JUNIOR MEN - RESULTS

1st Martin Maes
2nd Laurie Greenland
3rd Alex Trillo

Quick Facts:
- Second place qualifier Jacob Dickson had trouble before the second split and was 15 seconds down, putting him out of the running.
- Martin Maes made over 4 seconds up between split 1 and the finish line. Clearly the Enduro rider's strength can't be contested.
- Laurie Greenland going into the hot seat brought down the amphitheatre, unfortunately he had to settle for second place.

I am very proud of that rider and also Blenki has reached a very good position¡¡¡¡

Minaar did amazingly for a privateer!

Minaar is still a Syndicate rider though ? @TrinityTest

Minaar => Silent Killer! Compared to the other riders such as Gwin, Ratboy, Gee, Brosnan, Hart, etc- he got almost zero coverage. Come finals - top step!

Also - congrats to Marcelo! Huge feat Smile

Yes VL. They just didn't put it in for some reason. On a different note and people can believe whatever they want, I don't care, but did anyone else cringe a bit when Gwins thing came up and his strength was "Father God"?

Oh yes , It might be because of a jersey design issue if i remember well , the UCI wouldn't consider them as a pro team or something like that .

After a few years of hating on enduro I have learned that it is not downhill but it is here to stay. I don't like it but a lot of MTB folks do so I will just let it be. Don't think the UCI should ever adopt it, but that may very well happen one day.

I saw that and thought it was either a joke or Gwinn had them put that as his strength. if the former is the case then it is a very unprofessional move on the organizers part. I don't agree with the whole God thing, but he has never hurt anyone with it. Gwinn has always been a Professional in the utmost sense and should be respected as such. He's not Tebow holding a sermon on the field (or in this case, track).
  • - 29
flag CaliCol (Jun 7, 2015 at 13:42) (Below Threshold)
For those of you not familiar with American football Tim Tebow was an American quarterback for the Denver Broncos who would praise God on camera and would hold candlelight vigils on the playing field (not literally, but I am sure if he was given the opportunity he would have).
  • + 13
Calicol Danny hart doesn't hurt anybody with the way he talks but we all make jokes about that, the funny thing Gwin does is talk about a magical sky fairy a lot. I don't see why we shouldn't make jokes about him, just because he thinks some middle aged man in the middle east is the center of the universe doesn't mean he should get more respect then anybody else.

Fair enough, it was funny, and gave people a chuckle. But, it's his belief and to make light of it on a worldwide broadcast (if it is the case that Aaron didn't request it) is unprofessional. So he goes on and on about God when he is interviewed, but he never tells anyone that he/she should believe in God.

If you believe something you can choose to take it seriously, other people not taking it seriously doesn't hurt him. New test announced after the final for riders, previous world champion Aaron Gwin tested positive for BELIEFS a substance little known by the UCI but one thats felt as an unfair advantage. Gwin faces continued controversy by the MTB world after he was heard saying "I'm powered by god". This was what sparked such an uproar from the community, calling for anti belief tests. Stay tuned for further updates.

  • + 3
its going to be REALLY interesting to see how many UCI WC riders are still using procore at the end of the season
  • - 2
I suspect them all tbh - I would assume they are under contract, getting a nice payment from Schwalbe, and not doing it for the benefit to their health (or results).
  • + 2
omg, one racer gets puncture and everybody talking about disaster lool
  • + 0
Junior its not that everyones flipping shit over a flat. Its Procore is supposed to get you down the hill if you flat. But 2 guys( Mulally and Heath) have already had total failures of the system which resulted in wheel implosions. Doesn't shed a good light on Procore.
  • - 1
Especially when guys are using Titanium bolts to shred a few grams here and there. 200 grams of useless weight on each tire is a big deal. I don't know the formula but for every added pound of rotational weight your brakes and acceleration are drastically compromised.
  • + 2
What a bunch of neanderthals on this site... Heath was the only DNF, how many riders do you think ran procore without a problem? Pinkbike is bizarre, you have people that resist things like Boost, 650b, and Procore harder than white South Africans resisted ending apartheid, then a prototype Ohlins fork shows up and these same people are shouting "I'M MORTGAGING MY HOUSE FOR ONE!" Do you all hate on mainstream tech because you think it makes you cool and edgy?

Santa Crua Syndicate, not a trade team... Well played Minnar, well played.
  • + 31
That was great. what an unreal legacy that syndicate team is. Even if they didn't have the most unbelievable success rate in the sport the attitude and sportsmanship of the team has always seemed a notch above. Always stoked to see a syndicate jersey on the steps.
  • + 1
What did he mean by that? Doesn't drop riders after on bad season?
  • + 15
UCI didn't think their jerseys met the rules, so they barred them from DH Trade Team status. (basically, they are "unsponsored")
  • + 31
 They are not "unsponsored".
They just don´t get the premium VIP treatment as a team, like easier registration, bigger pit space in a central position etc.
Things that make it easier for the riders and get the team more media coverage.

Great to see somebody speak up against all this UCI bullshit however.
I´m waiting for the UCI sanctions for this though. Don´t think the old men will let this just slip by so easily...
  • + 13
UCI is treating them as unsponsored, which is why they won't put "Santa Cruz Syndicate" under their names on the list. I agree with you though, glad they are speaking out against it.

They still racing in a UCI event despite the fact they hate their rulings so much they put a bitter comment on his jersey. Tbh, if they disagree so much, shouldn't participate in their events.
  • + 19
Yeah, of course. Now go ahead and quit your job the moment you disagree with any decision of your boss.
Makes sense, right?
They are not doing this for fun. It´s their jobs. And UCI pulling this stupid stunt basically affects their jobs. Of course they gonna protest and not boycott it. They have bills to pay like any of us!
  • - 1
Greg looked uneasy showing the decal...he must have been nervous or something. I hope that didnt take the joy of winning from him.
  • + 0
@Loki87 of course not quit your job, but you'll come with a new suit to work next day with a big "your decision, mr. boss, sucks!" sticker on it? Nope, so here's your answer why their comment is just childish. A mature form of protest would be to send in a well formulated, maybe open, letter.
  • + 4
Open letters are narcissism at its finest. Instead of confronting a person or organisation head on, you're just telling the world what you'd say if you were face to face (or maybe you wouldn't even have the guts to say it to their face...) with them. They're generally spread via social media and are done to garner likes, not to sort out issues.

I'd much rather see Syndicate go the route they are going. The rebel team angle is much better marketing for their team and their sponsors than some heart felt "please, I promise we'll change, we're sorry" pussy letter to an organisation that is more worried about matching tshirts than team spirit and the good vibes of DH racing.

#notatradecommenter
  • + 2
 @Rentaric:
That´s not what you suggested though. You said, they should basically quit their job out of protest. Now you´re suggesting they should just suck it up and play by rules they don´t even know (because that was the real issue here. The rules were not clear.).
And also, don´t you think they talked to officials about this? Of course they didn´t just accept a "No" and went on from their with protest. UCI basically slammed the door in their face and showed them the middle finger with a big "f*ck you!"
Again, that maybe is an option if you are the manager of a business (albeit a very very bad one), but not if you are a non profit organisation. The teams and athletes are basically customers to the UCI and they should act in their best interests. Which they did not.
What the syndicate does is what any labor union would do as a first step. Raise awareness. Gather supporters.
You can´t take them on on your own (without facing serious repercussions) and of course you need the support of costumers (which equals fans in this case) to not end up driving your business against the wall. They are creating sympathie, so if they ever decide to really boycot (of course that won´t happen, but anyways) the UCI race, fans will understand that decision and keep standing behind the team which results in the team still doing it´s job (marketing) by creating public awareness.
Maybe some day, some of the bigger teams will have enough of being screwed over by the UCI and somehow form their own Union. But for this to happen, they all need to know there are others out there willing to freely speak their mind.
The sticker is also there to show the UCI they don´t own the teams/athletes and remind them they are their to market and grow the sport, not hurt them. When athletes feel the need to speak up against their governing body there is something seriously wrong in the system. The UCI however is a organisation that seems to react only to massive pressure and not to arguments.

Claudio is great on the previews, but as a commentator he sounds like he is at a funeral!
  • + 34
 Bring back Nigel Page!

Nigel Page is great and obviously works well with Warner, but I think the Warner/Cunny duo has been the best in last few years. I love Claudio, but he doesn't quite have it for the colour commentary.

  • + 2
CG is painful as well - but in the opposite way. Just leave it to Nigel Page and Warner!

i bet she practiced in the head that fall, as she said it was a crazy jump for the women... good tumble, well taken and up again

Rachel just completely lost it. After being not up to her usual speed for quite a while, just look how emotional she got after realising she had finally won another race again. She has always been a strong supporter of the younger girls, especially Manon.

On another note. Manon is a f**cking beast. To get up and still podium after that crash...
  • + 1
Actually all three girls did walk up to check on her but Manon rode away...
  • + 1
To get up from that fall and get back on the bike to cross the line takes some serious mental strength - fair play to her.

To even *try* the jump in the first place puts her on another level of courage for me - it's one thing to take a scary jump that others are all clearing... to try a crazy jump that 99% of the other competitors skipped knowing you have a 50/50 of crashing, that's something else. /respect!
  • + 1
Manon's crash was crazy, I reckon she probably would have taken it if she didnt go down. That was a big jump sheesh! And the women definitely had the worst conditions - the ground got drier and drier down the bottom....and none of the women hit it did they?
  • + 1
Manon writes on fb: " Although I'd made it over the jump in practise and qualifying it was still a gamble that didn't pay off, and left me badly in need of a new helmet!! "
  • + 2
Definitely a huge gamble on her part. Probably one of the few sections where she knew she could gain 1-2 seconds on all the other ladies so for the finals she had to go for it. Just amazing courage by this young lady. I hope she's OK to go for the next round.

Everything Claudio said was from a negative angle, while Warner tries to pump everyone up. Usually they are so frantic that they talk over each other. Today it was just huge gaps. Pretty weak compared to the usual standards.

i found that you could hear the live commentary for the crowd while Warner and Claudio were commentating.. This kinda annoyed me as you could hear if the riders were up or down at split one and rob and claudio had only just started commentating the run :/
  • + 9
 Greg Minaar!!!!!!!!!
  • + 5
Gwin did an amazing run considering that the track condition was a bit worse than when Minaar was on his run! Stoked for Greg for winning it. Heal up soon, Sam! It's going to be a very interesting season ahead!!!
  • + 1
especially for missing practice! sounds like a serious mismanagement there....
  • + 9
 Ratboy DNS in finals?
  • - 3
correct as far as I can tell. He had a couple pretty wicked crashes in practice.
  • + 1
Shown as finishing 31st or so.
  • - 1
 thanks man...
  • + 1
He didn't look up to his usual pace I saw him near the top, he wasn't carrying speed like the rest of them to the extent he was having to put a couple of pedal strokes down in berms, etc
  • + 8
Anybody know what happened to Neko?
  • + 2
Looking at the splits, it looks like he had a crash or mishap between split 2 and 3.
  • + 7
Nice one Marcelo. You deserved it!
  • + 4
Anyone know what's up with the French junior Laly Thibault's speedtrap times? He was fastest overall in qualifications, and over 10kph faster than anyone in race runs, including the elites. How does that even happen!?
  • + 7
blenki up there again good work
  • + 3
Decent race not the most exciting but track conditions were savage,,, I really think we need to see live helmet cam footage aswell as trackside each race would make viewing so much better,,, I agree they need to get rid of the pedally section too slows the race down too much,!! Overall pretty sick tho considering the weather they have had up there!!
  • + 3
Why didn't they have more cameras in the wood section or maybe a better angle? I thought the overall coverage was pretty good but I thought it was funny how Warner was determining whether the riders fell in the wood section or not by how much mud they had on them "aww is that mud on his left arm? must have took a tumble".
  • + 8
 MINNAAR IS BACK ..... Smile
  • + 6
Stoked to see Blenki back in the top 5!
  • + 6
 MARCELO!!!! you are a badass
  • + 5
Oh, Blenki did pretty well and I wonder if it is because he did NOT pedal in the air...
  • + 6
so, did anyone guess that podium? Big Grin
  • + 3
I guessed the gwin part, that's about it haha
  • + 2
seven people had gutierrez on their podium, and no one guessed the whole podium well
  • + 1
 seems highly unlikely.
  • + 6
 Oh nooo manonnn
  • + 4
Manimal Maes.. Such a beast in that young age. Maybe Dan Brown should start considering him in the DH team too.
  • + 4
the roar of the crowd at the bottom of the track must be next level awesome.
  • + 3
Wow! Rachel Atherton, Emmeline Ragot crashes and as the 2nd and 3rd place go see if she's okay you go back up to the hot seat. Good sportsman ship.
  • + 3
Am I the only one worried about Greg Minnaar ripping off the race tape towards the end? I thought UCI would do something like cancelling his result.
  • + 6
Didn't seem to exit the course. His handlebars just touched the tape.
  • + 2
Yeah I noticed that but still so worried because who knows UCI won't do something mean on that or not.
  • + 2
he stayed inside the taped course with both wheels and did not gain any advantage. I think he is safe from UCI Smile
  • + 1
Great to know that. Thanks dude!
  • + 4
NO ONE is safe from the UCI!!!!!
  • + 5
 well done Loris Revelli !!!
  • + 5
WHY ISNT IT WORKING ON MY APPLE SHITPHONE!!!!!?????!!!!!

  • + 3
That girl Manon Carpenter`s got baaalls to attempt a jump like that!! That bloke MInnaar´s gota some skills to beat Gwin´s perfect run like that!
  • + 4
well there goes the chance fo the RockShox BoXXer WC Frown

Could anyone explain why Bruni has got "210 (1)" at Lourdes, finishing 2nd, while Gwin has got "200 (2)" at the same WC ? Is it just me or there is a mistake ?
Anyways, why do they give more points at Lourdes than at Fort William, for the same place ??
Again, I'm really confused by UCI system ! _ _'
  • + 6
Points are also given for quali. Gwin qualified low in Lourdes. Loic classified on top.
  • - 3
OK so this "210" correspond to his qualis + finals ranks. Then what about this "(1)" when Gwin has won ? (Unfortunately for France Razz ) Is it based on these points, not on the podium ?
  • + 3
Yup, number plates are based on UCI Overall standings.
  • - 2
 i thought UCI mandated gloves?
  • + 1
Nope, only some specific country cycle union do that (France for example if I remember correct)
  • + 1
Some countries, (France I think? And maybe some of the Nordic countries) mandate gloves. I don't think the UCI does overall though. I could be wrong, but I remember at some of the races last season the commentators stating that "Oh, here in France (or Hejdstadt or whatever) the countrie's governing body requires gloves.
  • + 0
Oh man, what a weekend for British cycling. Rachel mobbing on foos at Fort William on DH, Sir Wiggo mobbing on the hour record at the London velodrome & road national champion Kennaugh mobbing on foos to win stage 1 of the Dauphine.
  • + 4
Yasss Marcelo Gutierrez in 3rd place!! Awebo putos!!!
  • + 4
Wyn, just outside of the top 10. Nicely done.
  • + 4
Congratulations to Alex Marin!! Keep on it! Gas!!
  • + 3
Crystal ball says Wyn winning a round this year
  • - 3
 Nope, sorry
  • + 3
Anyone know what's happened to Neko Mulally?
  • + 2
Could this be the year of Gwin again? When this guy is on fire all hell breaks loose!!!
  • + 1
renno I totally agree. the uci site is annoying too, they show the results live, but the footage is with redbull who have delayed it an hour
  • + 1
yep i totally agree there djm35
  • + 2
Not good for female racing when two riders with big offs still make the podium.
  • + 1
Wait, how did Loic have the World Cup lead going into this round when Gwin won the first round? Are there points for placing in qualifiers as well?
  • + 2
Yeah, you get points for qualifying as well as the race run.
  • + 1
 I see, thanks for clarifying.
  • + 1
Good racing and amazing gwinning! But they have to get rid of that silly cross country section. It kills both speed and excitement.
  • + 7
They can't just remove a flat piece of land, the hill is naturally like that. They need to remove the knuckle on the tissot jump though now that the world cup is over, it's gonna be crap for the people at the SDA race if its hard even for elite women... Tissot jump was fun last year they have only made iit good for the pros
  • - 2
The tracks looking dated now. They need more tracks up there. A steep fast shorter track would be a start. The current tracks to long and flat. Dh shouldn't be about who can pedal the fastest.
  • + 10
Dated? What would be more modern? rocks are pretty old to begin with!!!
  • + 0
I'm sure there is a way you can amend the track somehow that doesn't include this traverse? I've never been so can't really offer a solution, just stating my opinion. I love the rest of the track and am not saying it should be like Windham for example (wide and fast but a tad boring).
  • + 1
Well take the Lourdes track from round one or hafjell and your literally on the edge of your seat watching the guys and girls race.
  • + 2
I can see that. Lourdes really was exhilarating and Hafjell is a blast. Wonder if they're still planning on closing the latter?

maybe part of the issue is that we're all soooo used to seeing ft. William ... Curious...if the track were introduced this year...would it still seem dated?
  • + 1
The bit that is refereed to the XC section isn't even long, I actually enjoy the rest that your body gets for the few seconds that you are on it
  • + 1
@pancakeflatted yes if the track was introduced this year I'd think the same. The top of the track is boring to watch. Who wants to watch the worlds best ride gravel tracks and wooden board walks? Same with the motorway section... You know all the top pros can ride that without issue. The only interesting part is the woods. I personally like to see the riders bike skill challenged not just physically that what makes it exciting. Look at Llangollen last week... Way more entertaining. Besides correct me if I'm wrong but isn't fort William the only lift accessible Dh venue in the UK why does it only have one legitimate track?
  • + 2
@thenotoriousmic The top section is far from boring and is no where near as easy as it looks on the tv.
  • + 2
I'm speaking purely for entertainment value.
  • + 3
Much more impressed by redbull's coverage this race
  • + 2
Gained a new appreciation for Bruni when he crossed the finish line - classy!
  • + 3
Anybody know what happened to Ratboy and Neko?

I saw that, but I thought he was still going to race,
  • + 3
He did race, was 5 seconds back when poyet was in the hotseat, either still feeling it from that tree hit or crashed again probably
  • + 1
Always good to see a syndicate rider on the podium. ..where can i find the replay?
  • + 2
Hey @Pinkbike staff there's a typo: it's Steve Peat, not Pete.
Smile
  • + 1
Monster Maes! Smile crossing my fingers for elite.. I would like to say Bruni or Mike Jonz ftw.
  • + 1
The Rat needs to step it up! nice to see Marcelo representing south america on the podium!

Anyone else feels like Fort William track is getting a bit boring by now?
  • + 1
Props to Marcelo - awesome result!
  • + 1
 Ohhhh Siiiii Gregg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • + 1
Did Ratboy not race...? I thought his crash wasnt bad?
  • + 1
he came in 31st 15.5 second back
  • + 1
HART the best rider! in the good and the bads!
  • + 1
Winningest isn't a word, please leave our language alone.
  • + 1
So much for getting that fork...
  • + 0
So Bruno's quali + 2nd place at Lourdes gave him more points than Gwinn's quali dnf + 1st place? That's kinda lame IMO.
  • - 1
I think the big loser today was Schwalbe-Procore with that big tire explosion. Manor took a big risk and it didn't pay off. I hope she is ok.
  • + 2
 experience matter!!!
  • + 1
 Fort Bill course is NASTY.
  • + 1
Huge props to minarr!what happened to hill?
  • + 1
Still out from the shoulder injury.
  • + 3
Hill was probably sitting at home with a beer watching the race after his shoulder surgery 2 months ago....
