Can pinkbike write an article about how these type of contests are judged? It's confusing.
  • 17 5
That'd be really good, but it's probably a case of who the judges are, what mood their in, what trucks they like, you get the picture, there's probably not a set formula
  • 7 2
fat fingers I meant to up vote , I'd like to see this article too

I believe there was an article about the judging like two years ago. Long story short, the judging is not logic in many ways and the basic message was:"The overall score depends on how clean the run was".

I also think that the judges should always be riders who have been participants in years past. And I'm not talking about guys who competed in 2000 or something.

A judging system based on general comparison would make everything a lot easier. For example, there are 8 jumps on the course. The rider who pulls the better trick on a feature gets one point, like rider A does a frontflip while rider B throws a backflip, so rider A gets 1 point. After adding up the points, there is either a winner or a tie, which could be decided on what the biggest trick was during the whole run. This system would actually make sense.

If you watched the livestream and/or the replay you'll hear the commentators say how it is judged. Amplitude, Fluidity, Difficulty and Style or something along those lines. Whole run scored out of 100, deductions made for foot dabs, crashes and general sloppiness... Hope this helped somewhat Smile
  • 5 3
@frilko do you really think they do not have a system like that?! I watched it. Judging was fine. Stop complaining.
  • 8 6
Yeah and apparently -20 points for slipping your pedals (straight from the judge's mouth) but apparently no points deducted if its not that noticeable or if you over/under rotate... whack judging but overall not a bad event by any means. I've seen a lot worse but I found it hilarious this all happened after the judge stated they judge consistency but they also judge so people are willing to progress. Yeah, so many people are going to push themselves if the slightest bobble results in a 10 place difference...
  • 3 2
@scott-townes The pedal slip deduction only counts if your foot drags along the floor, if it slips off the pedal but it promptly returned to the pedal without it touching the floor they look past it Smile
  • 8 4
^ Even so, -20 points is friggen idiotic.
  • 2 1
@jiimmm4 yeah i watched the livestream and got the explanation but watching riders go down and being scored, it doesn't make much sense. One other question is what qualifies a person to become a judge. Slopestyle is a relatively new sport so not sure if the judges were even slopestyle riders and understood. One thing was common about the judges though - BEARDS. Beards make you a judge that is for sure.

I really think they need to stop rewarding opp tricks so highly, instead of been made to pull better more impressive tricks there just going the other way, which doesn't progress the sport in my opinion.
  • 2 0
The judges stated their criteria before the competition. That's all that matters. All of the riders knew that pedal slips we're going to be a huge consequence. If you can't land the trick, don't do it. I think the top 10 were legit. Definately showcases the most skill and professionalism.
  • 3 1
Being a judge sucks. Take it easy fellas.
  • 5 0
@TheFlyingYorkshiremen I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that you have never done tricks regulat let alone opposite. The level of difficulty involved is insane, it goes against all of your instincts. Just imagine going off a jump with your opposite foot forward, that shit is scary enough. Also oppo tricks lead to progression, google Sam Pilgrim windshield wiper, tell me that isn't an 'impressive' trick.

flag TheFlyingYorkshiremen (Jul 12, 2015 at 6:34) (Below Threshold)
Did I say it wasn't hard? I'm just saying people instead of doing bigger and more impressive tricks (which would attract more people to the sport and would mean more money for all involved) they are doing tricks the other way, which to the casual observer probably won't attract you to the sport.
  • 1 0
I agree...I'd like to know. Ya we all heard the description of how it's done, but let's see it played out during a run by the judges. I heard the explanation out of his mouth too ya. But pick a run, let the guy wait at the bottom, and take us on the journey. Because without that...We...are getting robbed.
  • 5 0
Its mostly based on what rider they want to win each year.
  • 70 3
lame judging!!!! in bmx world slipping pedals means a 2 points loss. MTB ss is on the same sick level and we still cut 20 points. And also no trick jump means you're out of the competition, but on the other hand an xup is good enough to keep you in. This is ridiculous !!!!!

Its a diamond event the level of riding should be insane
  • 46 5
Docking so many points for a slipped pedal keeps the trick level down because riders will perform easier tricks in order to land smooth.
  • 31 1
no kidding vansteenbergens run was sick its like doing a strait air or one small trick on a big jump takes 25 off your score. he got like a 50 and a 55 never crashed or a big slip but front flips the start drop!
  • 7 0
 as well a genoveses' run.
  • 6 0
Chubey first run score is too much.
  • 2 2
chyu- he was the very first to go if I'm not mistaken. You can't say one way or another after the fact because they had absolutely nothing to compare that run to.
  • 1 0
scott - i thought the judges have a guideline already. Especially a no trick on a feature.
  • 1 0
^ I'm not writing they don't have guidelines. My point is that the judges will compare a run to other peoples' runs to help determine which score is needed and you can't do that with the first person to go. Its very common for the first run to be scored a little strangely because they don't have that perspective. For example, if the first person lays down an insane run, it most likely will be underscored because the judges don't want to have a situation where if everyone else is also laying down better, banger runs, that everyone will be awarded 95s-96s, etc.

i'm sure, logan peat on the podium at joyride! and congrats to rheeder, this boy is on fire!
  • 21 2
 Pilgrim in 5th! Nice work!
  • 19 3
despite the controversial judging method. Kudos on the commenting by Cam and Tristan. Feels like Rob and Nigel combo. And the lady at bottom doing great too.
  • 3 1
agreed. way better then in years past.
  • 7 0
Cam was great. Tristan was just annoying
  • 2 0
 from top to bottom
  • 1 0
I'm with Snozz. There were bits where I couldn't figure out if Tristan was being serious or taking the piss, But I suspect he was being all serious... "720 is so hot right now....!" ... Zoolander anyone?
  • 5 0
cam and that other guy were waaaaay better than ryan meyer and the dumbass every could hope to be.
  • 1 0
one more time you guys complain about Tristan, I'm gonna write to Crankworx to bring back "shut the front door". haha
  • 19 2
Stoked for Rheeder, he deserves it
  • 28 15
So disappointing to see Rheeder win when we can see that Semenuk was throwing way bigger tricks... if Semenuk could just land that 360 barspin to tailwhip on the last trick jump he would have won for sure but props to Rheeder anyway for constancy!
  • 19 8
that may be your opinion but it is wrong. brett- flip in, brandon - flip in = even. brett- flip whip, brandon- 3 whip. = relatively even. brett- dub truck, brandon- sloppy switch truck. = brett. brett- switch 450, brandon- switch whip. = even. brett- fronty bar, brandon - flip double whip. = brandon. brett- switch whip, brandon- flip. =brett. brett- cork sev, brandon- cork sev. = even. brett- flip bar, brandon- flip bar = even. brett- whip in truck out, brandon- whip in truck out. = even. brett- flip b to tuck, brandon- tuck to whip to foot slip. = brett. brett- flip switch whip, brandon flip whip. = brett.

Brett wins.
  • 7 1
Semenuk was sloppy... normally his style is on point, but the last two diamond events he just couldn't pull it together.
  • 7 3
lol an opinion can't be wrong.. but either way that pedal slip cost brandon any sort of real chance based on the judging, if he didnt slip up id be interested to see where his score wouldve been
  • 3 1
Maybe Rheeder's run was better but a 4 point difference seems a little too much to me. Semenuk should have at least scored in the 90s. Also there is more to it than just comparing it trick to trick braden-schleith
  • 3 0
Semenuk had a few sloppy landings compared to Rheeder. Still don't know what gives with him piking at the end, yeah maybe he knew he was going to lose, but any other rider would have given it a shot regardless. Maybe it's his all or nothing attitude, but still, in the spirit of the event he should have gone for the last jump.... he's an amazing rider but I suspect he lost a bit of respect for that...
  • 2 2
 @ridethree

Brett also had more style and flow.
  • 1 0
@BobChicken he missed the bar on the switch truck out of whale tail, and the double truck out of the second whale tail. after missing the truck to whip, he must have known there was no chance of bettering his score or taking down brett.
  • 17 0
I want Logan to winnnn glad to see two Ontario born guys in the top 5
  • 15 0
 Granieri !!! what a tank!!!
  • 17 3
Gutted for Semenuk. Good luck at Whistler!
  • 13 0
I skipped right to the photos, i'm not much of a rheeder.
  • 16 4
 Semenuk always looks pissed
  • 14 0
It's his Ricky Bobby "if you ain't first you're last" face
  • 11 1
I think Semenuk is doing these contests because he has to for his sponsors... He doesn't look like he's having as much fun anymore... Maybe I'm reading too much into it though...
  • 8 0
I think that pissed look is intense focus.
  • 2 0
If he didnt want to do it i dont think his sponsors would care. He would still do videos. Just like when he took a year off couple years back. He is one of the more intense and serious riders for sure. Imagine the pressure he puts on himself.
  • 7 1
 resting bitch face?
  • 2 1
hokie- Or he's just an intense competitor. Not everyone needs to consistently have a smile on their face in order for them to generally enjoy that discipline. Or he could absolutely hate it and wants to flip double whip himself off a cliff.
  • 7 0
would also love to see a live, viewers vote, a kind of peoples champion and see how it compares to the judges choices - I know we dont have the abilities to know a persons oppo and maybe we may forgive a pedal slip, but still, would be nice to see how those watching would vote
  • 10 1
Rheeder on the Podium - Smiling.
Thomas Genon on the Podium - Smiling.
Semenuk on the Podium. - Not Smiling.

2/3 Ain't bad .
  • 4 0
Oh meatloaf. One of the best albums of all time.
  • 16 6
 Rogatkin got robbed!
  • 11 3
boy packs so much into his runs - he crashes often, but when he doesn't he gets downvoted for minor things. Must really bum him out coming from bmx
  • 5 1
He's gotta cut down on all those tailwhipe though. 11 tail whips in one run is definitely gonna be bad diversity wise. plus he's not the guy with the most sneeze either. But yeah he got bangers
  • 12 0
@lassemj he doesn't have the cold to get sneeze points
  • 4 1
Rogatkin's run was nothing to sneeze at
  • 2 0
 Damn you auto correct!
  • 2 2
He did 3 double tail whips, absolutely insane what features he chose to do them on, the small hip, whale tail step down and end step down. But the judges would definitely not have liked that in terms of variety, should have done some 360 combos tbh
  • 4 1
Rogatkin is a trick jump rider. Pulls big moves on mostly straight jumps. He doesn't stand a chance on the more technical features.
  • 9 0
So glad to see Sam back on form! Smile
  • 8 3
Rogatkin got screwed by the judges. Yes he slipped pedals but he did a triple whip. No one else was doing that. Totally should have been higher than 10th.
  • 8 2
The announcers did great job! Cam Mccaul is just the best!
  • 2 0
That is because he's a slopestyle rider like the rest of the competitors.
  • 1 0
Tristan was awful imho. Cam was great
  • 3 0
Finally slope style has a commentator that can call out the tricks better than the viewers.
  • 2 0
@Snozz: Tristan is a DH rider if I'm not mistaken but he's definitely better than last year's announcers.
  • 5 0
How about Yannick Granieri. He pulled out some crazy stuff and he's the oldest one out there. One of my favorite riders.
  • 4 0
Semenuk looks stressed right out. Should be stoked. Never a real winner in sports with judging. The tricks are taking the style out of it. Norbs got robbed.
  • 2 0
rheeder deserved it. it was way more cleaner than semenuk with huge tricks and combos compared to the jumps. its also ridiculous that no one can get them. its always who gets third spot wihch should be granieri in my opinion... he exploded! and rogatkin got robbed btw....
  • 6 1
 canadians are better sorry yall
  • 4 0
 Where is the replay?
  • 3 0
 redbull.tv
  • 3 1
Whoa how did Genon slip in there. I missed the end, I was hoping for a Canadian sweep. Now I have to see the replay.
  • 2 0
Gotta hand it to Sam Reynolds. Crashes out of his second run but gets up smiling and still stoked. A real pro.
  • 2 0
 24 and washed up.lol jking
  • 7 5
 judging was total bullshit
  • 2 1
Rogatkin was royally robbed with that score. Footslip and all his run was good enough for 4th or 5th.
  • 1 0
The look on Semenuk's face says it all
  • 1 0
 the aussie shoulda won mate
