WHY AREN'T DH RACES BROADCAST ON MAJOR NETWORKS! Tennis and golf should be moved to ESPN Ocho.
  • 12 4
As a mountain biker, I totally agree. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure (this is an assumption, I do not work for ESPN) that the golf and tennis events get far more publicity and ad revenue, thanks to rich white folks! Wimbledon was on the TV at the bar the other night (come the f*ck on, tennis at a bar? BS, I know), and they had Rolex commercials and whatnot. Big money there, and to network executives, money talks.

Pick up a golf magazine, skip to the back with all the national event results (there's about 2-3 thousand of them every month... a conservative figure) and prepare to shit yourself as you see the last place finalists getting paid 10x more than winning DH World Champs. Money is the only reason golf is as popular as it is.

DH is a young person's sport which can only be practiced at what really amounts to "exotic" locations for most people. Golf is driven by the money generated from the interest of affluent people whose average age is above the retirement age of a pro DH racer. You can build a golf course in a desert. No-one retires and moves to a "DH mtn. bike community". How little racers get paid isn't nearly so puzzling as how expensive a good DH bike is priced, considering that the person buying it is invariably young and far from rich. You can buy a set of top of the line custom fitted clubs with bag and all the accessories (beer tap anyone) for less than what a carbon frame goes for.
