trek has an amazing bike for Slopestyle and the Session is an awesome bike for freeridin like rampage or the fest series. And yeti had a DJ frame back in 2010....and he is holding a frame thats a decade old.......downgrade much ?

flag bigmeatpete420 (Jan 14, 2020 at 14:38) (Below Threshold)
No massive upgrade. Yeti is light years ahead of trek. Plus hes going where the paycheck is. Remember theres people who ride crap bikes with crap parts because they get PAID to do so
  • 8 1
Glad to have you, Reed! Welcome to Yeti

www.pinkbike.com/news/reed-boggs-parts-ways-with-trek.html
Maybe it is a freeride bike after all. Maybe freeride ain’t about the bike. Maybe clouds ARE made of unicorn farts.
  • 2 0
Oooh- this is interesting as Yeti has always had a race/competition program emphasis. This may signal then a commitment to develop some different/re-work bikes? Kinda like how when Graves and Rude focused on Enduro- so did their development.
  • 5 0
Yeti, PLEASE make a new dirt jump frame and release it to the public
  • 2 1
They are going to have a 180mm-200mm rear travel this year. 165mm is 6.496 inches, 180mm is 7.087 inches and 203mm is 7.992. So upforking raises the bottom bracket by 25mm from the standard 180mm fork. So running it this way, the front has 1.5 inches of travel more than the rear. And the head angle must be around 62°. f*ck!!!! Why do I care about numbers???? I'm stoked for Boggs
  • 1 0
That was my thinking. I think it must be 180 on the front somehow adjusted down. It would ride much better that way.
  • 1 0
This was quite a curveball! But none the less considering that he’s running the 2009 dirt jumper and the sb165 I think it means yeti is going to come out with a new DJ and possibly a DH bike!
  • 4 0
Welp that was outta fucking nowhere.
  • 1 0
Evil bikes did this Enduro bike put a 203 dual fork on the Red bull Rampages with Aagi.. put a very high spring rate. And I seen this in Nomad 4 frame with a dual crown too and it works and I'm gonna do it on my N4 soon.
  • 4 0
And here we have the Yeti in it's natural habitat, the desert.

  • 1 0
What's yours weigh? For a long time I thought I had the most top tier DJ build with carbon wheels/cranks/bar on mine. But you actually may have mine beat.

Mine was 20.8lbs and size long.
  • 2 0
 @swan3609:

I never weighed it to be honest. It felt really light until I put on a set of Fox 36’s.

Size is a large. I bought it early last year from someone on Pinkbike. It was well used, plenty of chips and scuff marks. I had it resprayed, replaces the badges and got it invisiframed.

I shall do the exact same with the Yeti Super X frame I got.
  • 1 0
@iamsuperficial: you bastard! I have been searching for a SuperX frame.

Glad to see someone is taking the time to restore these bikes! Good on you!
  • 1 0
 @swan3609:

Thanks! These frames are so rare, I’ve been looking for years!

Previously I’ve seen two others for sale. One as a complete bike, the other as a frame only but it was sold within a day.

  • 3 0
 Well done. Cleveland represent!
  • 4 0
 weird.
  • 3 0
Good way to make their DJ frames highly sought after, stop selling them!
  • 1 0
Will it boost yeti sales? To me yeti associated with mid travel bikes for 40+ for recreational trail riding, I would say this is most desirable target audience for any brand
  • 1 0
I dont think anyone expected that one. I think its going to be a good fit though.
  • 8 10
you know what would suck. Being a pro and someone tossing you a vintage DJ bike to ride... the GEO on that is dead! However, it can never be as bad as that recent intense rider shredding his tazer dj. Hands down the worst frame geo of any bike I have ever owned. what a POS.
  • 5 0
For riding DJ they'll probably just build him a custom frame. Hopefully that will result in them selling some DJ or 4x frames again.
  • 19 1
The "Geo is dead"? I live not fare from Yeti. We have several great DJ spots in and around Denver. Handful of guys still riding Yeti DJ bikes and the crush it and could probably out ride/jump 90% of Pinkbike comment sections. Street frames have changed a bit with super short rear ends, but and good DJ/4X bike is still a good DJ/4X. That Yeti DJ even has adjustable dropouts. Similar as will BMX bikes, pretty much same geo ranges as they have been for a while.
  • 15 1
DJ geo was figured out 15 years ago, and there's no need to "update" it.
  • 6 0
Did jumps evolved their geometry too?
  • 2 0
they do have a full inhouse frame shop for proto typing. it could be a full one off custom or it is a test mule that is painted to match the old one so no one has any idea that they are working on things
  • 1 0
A little extreme to say the geo is dead. Not quite as responsive as a lot of modern dj bikes but not that far off. Probably closer to some of the slopestyle bikes, maybe not a bad thing for someone who hits bigger, more slopestyle type of lines.
  • 2 0

 Marzocchi getting more riders..thats sick.
  • 3 0
It would seem that other than the top tier race athletes and what not they are all moving to marzo.

I'd wager this is a move by fox to continue supporting all their riders but unless they need all the bells and whistles they just have em on the marzo "budget" platforms. Help boost sales and what not
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: They're probably top end forks on the inside, though. Marzo lowers, but essentially a fox otherwise, I'd guess.
  • 1 0
@groghunter: Possibly. Two that I know are just running standard Marzos with the turn dial Grip 1 dampers in them.
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: interesting. I'm sure they have access to custom tuning. I wonder if they know something we don't. I could see the grip 1 damper having less seals, and therefore less stiction.
  • 1 0
@groghunter: I will quote one of them for you "I'd pay my sponsor to get rid of the sweep dial if I could, less dials the better"

A lot of pros are waaaay less fussy than all us keyboard warriors.... Lol
  • 1 0
I heard the bomber 58s have thicker stanchion tubes and beefier lowers making them heavier then than 40 thus a lower price point but better suited for freeride and big hits.
