Weird that the number of spectators in this race was ridiculous big compare to most of DH world cup events and this XC track has more downhill specific elements than nowadays dh world cup tracks.

Makes me laugh that us "mtbers" always harp on about our sport not becoming mainstream like road etc, fact is that a lot of people on here can't seem to get there head out of there ass and embrace all aspects of our sport. I mean I ride what m

...ost people call AM which is really just tech trail and a bit of DH. I have a national xc track 2 miles from my house and took my "enduro" specific rig up there a year ago and shit my self on parts of it, persistence pays off mind. My point is xc is gruelling and I respect anyone who just loves what I love. Get out and get riding

Emily Batty Mate, Pauline is okay but Batty is still the best...!

Yolanda Neff Is also very easy on the eyes. Suffice it to say the diet and training shedule of these athletes produces a very fine female form. Perhaps this is a factor in the massive crowds drawn to XC races... or not.

Jolanda Neff's looks definitely got my interest in watching. Then I realized how badass of a rider she is and now I watch for that

This is a bit off topic, but as it stands XC is THE DEFINITIVE ALL AROUND MTB SKILL event. i'm actually starting to get bothered by Enduro touting itself as "THE ALL AROUND DISCIPLINE" when only the DOWNHILLS are timed!!! I understand that the format as it currently exists does demand a very well rounded rider, but why not start the courses at a high elevation (so that the course is stilll 65% descending at LEAST by distance) but time the f*cking climbs!! I don't get why the climbs arent' timed it would make Enduro actually an all around event instead of a pedally downhill broken up into stages. Even if climbs made up only 25% of the course milage (exmaple stage 1 would be a 3 mile stage with 2.2 miles down then 0.8 up). This might open up the podium to someone besides world cup downhillers who decided to gain more aerobic fitness when the EWS came out.(yes i realize graves races xco but with few or no other exceptions, the top 10 in the EWS are downhillers.) IMO Racers like Adam craig who are good downhillers but not elite level, and are beast ass climbers, would be closer to the podiums. I understand that more time can be gained with differences in climbing ability than can be gapped by differences in downhilling ability, and as such I think the climbs should only be a small part of the overall mileage, but I think that's exactly why enduro needs climbs to count. It is not truly an all around discipline when It doesn't give a rider the chance to use their utmost strength to combat their own weakness.

I am an XC racer through and through. But I think you are grossly underestimating the fitness level of the top downhillers, and particularly those racing Enduro right now. In Transprovince a couple of years ago one of the stages had a significant climb (5 minutes), both Kabush and Craig lost time to leaders on the climb.

The way I see it, if you want to be one of the world best gravity racers, you need elite level XC fitness. Not world cup fitness but you better be out riding your local XC hots shots.

BTW the same is true about technical skills for XC racers. If you are planing to race at the point end of a XC world cup then you better be able to out descend your local hot shot DH racers.

It would be interesting to have one timed technical uphill in an Enduro.

Bob is correct. It's anerobic fitness and strength vs more leaning towards cardiovascular endurance. Pretty much all the guys racing DH and taking it seriously are very, very fit. It's just a different requirement, but don't think for a second that even a local elite DH racer won't smoke you on climbs. Erik, that would be neat. Just one, not too long, but would be neat to watch. That said, the liaison stages are still pretty draining from what I've heard.

Rutherford, races like the megavalanche, at least in the actual race not the qualies, do contain a very big uphill, that many of the top riders lose time on to those uber fit racers like jerome Clements. Not even the downhill guys, I'd have to put dan athertons in this section cos he's a beast, could make up time

trying to reply to bob,,, but yea that is a good point. I don't think it's so much that I underestimate the level of fitness of a wc downhiller, but I kind of assumed they were completely different types of fitness--- after reading your comment it makes sense that a WC level downhiller is just in such good shape all around, that this type of event wouldn't put them much out of their comfort zone.

I have more than a bit of experience coaching DH athletes. A downhill race is a 4 minutes, when you look at energy systems, a 4 minute effort is primarily an aerobic effort. The training required for a 4 minute maximal effort, isn't that different then that required for a 1.5hr XC race. Actually the primary difference is body weight isn't as important for DH (it still is important though).

This is what make training for downhill so interesting. To be the best you need to have both incredible aerobic fitness and incredible technical skills. To develop those at the same time is difficult and incredible time consuming. A world cup downhill racer should have training volumes in excess of their cross county counter parts.

For "all mountain riders" (like myself) next time try pinning it uphill, (redline it) leave your seat up, lockout your fork and shock and then try desending -- really fast. Do it for two or three hours. CRAZY HARD.

They do ridiculous shit, like those rock gardens, on 100mm 29 hardtails with a seat up their asses. Then they pedal an insane gear at their limit for a few hours. If you can't respect that just because it's XC, you have issues.

It's been three days of people going "Hur who cares about XC" and three days of the majority of people going "Well, we care, so kindly shut the f*ck up."

So.

We care. Kindly shut the f*ck up.

Cheers! Thank you to the community for CONTINUING to be awesome! Thanks for the link Starship, peeping it now.

Google is your friend mate... (and yes, I know it's the 2013 course, but from what I've heard it hasn't changed much).

sherbet, 15 geeky xc'ers commenting on three articles does not make it interesting or popular. this site used to be interesting and full of rad content. now it's just mundane stuff. if that excites you, you're either dull or easily pleased by mediocre mainstream content.  BikeBlood. . . guaranteed to be a typical 14 year old muppet that cant ride a bike for shit, but insists he is super gnarly because he drinks 3 cans of monster a day. go do your homework little boy.
  • 3 1
This same shit happens with every article about XC... Can't you really understand that XC is as much mountain biking as DH is!? It's those same guys that just wanna look cool with their brand new extra baggy fox shorts while drinking red bull on top of the hill...

Gnarbar. XC is what originally got me into mountain bikes. We have no big hills or crazy parks, so getting out in the woods on my hardtail is what originally interested me in the sport.

I'm sorry you cannot see the finesse or skill involved with XC and can see it as nothing but boring, but I assure you, it's not an issue most of us have. Most of us actually ride our bikes and can put ourselves in the situation of Nico on skinny tires and wobbly rims just sneaking his way through a rock garden. The bike handling skills are incredible.

How about you start finding bikes interesting? It's not our fault you're a boring dude and can't find the fun in something, so stop whining at us about it. Like your momma probably never said, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

XC is not interesting. I'd rather cut my lawn. I started riding DH aged 38. bam straight into DH trails. I ride world cup quality DH trails, some of the best in the world, while you putz around at 2mph on flat trails and fire roads. yeah, cool. so exciting. "bikes" aren\'t interesting. DH is. adrenaline and challenge, risk, life on the edge, extreme sports. not extremely boring XC. as for me being boring, I can assure you I've lived a far more exciting, challenging, comprehensive, well travelled, interesting, satisfying, successful life than you could ever dream of living even if you ride XC til your 223 years old. trust me, you'd really want to be me. really. debating MTB with XC slugs is like Einstein debating the meaning of life with an earthworm. //done

That kind of commenting really tells a lot about you as a person... Not everyone is looking the extreme factor from the sport, there's so much more than just the adrenaline rush and fear of death Big Grin

PB needs to start posting some Roadie content so we can see gnarbar lose his shit completely.

It's funny hearing "ADRENALINE, DEATH DEFYING, SPEED, LIVING ON THE EDGE" and all sorts of buzzwords, then watching his videos he's basically crawling down a groomed trail. That seriously got me laughing. People like this are always all talk.

S'all good to be a novice on a bike, so no offense to any new or slower shredders, just comes off as so funny after all that bullshitting. A bike ride is what you make it, and frankly, every one of these XC dudes are more "Gnarbar" than you'll ever be, so don't talk too much shit.

Cheers dude. Happy trails!

Sam Gaze needs a team to pick him up for next year - especially after winning the Mens Elite XCE in Cairns, then a third place in today... He's got a big future ahead of him!
  • 4 1
Sam Gaze is most likely going to go to Specialized Factory by the looks of it, Beno has been looking after him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he signs with them next year.

More xc coverage please. This is probably why most people actually ride.
