Registration Opens for Whistler Enduro World Series Stop

Riders signing on for 2015 will need all the energy of the Crankworx crowds to take on Whistler’s rooty forest single-track and scree-marred alpine; however, the organizers are prepared to concede it will not be the “Crankzilla” of 2014, as athletes notoriously dubbed this race.

Certainly, the 2014 enduro found the limits. Maybe we even went too far, but with the world-class riding we have here in Whistler, the raucous crowds of Crankworx, and the biggest prize purse in the Enduro World Series, we do expect racers to earn it,” says Darren Kinnaird, Crankworx World Tour manager. “This isn’t going to be your grandma’s enduro race.”

So far, Crankworx offers the only live broadcast of the EWS and the Whistler event will once again be broadcast, as will the upcoming Giant Toa Enduro in Rotorua.

The EWS has seen exponential growth in its third season with a record number of factory teams signing on and race registrations consistently selling out in under three minutes. All of the top 20 men and top 10 women from last season have registered to ride in Whistler, with the exception of New Zealand’s Rosara Joseph, who will retire from international racing after the Giant Toa Enduro at Crankworx Rotorua in March.

Among those to watch, hometown racer Jesse Melamed, 23, has committed to avenging a mechanical failure. Melamed won one of the Whistler stages in 2014 and appeared in contention to podium when an equipment malfunction sidelined his race. He finished top 25 in the EWS. Two-time defending champ Jared Graves will also return to seek another victory, as will Cecile Ravanel, who brought home her only EWS win on the Whistler course last year.

The SRAM Canadian Open Enduro presented by Specialized runs Sunday, August 9 and marks the sixth stop of the EWS. Sign up will be hosted through the Enduro World Series on Wednesday, February 4 at 9 a.m. PST

Not trying to nit-pick here but let's hope the "live broadcast" is a little more than a couple of boring straights and the finish line like last year. Show some of the awesome, rugged stuff!

Sorry, but you will likely need to tune in to World Cup DH racing to witness that type of racing.

ageed @classicmoto same w most of the races last year. A line you only saw 2 jumps a corner and a sprint to the finish.

Whisler wasn't all that gnarly last year.

What are the Vegas book makers odds on sell out time?

Under 2 minutes?

Have you been training your typing skills or your bike skills? Knowing it's months away till the actual riding I've been focusing my training on speed typing and super fast mouse clicks.

less than 30sec is my guess....

It doesn't matter because they're all wasting their time. I'm already signed up and my manager is going to sign me up first thing (hired a small Asain possibly Mexican lookin' boy with an iPad for $10). The rest of you are scrambling to pay a whole lot of money to deep throat my dust. Enjoy but I wouldn't waste my money on that.

I'd guess less than 30 secs too, from the time my page showed a link, to the time the page read "unavailable" was less than 10 secs....

Got in. The registration racing is more stressful than the actual racing.

Hey EWS: Please open up more spots specifically for locals. Hit refresh for two minutes and race full by the time page loaded.
  • 2 0
 Ya, that was lame.
  • 2 0
I had exactly the same experience. Please open seperate spots for locals, I think we are not the only locals who would really like to take part in the race but did not get in because we are not f5 racers.

When I saw the trails they were riding and how many of them last year I couldn't believe it. There is a lot of chatter about toughening up by PB users but that was an almost impossibly difficult race in 30 degree temps. It was hot, dry and steep. This is one of the most physically challenging races in mountain biking. If you think it is easy go try it... It included trails that are very hard on a DH bike. These people are really hardcore even for attempting it, super fit if they even finish in time. I bet some of the racers drank 6 litres or more during the day on the hard stages..

  • 2 0
Honestly, I wanted to sign up BECAUSE it was going to be Crankzilla 2.0, I wanted a challenge, I know this isn't everyones opinion but I'm debating my options now....
  • 1 1
Dont worry its quite the challenge, I saw numerous pros turning around because they couldnt make their transfer time.
  • 1 0
Thats very interesting because the "toned down" event hasn't even happened yet....

 Please sharpen/bright these pics

The Enduro of Enduros! They really should stack up all finish points from ALL races at crankworx to find the TOP athlete from the entire event. This will encourage more people to race more events. I will probably race 5 or 6 events.
  • 3 0
They do, it's the king and queen of crankworx, you get points per event

I'm doing lots of high number reps on my F5 finger in anticipation for tomorrow Smile
