Gwin is on another planet, put 7 friggin seconds into everyone

Apparently he crashed in the seeding run or qualifying, got back up and still finished first in that too by less than a second. What an animal.

Then Kintner must be in another universe.

Not really. Women's times (even on the World Cup) are often further apart than the men's, even with up to a minute/two minute spread between the top ten. Jill is insanely fast and talented, however, and she put down a killer run today. Smile

I mean, it's really not that surprising that the top American rider in the WC by a long shot went fastest by a decent margin.

ambatt is on here, good work on the 3rd!

Thanks, man! It was a damn good race and super fast. Can't wait for the coming races and the World Cups!

Ropelato .04 off Neko... nice! Won't be long until he has a breakthrough at a WC race.

So stoked for Mitch! Would have been great for him to keep his seeding position but I hope that 3rd still gives him the confidence he needs in order to improve things on the WC.

Ya, I'm a fan of Mitch, but he doesn't seem to be doing as well in the WC as he did last year. Hope this gives him some confidence!

So, it's nice to see the results, but why no photo recap? I know that EWS, BME, and other races in Europe were going on, but there had to be someone on the mountain with a camera, right? I mean it was US National champs... Am I just overlooking something?

 Agreed.

Holy crap Kintner won by 25 seconds! That's ridiculous!
  • 6 1
I think that is more indicative of the overall level of American women's racing. Jill isn't even all that competitive on the W.C. circuit against the European women. Rachel Atherton puts nearly that large a gap on Jill every race.

While the times this weekend are indeed indicative of the state of US women's DH racing (along with a few interesting and funny circumstances), you're incorrect about Jill not being competitive on the WC circuit. Not only has Jill been top 5 (or just outside top 5) all season, but she did very well at world champs last year and has remained competitive despite a crazy hectic schedule of racing and coaching clinics. She's fast as hell and as far as I'm concerned, it was a privilege to race with her this weekend and an honor to stand on the box next to someone who is so widely talented (remember that Olympic BMX medal? Yeah. She kills that, too).

Comparing riders' skills is inevitable in this sport, but claiming that Jill's are lacking is simply poor taste, especially when she has indeed done so well and could teach us all a thing or two... Not just the other women that race. Wink

I didn't claim that Jill was lacking skills and her BMX accomplishments prove she has skills aplenty. I watch all the world cup DH races though and while Jill does make the podium, she has not yet achieved the sustained speed to make her a real threat to the top three women who dominate every race unless they flat or crash. Unlike the mens WC, where the top 5 guys are within tenths of a second of the winner, Jill is many seconds off the pace of ACC, RA, and AB currently.

The sad fact is, the bicycle culture in the US is a shadow of what it is in Europe; but it is improving due to the new NICA high school leagues, Olympic BMX, and the role modeling of people like Jill. When little girls start idolizing women's DH stars over WNBA stars etc. and developing those skills the way kids like Jackson Goldstone are up in Canada, we'll see American women really competing for the top spots on the podium.

I hope Ropelato performs this way in the next world cup races. He really has a lot of talent in him.
