Results: Qualifying - Lenzerheide World Cup DH 2019

Aug 9, 2019
by Ed Spratt
The future is sideways... flying with Vali Holl.

The results are in from Qualifying at Lenzerheide. In the Elite Men, Danny Hart would set the fastest time of the day beating out current series leader Loic Bruni by only 0.106 seconds. Coming in third Troy Brosnan was less than a second off the top time and he will be looking for redemption after his worst result of the season last weekend. Greg Minnaar and Amaury Pierron completed the top five and were the only other riders to come within two seconds of Danny Hart.

For the Elite Women Tracey Hannah was back at the top setting the fastest time by nearly two seconds. Nina Hoffmann is back up to speed and finished qualifying in second position and Marine Cabirou didn't have the best time today but she will be looking for more tomorrow. Veronika Widmann and Emilie Siegenthaler came across the line around eight and a half seconds back to complete the five fastest women. Vali Höll and Thibaut Daprela took the top spots once again in the Juniors and proved their prowess after taking large amounts of time from their competitors.

I really hope Nina Hoffmann can keep it together for finals. If not: Experience builds up no matter what, I expect a world cup win from her next year! And can Tracey find the sweet spot between riding for the overall points and payback to Marine? Will be a hot race!
  • 11 5
What do you mean by "payback to marine"?
  • 17 2
@robwhynot: I think he just means Marine giving her a good beating in Andorra.
  • 12 2
@robwhynot: Tracey is competitive, ambitious and smart. After Myriam, Rachel and Tahnee were out, it looked like she would win the overall without too much effort. That neither is the way she wants to win nor a pushing position. Then came Marine, super strong. After Andorra, Les Gets and Val di Sole Tracey obviously wasn't satisfied with her runs *although* she won onece, although the overall points came and although 2nd in VdS was her best there ever. Why not satisfied then? Because she now feels under the gun from Marine and doesn't want to overtake her so quick, wants to show her the seniority she has. - Additional bummer: At world champs in Lenzerheide in 2018 Marine was 0.003s faster then her!

 @jamesurfer: val di sole*
  • 5 1
Here she comes: Practice Highlights with Eliot video was just released and Tracey said: "I'm angry, I'm hungry after last weekend!" Exciting times!

 @vandenr2: haha cheers :-)

Remember that the Women who are out this year should be back next year. Its great to seen a different top step in the womens race an more competition this year, but if others were not injured the positions and times would be different. (I think they would be anyway), that is assuming that the other women come back to the sport in anything like the form they were in in 2018.
  • 10 0
@betsie: Yes but it is racing, you don't need to only be fast but also consistent which means injury free. While Rach injury seems like a freak accident, one could also argue that this is due to over-training and to much pushing.
  • 16 0
@kerberos: Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't sure if something had happened between them that would lead to "payback" or if I had just misunderstood your point.

Ah, pinkbike community, where asking a question gets you neg propped.
  • 6 0
@robwhynot: I gave you my prop bro. You just be you.
  • 35 0
@kerberos: EVERYONE just so we are clear Tracey was ahead in points before Rachel had her injury. so remember these wins and this possible overall has by no means been handed to her! GO TRACEY!!!!!
  • 4 0
@rockchomper: But that's my point! She of course was motivated by the rivalry!
  • 4 2
@rockchomper: ^^THIS! And as I mentioned in another thread, Trace took Marine to the woodshed at Leogang and at Ft. Bill, so she definitely has the pace to take the win. IMO, like almost any top rider, when Trace is confident, she can beat anybody. With that said, I think she's in somewhat uncharted waters, as she's being chased now (rather than chasing Rach, Pom Pom, Seagraves) and having to "manage" her race runs a little more than usual to ensure she wins the overall. But based on her recent comments, I think she'll come out guns blazing, as she's pissed at her VDS result and she probably has a big enough lead (another chunk of points for qualifying 1st today) where she can still win the overall barring a really crazy outcome (e.g. DNF and Marine wins).
  • 3 0
@jackalope: ya I also think she will be pushing hard knowing if she wins this one the pressure is off and she can do whatever she pleases at the last race! correct me if i'm wrong but this will be her first world cup overall? if so she really deserves it as shes been racing for so long!
  • 5 0
@rockchomper: Yeah, this would be her first overall, and if she could somehow win Worlds, it would be a fitting cap to an amazing season, especially in light of her crash at Worlds 2 years ago, when she was going to win big in front of the home crowd. Really pulling hard for her, but I also really love seeing Marine and Nina take huge steps this year. Next season is gonna be a banger for sure with a lot of competition to get on the podium.
  • 5 0
@rockchomper: would be great to see Hart take one and Minnar keeps slaying it.
  • 3 1
@jackalope: But suddenly a out of the blue a new contender arrives...... Vali Hoell !!! hahahaha those girls better watch out for her! I cant wait to see how that plays out next year! but yes its super rad to see the ladies field becoming more competitive!
  • 1 0
She's never done well at vds. Not sure it's a payback situation lol
  • 1 0
@Balgaroth: it was mainly the bike testing. She had issues non stop with gt until they got that bike running on lol
  • 1 0
@rockchomper: I'm a big Vali fan, but her times aren't usually top 5 Elite yet when all the regulars are healthy.
  • 3 0
@jackalope: this is getting interesting, what happened in the woodsheds...
  • 3 0
@ColquhounerHooner: Dunno for sure, but maybe we can check for some POV footage.
  • 1 0
@endlessblockades: they aren't always but if i recall a few races ago she would have taken 1st place had she been racing elite. So the pressure of stepping up into the elites i think she has what it takes.
  • 1 0
@ColquhounerHooner: I've never been back there. Someone please share details.
  • 3 1
@robwhynot: Tracey pretty much got her ass handed to her by Marine. She may have been riding conservative for the overall, but she took a proper beating...
  • 2 0
@NinetySixBikes: She was holding back riding safe. She said exactly that in her post race interview. She's going for the overall. Not trying to take anything away from Marine she has been on really good pace & consistent all season.
  • 1 2
@NinetySixBikes: it would have been stupid for her not to ride wisley and throw away the overall. its not getting whopped on if your not trying.
  • 1 1
@m1dg3t: Like I said: she was riding conservative for the overall. Sorry to have offended anybody, I will take note.
  • 1 1
@rockchomper: Like I said: she was riding conservative for the overall. Sorry to have offended anybody, I will take note.
  • 3 0
@NinetySixBikes: not offended i just wouldn't consider 2nd place getting your butt handed to you. especially knowing she was being conservative
  • 1 4
@NinetySixBikes: LoL You think I'm offended by your comment, seriously? Maybe something got lost in translation due to language differences, but if you offended me you'd know it. Believe me.

Why do you feel guilty? LoL

flag jclnv (Aug 9, 2019 at 7:26) (Below Threshold)
@thewho07: English. British is a political slur.

Hart would have won the last race if he hadn't flatted. And if the tracks were steep and wet I honestly don't think anyone would stand a chance against him. He's by far the most comfortable rider on a sliding bike that's ever raced. He's like Marc Marquez. Watch his Val Di Sole run and there's a couple times where his bike totally looses grip at Mach 10 and he doesn't adjust, freeze, brake or anything. It's pretty nuts.
  • 19 1
@jclnv: The times don't show Hart winning even if he didn't flat. Even Hart himself admits as much in his interview with Cathro. Greenland had a burner of a run and there was no one last week that was going to beat that time. Laurie deserves all the credit for that amazing run at that brutal track.
  • 2 0
 come one Danny sooooooon!
  • 3 1
@Lotusoperandi: Fair enough. Greenland's run was great.
  • 6 0
@Balgaroth: all joking aside, i take nothing away from you guys and personally i'm loving the french onslaught that is happening right now (even though i'm probably not meant to say that). Loris, Loic and Amaury are three fantastic ambassadors for the sport and for you country.

  • 1 0
@Balgaroth: sadly not my friend. we chose to keep our currency, you did not. you can have marxist overlord credits (since i doubt francs are any use these days.)
  • 1 0
@tobiusmaximum: Francs are only used in Switzerland funny enough. But your vision is very "I am living on an isolated piece of rock", I leave near German border and often go to Belgium, Austria or Italy and the journey is flawless and easy which is great. I remember how much of a pain in the ass it was only to go to Belfast for the day when I was living in Dublin. Now the problem with our politics and gouvernements having to take loans to private banks instead of using national bank like it was the case is shite but that's because our politicians are morons really.

 David Trummer is a beast!
  • 14 0
I'd be very surprised if there is not big changes for him at the end of the season. I'm glad to finally see a Austrian rider shine considering how many bike parks they have it was about time. Maybe he will also inspire some German riders to wake up. Considering they represent 50% of our local bike park entries I continuously scratch my head when I don't see German do well in DH racing.
  • 15 1
@Balgaroth: We have lot of bikeparks but outside the parks and bike friendly areas MTBers are hate to be seen- everybody hates cyclist.. from hikers, car drivers, forersters and politicans.
In all other countries cyclist arent seen as parasist (okay maybe excluding some parts of Germany(

I would suggest to not go visit Austria for MTBing- Go to Switzerland or Slovenia.
  • 2 0
@Balgaroth: following this logic, I would expect many top Swiss results. As a Swiss I am amazed and somehow ashamed that we have not more riders scoring well in DH.
  • 8 0
@powpowpow: Because Switzerland has more of an XC biking culture. Austria is too busy pushing alpine ski racing and there's no time for juniors to develop in other sports. I know way too many Austrians who found mountain bike racing (especially DH) too late in life to seriously consider it a career path because skiing was all they were shown/taught growing up.

 @NotNamed: true.....

Yelled at by the Wirt at Plumsjoch for even dare to ride there.

A few designated places that you'll see in the tourist brochures and bike mags (Sölden, Saalbach, Lermoos), but the reality is that you're technically not allowed to ride on anything other than fire roads and even then you're on dodgy ground.

Even Bavaria is more accommodating than Tirol.
  • 1 0
@NotNamed: I think you forgot us, neighbour. To be honest, I can see why this happened at some point due to many riders being huge ***** as teenagers. I feel it is getting better though in public eyes. Excluding foresters and politicians...
  • 1 0
@NotNamed: a unpleasant picture you paint
  • 1 0
@maroski: My Bad, sorry. I should have Said to go every country around Austria but (for your better self) not to Austria.

And yeah- your trails rock.
  • 1 0
@jay-me: Yeah, sadly literally all high politicans go hunting themself are really "old minded" regarding the use of the Forrest etc

Also Forersters etc. have the same rights to "arrest" you than policemen here- its insane.
  • 1 0
@NotNamed: No shortage of people who hate cyclists here in the UK too. My favourite are the dog walkers who let their animals run amok, then scowl at you when you have the audacity to ride past at walking pace.

Atherton Racing's Inst post says she "missed out on seeding points after a crash, but nothing broken" I took that at the time as a fall in quali and expected a DNF, must have been in morning practice.

Yeah, her Twitter shows a hospital trip. Again saying nothing broken. Hope she is fit and back soon. Gutted for her as she must of been feeling good after her win.

 @filwhip: Brendog?
Was looking great after timed practice ????
  • 3 0
@jbeanbuyer: Yep. And Brendog's done well there in the past. Add to the fact, he was pushing hard to make the World's team. He was my dark horse pick for the weekend. Hoping the rest of my team can make up the difference.
  • 1 0
@adrock-whistler: Same. I'm sitting 2nd overall right now and dropped JVK for Brendog. Hoping the rest of my team pulls through - got a 151pt gap to third place. Too stressful haha.
  • 2 0
@davzx: that's a huge gap. Even without brendog you might stay at the top. And who knows what the leader had decided on. Hard call swapping out JVK though!
  • 1 0
The secret for consisten points is not making too many changes.
  • 2 0
@davzx: Made the same move, swapping JVK for Brendog. However I'm merely battling it out for 785th place. Haha.

  • 1 0
@n1ck: Yep. To rub salt in the wounds the riders I swapped out were Brosnan and Trummer
  • 1 0
@jibb: it hasn't worked out this time but it's probably not a bad idea to try that strategically. Most people have trummer and brosnan. If your selection had paid off then you'd have a big advantage over the average person. You gotta risk it for the biscuit.
