I met Rémy Métailler when we were living on the French Riviera. We pretty much started to ride DH together. At that time, he had never been riding anywhere else other than around Nice in France.

When I first got some camera gear he was always keen to go out and get some shots. A few years later everything has changed for him and he flew me over to Mexico, where he spent a few months this winter in order to document his winter training.

So at the end of February, I jumped on a plane that took me to Guadalajara, the second biggest city in Mexico (7 million people). It was a short trip with a busy planning schedule, but we managed to film a bit of everything.

This is pretty representative of a full week with Rémy Métailler:
- Some Enduro action in the Nevado de Colima : loose, dusty, and steep. One of the best trails in Mexico.
- Pump track in the middle of Guadalajara.
- XC with a view over the city. Guadalajara is pretty high (1700m of elevation) so pedalling up there is more effort than you would think.
- DH in Bugambilias: 3min30 of pedalling. Still looking for some grip up there, but you can't complain when it's so close from the city.
- Gym time...
- Motocross at the Nabo MX track. Rémy just started to ride a bit of moto last year, but I can tell he loves it. So many riders at the track on a Tuesday night...
- Security being an issue, we had to play it safe and avoid a few places and times to shoot. Still a great time.

Pump track in the middle of Guadalajara. Pretty cool to see a place like that and so many young riders getting some laps.

El Nabo MX track. Remy really loves riding his motorcycle. That was one of the best days of the week for sure.

The biking scene in Mexico has been growing really fast lately and Rémy would like to thank his Mexican sponsor www.mdhbikes.com for all of the support that he got from them the last few years.

oh please dont start this! we have enough of any freerider flick with kids saying omagawd he would win all the world cups!

same thoughts here. might have loved argentinien dust!

I mean, look at his current setup. Travel around the world riding bikes for fun and making baller edits. Honestly that sounds better than high pressure racing.
  • 12 0
Speed and style are sometimes mutually exclusive, although with the amount of training he's doing, he's looking to change that.

What I want to know is how he funds this lifestyle, while not racing? I needs to get me some of that.
  • 4 3
I would say he's way more suited for DH racing than Enduro and would love to see him compete in the UCI DH World Cup rather than EWS!
  • 5 0
@SlodownU: He's like a "free surfer". Sponsors pay guys to just travel, make films surfing awesome waves, etc. I suppose Hans Rey was the first to really do this with mountain biking.
  • 2 3
nice edit but i still think he is best in the whistler bike park

@westeast: I don't think so, not in the bike industry. World Cup guys (and gals) don't live like, this except for like the top 5. For making a bunch of free videos on the Internet?

@dougies: That's funny! I was there for that race spectating and I had no idea he was even racing that day, but I was only there for the race not the qualifiers. Well I never said he would win any WC's I just think he's better suited for DH rather than Enduro.

He's a good mate of mine, but he does not have EWS level, he don't like to pedal and that's a known fact..

It's too bad about all the security issues in Mexico. I'd love to ride there and explore. It just doesn't seem worth the risk.
Great video as always Rémy.

I live in México, specificly in Guadalajara. I've never had a single problem with insecurity or anything like that. It's definitely worth the trip bro, lot's of places to ride and explore!

The common fear amongst Americans are of the white skinned non spanish speaking ones. I'm sure it's fine if you have a dark tan and can speak spanish, otherwise i don't know how far i'd want to trek into the back country..

@chilakill: You are totally correct, this is the real point - you don't have to go to a big city; just like the US, the difference in safety between a place like LA and rural Utah is immense. @jbalpuesta that might be true for you, but I would think it may be different for people who are clearly tourists.
  • 2 0
@jbalpuesta: Cerro del cuatro would be a dangerous trail to ride in the night in guadalajara. No narcos, just cholos.

Security issues exist in the mind of rich French kids who grew up on the riviera and spend their summers in Canada. You probably don't have to worry.

 @chilakill: bien dicho!!!!!
If they didnt go to Tapalpa......the they have to come back, an amazaing little town up in the mountains with great DH trails.

Mexico is awesome, the mountains around Puebla Mexico are pretty awesome for epic mtb adventures and around Queretaro, just be careful not to cross into any marijuana fields or you may become someones bitch! Whip

Loads of riding options here near the Gulf coast and we've never run into any problems.

I still have lots of family in Guadalajara. Plus I just sold a bike to a guy who also lives there. Now this video. Someone is trying to tell me something.

Tulum, MX was one of the coolest places I've ever visited. Totally amazing people, city, geography, history, beaches, ruins, food, etc. I had no idea what to expect before I left, but no security issues at all, and felt totally comfortable and welcome the entire time.
  • 1 0
@oliv3r: In tulum do a search for "punta venado bike park" they are really trying.

@chilakill: Was in DF, Queretaro, Morelia, Bernal, San Joaquin summer 2013, best trip in my life! Gorditas y Mezcal, Viva Mexico Cabrones!

@WestwardHo: rich french kids ? Wow you seem pretty confident. Maybe if I waited 10 years to go to Whistler that s cause I could not afford before ? If I started to ride moto last year it can also be for that reason.. But smart comment.
  • 3 1
@dirtyrig: I have crossed the sierra in Oaxaca, Queretaro, Puebla, Estado de Mexico and other and never ran into any mota fields.
Mexico is as insecure or as safe as the rest of the world, it always dependes where you go..
You can come any time of the year and there is always rider eager to take you safe and beautiful places.

Thank you Remy for choosing our country and for the pictures and good advertising.

Saludos

@b1k35c13nt15t: whenever you want!! Remy also had a first time here, and after that he been coming back again and again!

Drop me a message when you plan to come and we can help you out!

@lalodh: I was just kidding around about the pot fields, even though I've actually always hoped to stumble over one! Cool I travel to Puebla and Queretaro for work and every time I go I rent a bike and go exploring single track and even though most of the time I'm ridding alone, I never felt unsafe. I love Mexico and whats not to like, its not as developed as the states, which gives it a certain charm, good ridding, great food and hot women! Drool
  • 1 3
@remymetailler: How old are you dude? I'm guessing those ten years you waited happened during the time you were living with your parents and going to school. Being a park rat in whistler is not cheap even if you're making sick edits bra. You're a great rider but don't act like you're not privileged. Mexico isn't nearly as sketchy as you make it out to be.
  • 8 1
@WestwardHo: but dude I wonder who you are to make statement like that ? I m 25, and got a business degree. On the sude of my studies I worked a student job and didn t bike much at the time. When I first moved to Canada I had a work visa and work to pay my Whistler holydays. Of course I am more priviliged than a kid born in Somalia or Nigeria. Just like you. Regarding to Mexico you will be surprised on how many people get kidnapped, bikes and stuff stolen, and people killed on the street. Obviously Mexico don't market it in order to minimize the loss of tourism, but I'm sure you smart enough to understand it.
It's too easy to assume I'm a rich kid cause where I'm frome. Working hard and being a rich kid are too very separate things. Can give you a class a money management and sponsorship whenever you want dude. I'll charge you a few hundred of dollars for it cause I need to pay out my rich life.
  • 2 1
@remymetailler: How many languages do you speak? You have lived on 2 continents and traveled to more. You have a degree, hot woman and you are doing what you love. Expect some hate. Especially from the aged "never-was" crowd.
Props on always putting out videos that make people want to ride.
  • 1 0
@remymetailler: keep doing whatever you're doing and f*ck all the jealous envious bitches. At the end it doesn't matter what anyone thinks, they'll never have the life experiences you're accumulating because they never had the balls to venture out into the world, money or no money it's all about being able to jump into the fire at will and you can't be taught that, you're either born that way or not.
  • 2 2
@remymetailler: I lived in Mexico for a year and have traveled all over that country. It's one of my favorite places on Earth. I also spent 2 years working in East Africa so I know a bit more than you about dangerous places. Please don't try and explain Mexico to me because you spent a week there.

Who am I? I'm 35 and I run a very successful business so I feel quite comfortable with the statements I'm making. I don't want to make this about me but I you should understand my experience. If you read my comments I'm mostly taking issue with your characterization of Mexico's danger which is something people exaggerate on a regular basis. If you're not involved with a cartel you will be fine. Anyway, keep up the good riding and appreciate the life you have.

Cheers.

@fuentes88: Looks like I need to go back. My first trip was in 2011 Smile

@WestwardHo: thanks for the advice. For the notice I have lived in Mexico more than 12 month together, dated a Mexican girl for a long time and met a tone of people from all social class. I have also travelled to other dangerous country. And went to quiet a few places in Mexico. Taxco, Mexico city, Valle de Bravo, Chihuahua, Puebla and many others.

Mexico has issues of security. It is a fact. You know it if you have lived there. Did I made a generalisation of it ? No. I just make a firm statement. There is security issues in Mexico. Did I lived in a private club for 12 months with 10 bodyguards ? Not at all. Did I have ever had issues ? no. Did I see security issues ? Yes a lot. A guy shot in the street, people getting kidnapped, people getting attaked after riding the local motocross track ? Yes I did see that. Not trying to make it look sketchier than it is. I hadn't give any details about it in order to keep the image of Mexico clean.

A 35 years old successful business man should not make a such an imature statement on video he sees on Pinkbike and let a public negative comment on someone he doesn't know at all.

Good luck on your business and personal life.
