Results: Vali Höll & Jordan Williams Win Round 1 of the Portugal Cup DH

Feb 27, 2023
by Ed Spratt
While we still have a few months until the World Cup season kicks off the opening round of the Portugal Cup DH series saw a stacked list of riders competing in Tarouca.

In the Elite Women's race, Vali Höll looks to be starting the season with the same form she closed 2022 as she finds around eight seconds on Veronika Widmann in second place. Mikayla Parton completes the top three, over 11 seconds off the top time. For the Elite Men, Jordan Williams took the top honors as pulled ahead of Rémi Thirion by around a second. It's looking like we will have quite a season ahead of us as both Jordan and Jackson Goldstone are coming into their first Elite season on great form.

Check out the results below.

After this, Aus, and NZL nationals its safe to say that Jordan and Jackson will go full fisticuffs in the wc finals this year

So upsetting that we've got to wait over 3 months for the DH world cup season to start

..and it comes at time of the year when we are less interested though

Love seeing Remi up there. Jordan will be a force. And Vali - is Vali.

Thirion 1 second behind Jordan Williams: that's massive and unexpected!

@danstonQ: unexpected ? He almost never slowed down, he was out for injury but as soon as he comes back he was fast again. So skilled and smooth, always a huge pleasure to watch him ride.

I would love to see this be the year Vali clicks and just starts dominating

Isn't she already dominating? She won the overall
  • 2 0
That seems to be already happening!

@hamncheez: Dominating is Rachel Atherton winning 13 world cups in a row.
  • 6 1
I wouldn't like to see that, that would make the women's racing boring

She's a spoiled brat who runs off interviews if she didn't win the race. Can't stand her face...even RedBull filming a documentary to show us how great she is. I'd love to see Rachel come back and put her where she belongs.

@hamncheez: Balanche is the World Cup Overall Champ, Höll won World Champs.

@owl-X: I'm more of a fan of Balanche. I like her mindset.

@owl-X: It was the year before, I was mistaken.

I would still describe her performance since returning from injury as "dominant"

@StefanPsy: "who runs off interviews if she didn't win the race" Source? Genuinely curious.

Related, in 2021 at Snowshoe, after Pompon crashed out in her race run, we saw her on the lift going up as we were going down. My wife, who is a big fan, shouted, "Go Myriam!" Only when she turned toward us did we see the look of pain, disappointment, and defeat on her face. She gave us a half-hearted wave and smile. We felt so bad. She had just lost the race, the overall, and probably was in physical pain from her crash. No one would judge her for her reaction in that moment.

@hamncheez: I mean, sure, if you're allowing for two or three racers to "dominate." I'm of the mind that whoever won the most recent race is the one to beat, but Höll and Balanche raced 9 times last year, with Balanche taking five of them www.rootsandrain.com/compare89726,45875/filters/years2022
And yeah, that WC DH Overall too, being held together by screws for the last couple races...

Höll is dominating if Balanche is also dominating. And Pompon is dominating.

Whatever.

Love it, fantastic stories always!
