“…the Super Bowl of the mountain biking world.” Pinkbike’s
Event of the Year 2018. The season-defining conclusion of the Crankworx FMBA Slopestyle World Championship and the Triple Crown of Slopestyle. Bringing together over 25,000 fans on the ground, and millions more around the world, Red Bull Joyride is the biggest stage in the sport.
Steeped in 15+ years of tradition, this is the most challenging event on the circuit. Staged in the “Boneyard,” the dirt stadium at the base of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, Joyride offers the best slopestyle mountain bikers on the planet two runs – that’s two chances for glory, two opportunities to throw down high-scoring tricks and move up the leader board, and two moments in time to leave their mark on the history of the sport. The 14 best riders in the world bring their A-game to this invitational showcase, interpreting a brand new custom-built course and giving it their all.

It's a shame, but undoubtedly the right decision.
Just like Godziek decided not to do a real run, not feeling it and that's not the mindset to trick of these features. It sucks for us fans, but we are not the ones risking life changing injuries (and that is not hyperbole...).

I’m saying I’m pretty sure he won in 2017 which was the last whistler crankworx he attended
2016/7 (when BS stopped competing in events) he was the man to beat for sure and is an incredible rider with such a smooth style and still one of the best in to world for sure if he was to compete.
... but Rogatikin last year and Brett this year are on another level and with Emil now could we be seeing another level with Emil v Brett pushing the trick combos to another level.
BS last won in 2017 with a single triple move, now they judges are looking for quad moves for high scores which is insane.
I am pretty sure he would come top 5 also and could contend for a podium for sure.
But these guys don't turn up to come top 5
But we you can only come top5 if you are there on the day!
I could have been British Vets Dh champion this year... but I didn't enter... haha.
I mean, Max only has two years of injury and an arm that never will be right again, makes perfect sense to just take those extra risks for "fans" like Fatfingur who lurk behind the screen.
Not taking those extra risk is the best way to compete. Look at what happened to rogatkin in austria. That second crash could have been prevented if he just walked away and prepare for the 2nd run. Don't get me wrong. I'm always pumped seeing him stand and ride again after a crash, he's like that, always giving a good show for everyone. But I would rather see him brush it off and prepare for a 2nd run and maybe pulled off a banger of a run.
But beyond event/year/career... seen Soederstrom limp? Seen the nice curve in the arm of Fredrikson? The multiple concussions Mat Jones suffered within weeks in 2019? And these guys are under thirty...
I have zero respect for people who whine about these guys bailing if there's no need to take that risk. What claim do we have on these athletes?
