Results: Greg Minnaar & Mille Johnset Win the Maribor iXS Downhill Cup 2021

Aug 5, 2021
by Ed Spratt
With the next round of the World Cup kicking off in Maribor next week and the European DH Championships on a similar course this weekend, some big names were getting between the tape for the midweek iXS Downhill Cup in Maribor.

Toby Meek came out on top in the U19 Men's racing, leading by over two seconds on Dennis Luffman and Remy Meier Smith. For the U19 Women, Phoebe Gale once again showed she could be the young rider to beat this season as she took the top spot by over five seconds.

Moving onto the Elite Women's race, Mille Johnset backed up her fourth-place finish in Les Gets with the fastest time today by a huge 19.713 seconds to Abigail Hogie. Fastest qualifier Vali Höll missed her race run today after a flat tire on the way to the start hut. Greg Minnaar dominated the Elite Men this week with a number one finish in qualifying and finals. Henry Kerr came closest to Minnaar, but he was still nearly three seconds off the winning pace.

I remeber back in the day riders like Tinker would somtimes carry a partially inflated tube in the back pocket of their shirt. She should try that.

Bummer, I guess we'll never know if she would have been able to make it through the last corner.

I know its "only" an IXS, but do the top guys and gals not still go with their normal WC setup, mechanic and turbo trainer at the start?

She is definitely jinxed this year. Need to reboot!

My question is how big is this damn puncture on the way to the start hut?! I Imagine the sealant should do the job.

@domi-llama: She talked about the incident in her instagram stories. After the flat, she was told by the IXS guys that she could simply start after the junior men.
Then afterwards, the UCI said this ain't possible so she was not able to start.

@Lemmyschild: In this day and age, they should just carry a spare wheel in the back pocket of their jersey. Wink

On her IG Story she said she got a bad vibe and is saving it for Maribor. What's the big deal?

@AyJayDoubleyou: yes generally they do. There have been some Instagram stories from the Rockshox Trek team and they seem to have their full pit setup

Tubeless? Seems odd. I know she struggles with big gaps which is a shame. Hope she gets the confidence as looks like everyone is throwing gaps on their tracks now. Don't know how I feel about gaps myself tbh. As someone who rides blacks and but doesn't like them either. I mean, they probably look flashy to a layman but they also put riders at risk.

@domi-llama: The Maribor start hut is half way down the mountain. You have to ride down on trails with some nasty sharp and hidden rocks.

@drmantistobogganmd: She actually sends the gaps. She crashed once in the mud and f'd herself up but sent it next time. She will be back on form before you know it.

@drmantistobogganmd: racing is about pushing your limits, otherwise it would be called riding.

@Bomadics: Exactly. Sometimes you don't know what you can actually do until you are forced to by pride, peer pressure, spectators, or avoidance of the arrow on course pointing to "Chicken Line". Teaches you to send it. I am too lazy to progress much without a nudge.....

It´s funny, when I was kid, there was a guy called Greg Minnar winning races too. Would this one be the son of that other gay?

 Congrats to Mille! Well deserved.

"Fastest qualifier Vali Höll missed her race run today after a flat tire on the way to the start hut" - A puncture on track -fair play. A puncture before you have even raced is a bit harsh!

 He's still "goat" it!

Poor Vali can’t get a break.
  • 6 1
If she didn't have bad luck she would have no luck at all this year
  • 4 0
I wonder what Vali’s qualies time was like?
