Results: Qualifying - Vallnord World Cup DH 2019

Jul 5, 2019
by Ed Spratt
Thibaut Daprela had a scare last week when his bike got stolen here in Andorra but thankfully it was recovered.

The qualifying results are in from Andorra after some exciting racing. In the Elite Men's Loic Bruni came out on top just beating series leader Troy Brosnan by 0.010. Third place would go to Amaury Pierron who will be looking to add to his win in Fort William tomorrow. Yesterdays fastest in timed training Loris Vergier had to settle for fourth position when he crossed the line just over four seconds back. The Austrian national champ David Trummer is having an amazing 2019 season so far and today's fifth-place proves he can keep up with the best once again.

The Elite Women's results saw an amazing result from Nina Hoffmann who got her first ever top qualifying results at a World Cup. She will surely be picked up by a factory team for next season with her great performance so far this season. Second place went to Marine Cabirou who was green at every split until the finish line where she went over a half a second back. Rachel Atherton didn't have a great run and would have to accept third going into finals tomorrow. Nearly thirteen seconds back Emilie Siegenthaler saw herself back in the top five and Veronika Widmann would be right behind her.

In the Juniors, Thibaut Daprela dominated the field taking a time that would have placed him seventh in the Elite Men. It was back to the usual result in the Women's too with Vali Holl recovered from her shoulder injury and getting another top qualifying result.

  • + 9
He's pretty much no more "unknown"... Wink
  • + 48
UPS to 5th. David Trummer: +4.710 [Privateer]
  • + 2
 @cool3: italian beast Big Grin
  • + 0
 @cool3: never heard of him
  • + 1
 @jlague: That IS impressive.
  • + 8
@jlague: He is part of Team Racing Dudes and my company sponsors them as does MRC Trading but he has worked his ass off this year and it is so good to see him doing so well Smile
  • + 1
 @Zack38: He is Austrian Smile
  • + 1
 @Mirks: denim destroyer is.
  • + 9
Wynn starts a privateer prize and BOOM 2 privateers in top 10.
  • + 8
It's time for Levi's to sponsor him.
  • + 2
@Mirks: all german speaking people from south tyrol are austrians, aren‘t they? It feeds the love hate relationship between them and the ‚real‘ italians so nicely ????
  • + 1
@vhdh666: I don't know I am Canadian I just know that Dave Trummer is the Austrian National Champ not sure about the denim destroyer
  • + 2
@Mirks: he‘s from south tyrol. That’s north italy. That used to be part of austria. That‘s why they speak german - with a beautiful accent. The north of italy is where the economynis okay. The people of south tyrol are, by some, not considered as italians. That‘s why there‘s this beautiful love hate relationship ????

Nina is killing it! Let's get her on a factory team and see what she can do!
  • + 35
Let's get more factory teams with an Elite Women racer for sure!
  • + 6
 Syndicate it seems
  • + 4
@barzaka: I agree. Seems like she is getting some support from them already.
  • + 48
If Kathy Sessler hasn't given Nina Hoffmann a contract for 2020 yet, she should do so pretty quick. Before someone else does it.
  • + 31
Privateers are killing it! Johannes von Klebelsburg and David Trummer are an inspiration to us all...
  • + 27
 and hoffman of course...
  • + 1
And Wyn isn't going to this race, so will the privateer award be happening again this weekend?
  • + 25
Nina Hoffmann in first, Johannes von Klebelsberg in ninth. A good day in the office for the first two privateer award recipients. Also, David Trummer seems to be on it.
  • + 1
Very exciting results that tease an even more exciting race to come!
  • + 10
It's almost like paying privateers gets results ...
  • + 22
KAPOW! The Unknown Denim Destroyer strikes again!
  • + 13
And beats Greg Minnaar, Aaron Gwin and Luca Shaw too! Insane...
  • + 5
I hope he remembered to order the vegetable for the week. They're having a soup special.
  • + 3
I’m sure he’ll have his phone in him…
  • + 7
@phdotd: only if he has a very bad crash
  • + 1
 @phdotd: I hope not Smile
  • + 19
Looks like we have a proper race on for the women this weekend, good to see new names up there on the top few spots. What happened to Tracy, hope she isn;t injured?
  • + 11
Looks like a crash or a puncture, she was fastest by 1.8 at split 3
  • + 2
@jamessmurthwaite: was she able to finish?
  • + 6
@jamessmurthwaite: I wish that Quali was live streamed so we could see exactly who happens!
  • + 3
@russthedog: She did finish, but a good 20 odd seconds back, P13
  • + 1
The ladies race seems moot if Carina Cappelari can time travel like she briefly did in her quali run...1:53 at the 1st split, and 1:48 at the 2nd split. Thats pretty quick!
  • + 1
@jackalope: does anyone knows what happens if a protected rider doesnt start at qualis?can he still start?
  • + 5
@Dat-PandaDH: AFAIK you have to at least be in the startgate at qualis and this will enable you to start in the race even if you DNF. But if you have a DNS in qualis like Tahnee, you are not allowed to start even if you are prequalified.
  • + 21
That time from Thibaut Daprela is ridiculous!
  • + 8
i mean he's in the commencal VALLNORD team, what did u expect ? tup
  • + 6
he would be 7th in Elites!
  • + 12
Pinkbike is my #1 mtb site, except for checking results. VitalMTB doesn't use SCRIBD, so I can read the full results and it doesn't lock up my phone's browser. Yes, I've tried the app too. I'm taking the path of least resistance, results are two taps away on VitalMTB.
  • + 3
I don't understand the scribd hate. Has always worked perfectly for me
  • + 15
Safe to say the intense DH bike isn't working for Neko and Gwin and Jack?
  • + 6
Tough to say....they definitely don't seen to be quite there with everyone else. Jack was fast on it last year but then again it had RockShox, Maxxis and Sram brakes. There are a few variables that could be making things tough for the guys. It's tough for me to think that the kenda tires are anywhere near as good as the maxxis stuff.
  • + 6
gwin injured his index finger in the morning before quali according to his IG. 14th with an sausage like index finger (his words) for breaking seems pretty good, tough year for now.
  • + 9
Intense frame + new components = on floor in fetal position making dying porpoise noises. All three riders are wildly underperforming with Shark Attack in particular having fallen off like he just paddled off the edge of Kyrie Irving’s flat earth.
  • + 5
@fullboredunn: Not sure exactly why, but that made me laugh my ass off
  • + 1
@fullboredunn: haha yes but the platform supa competitive across wheel size re EWS last week and all last year. And prior Sharky and Dean did well, had good results, more uniform and possible flexible programs. This is so the culture vs platform in these supa competitive and changing times, bit over product experimentation (only one rider should be), and enforced change as part of the New Intense program. And all the while the expectations gather, and then build again. Lot of coin here. Watch this space. And a dude in jeans striding on aint setting perception of results v approach. Shame all riders went into season such a good base. Global symptoms and consumer rider uptake will play out here. Saturated markets and all.
  • + 2
Injuries, frame, components, 29er? Hopefully they'll figure it out soon
  • + 1
 @gonzoracing: username checks out
  • + 14
Unreal times by Bruni and Brosnan!!
  • + 4
Believe they are both looking for the points, things bring as tigh as they are. ;-)

  • + 7
Oh wow, Junior women is gonna be interessting with Anna being on exactly the same pace as Vali until split 3 being only 0.004 behind.
  • + 5
Would like to see all categories live streamed or at least in replay available. There's some serious action going on there too!
  • + 6
What happened with Jure zabjek??!!? Who's got the inside scoop? He had a DNS. He's been on fire this year it would suck if he got injured again.
  • + 1
 heard he got injured...
  • + 3
Damn, best wishes to him recovering, having a break-out season and riding so well on the Devinci... and yes I have him on my Fantasy team but more important to wish him well and hope he isn't hurt and can continue strong.
  • + 7
I really hope Johannes "The Denim Destroyer" Von Klebelsberg continues to rock the casual look on race day...
  • + 7
Denim Destroyer you're an animal !!!!!!!!!!
  • + 6
Does that mean Bruni is now leading the overall?? (for 0.01 sec ahah???)
  • + 4
I'm gutted for Troy. Always stupidly close every time. But not quite. I hope his girlfriends dont tease him like that. Mr Consistent deserves the overall this year.
  • + 9
Note to Troy, coming second may be desirable in some situations, but not in a race.
  • - 2
Troy isn’t old enough for a girlfriend bruh!
  • + 1
Maybe consistency is his strength and pushing it isn't. I remember him pushing hard for the overall between him, Minnaar and Gwin in Val di Sole and it didn't really work for him... maybe he just has to overcome some demons like Bruni in past years while laying it all out
  • + 4
I want The Denim Destroyer on my Fantasy Team, how about a chance a privateer might get the win this weekend and when last did 2 privateers quality in the top 10!
  • + 6
I think the real Friday fails is Scribd
  • + 6
27.5 inch wheels 3.5 seconds faster. Love it.
  • - 7
flag jaydawg69 (Jul 5, 2019 at 7:59) (Below Threshold)
 would be faster on 29er....
  • + 11
Bruni is on a mullet bike
  • + 6
 @jaydawg69: But they thought otherwise.
  • + 5
Great to see Phil Atwill back in the mix come Sunday!
  • + 1
Is Phil Atwill doing CC now? Big Grin
  • + 5
Super bummed to see Neko missing the cut. : (
  • + 2
 Same, damn!
  • + 6
Whole intense team is off the pace it's strange as they are all super fast riders. Looks like the bike isn't great
  • + 4
Oh no Tracey... I hope she is alright, protected rider though!
  • + 5
 Finn got mechanical?
  • + 1
Is he going to be pre-qualified or the race weekend is over for him?
  • + 1
@eyjafjallajokull: he is a protected rider, for sure he will be racing tommorow, if he did not have severe crash
  • + 1
@eyjafjallajokull: btw he was second fastest on the first and second checkpoint and second in the timed training hopefully it was just mechanical ol small crash, so he would be able to perform tomorrow !
  • + 1
@Zack38: That's great! He went into trouble between splits 2-3, but managed to reach split 3, so most likely he tried to finish his run, but after split 3 his bike became unrideable. I think he's okay.
  • + 2
He crashed. I saw him roll down full of dirt with some tape caught on his handlebar
  • + 1
 @Clemounet: Oh, that's a pity.
  • + 2
@Clemounet: I hear he had a brake fail. Might be the cause of the crash.
  • + 2
Is it just me or is Gee Atherton way off the pace this year, 2018 he was a serious threat and now seems nowhere. Maybe the wise older guys saving it for finals. Here hoping.
  • + 0
No, I don't think so - he's just not on pace.
  • + 5
Rachel has been struggling too (compared to previous years), seems like their new bike isn't as competitive as they'd hoped
  • + 1
@src248: Or they don’t have as much available time for training and such because of doing the owning a bike company thing.
  • + 4
It's the year of the privateer, for sure!
  • + 5
 Let's go Bruce Klein!
  • + 1
Yeah, nice too see Bruce Klein with a good qualifying result.
  • + 0
Does he race with is phone because it has some software that interferes with the final time ,or he makes him vibrate and that relax him ,or could be something like they put on riders wheels and other parts of the bike to mitigate the vibrations, instead he uses is phone to try and duplicate that ,there must be something,TEAMS watch out
  • + 1
Might be a stupid question, but is the speed a speed trap on course, see the denim destroyer was second quickest with no1 way back outside the top 60
  • + 0
I don't see much of an advantage qualifying 1st. Perhaps you know where you stand and know what you have to do being able to see all the times. However, there is more pressure riding last.
  • + 5
 Advantage = Qualifying points
  • + 1
@gigamike: What's the amount and breakdown of the qualifying points?
  • + 1
 @tacklingdummy: 50 pts for top?
  • + 4
 Nina, way to go!
  • + 2
Seems like Bruni finally found the last piece of the puzzle. Happy for him!
  • + 3
Who's David Trummer? Priveteer? Fast thats for sure!
  • + 5
Austrian national champion if I'm correct! On a yt but more or less private now it seems. He was in a factory team few years ago
  • + 5
Not exactly a privateer, but on a very very small team called Racing Dudes. He was on Propain until 2018.
  • + 2
Not sure who he is, all I know is he's on my Fantasy team. Hope he does well in finals
  • + 1
See Trummer is an IXS Flyer, one to watch. Nice to have some new names up there. Are Gwin and Minnaar not risking anything in qualies or just off the pace?
  • + 2

  • + 3
 Finn DNF?

Come on Finn..get it together bro!

Glad he's having a better year. He's a silent assassin.
  • + 1
Is it raining now for the mens elites or something? Times seem... off?
  • + 2
Never mind, I'm guessing the dusty blown out conditions make for big time gaps. So different to last race...

 #RAdelaide.

 Daprela is unreal
  • + 1
 Link to live timing?
  • + 1
 Live timing is available here.
  • + 1
those links don't bring me to it. I always have trouble with this for some reason
  • + 3
yea im an idiot and didn't scroll down far enough. thanks guys
  • + 3
@edspratt: Does this page work for you? I just get a blank area below "LIVE TIMING AND RESULTS"
  • + 1
@rmalins: same for me. Maybe it's because I'm on a mobile device
  • + 1
@rmalins: For some reason it just takes a long time to appear.
  • + 2
@rmalins: It is working for me. That happens quite a lot if you wait long enough it normally loads in.
  • + 1
@LaXcarp: Yeah, you have to click on a few links to get there.

Here is a direct link that should work: prod.chronorace.be/angular/results.html#/uci/event/20190706_dh/DHI/ME/dh/2/res
  • + 1
@LaXcarp: no you’re not an idiot. It is the design of their site which is idiotic.
  • - 1
Heard it here first, Thibaut's time would equate to a top 15 in elite today.
  • + 3
 Even top 10...
  • + 1
 Bruni, Troy, Pierron...
  • + 1
 Finn Iles DNF??
  • + 1
