Retrospective: British Downhill Legends

Sep 16, 2015
by Fraktiv
In the run up to the last race of the Rose Bike's British Downhill Series (BDS) for 2015 at Antur Stiniog, Wales, Rob Warner thought it would be a good opportunity for racers from the 1990s and 2000s to get together to ride in memory of the late, great Jason McRoy who died 20 years ago. The 'BDS Legends Race' was born after Si Paton secured special privileges for these riders to compete at a British Cycling event. With 31 Legends racing, donating £75 each (in lieu of the race registration fee), all the proceeds are to go to the BDS Development Fund, a programme which will help the top riders from younger age categories to develop their skills in order to advance them onto the World Cup stage.

We managed to track some of these Legends down - some were easier to find than others - and many of them have been kind enough to both reflect on their memories of yesteryear and tell us their plans for this weekend's race, held alongside the full field of BDS racers. A few pieces we've had to shorten, as some of their achievements and stories were as long as the Nile, but here's a glimpse of their own bit of history.

Scroll through the stories below - hit pause, forward or back - as we get a glimpse of some of Great Britain's MTB Legends.

Just the disc - no calliper.

Why does it look like Warner has two chains?
  • 1 0
Ha! Took a double take then! I think it's gear cable outers?
  • 9 0
probably lost his chain and its flapping around back there

"All I want for my birthday is a big booty hoe" - Rob Warner AKA 2 Chainz AKA Titty Boi
  • 8 1
It's an elevated chainstay, so the second chain is just the top half slapping down next to the bottom half!
  • 11 0
It's off and caught round his pedal axle.
  • 2 0
 Oh aye, so it is!
  • 1 0
That's his excuse not to pedal, just take the chain off the chainring!

Bloodyhell that brings back memories, had a poster of dave hemming on my bedroom wall racing the b17, remember all those riders from back in the day, used to read the mags over and over cos back then I'm sure dirt mag only came out every 2 months, no Internet with its constant barrage of images and content all jostling to try and hold our attention, those old-school images are burnt into my neural pathways.

Had the pleasure of riding with Dave a bit while he was living in Portland, OR. Dude is still a full on power beast. My favorite thing was grunting up some climb feeling like I was going to die while he was in an x-up manual having a casual conversation. Good looks Dave!

Ive had that Hemming experience as well - you're at 110%, he passes you on one wheel with that grin on his face. Up or down, DH, XC, or road. Diving inside you mid turn on his front wheel? You'd hate him if he weren't so damn fun to be with . . . One of you UK lads tell him we miss him out here will ya?

£100 pounds registration fee for the bds next year is a joke
  • 6 0
Come race the SDA then. We have better tracks (I would say that), more uplifts per rider per day. Bang for buck it's way better value. 2016 could be very interesting too Smile
  • 4 1
haha if you're still marking the tracks it will be

I sure am, might have a very busy and interesting winter ahead. Pretty excited....

Go on Pontang! Make it count!
  • 3 1
Yes this!^ and it should have been Nigel (no wage) page
  • 1 0
 Yes! Classic Sprung moments!
  • 6 4
Yeah, that's getting too pricey for a lot of people....but I will say this, the BDS is the premier national series in the world and you only have to see how many Brits fill the top-20 at any given WC to see how successful the BDS has been.
If extra money goes towards some additional prize money for the juniors, keeps the big names coming (Atherton, Bryce, Fairclough etc) then the stream of talent should keep coming through and seeing as we don't really have many real mountains in the UK we punch well above our weight internationally....£100 is a lot but for me (very very average rider) it's worth it to ensure Britain keeps a world class domestic series.

Dave Hemming: I hate to boast, but I'm going to big myself up here and say I beat him in a timed racing event last year (I'm still stoked). He was on th full lycra/XC bike combo and I was rocking my Levi 511's a T and my 31 pound "enduro" bike. I've officially retired a happy man.

I remember that poster of Jason on his red specialized m2 back in the nineties... It was literally what got me into biking and I dreamt of owning an m2 for years. Years later when I finally got a job I did get one and kitted it out with those carbon rock shox fsx... I never managed to quite get those one footers or flat tabletops... NEVER FORGOTTEN. RIP.

Didn't Robs brother Rich win the Rav 4 downhill series before?
  • 2 1
What ever happened to him and the likes of Rob Jarman C.C Anderson and so many more.
  • 1 0
@domo-kun I think Rob Jarman is/was a stuntman or something. I was chatting to a girl who knew him and it sounded like he had a pretty interesting career after bikes.
  • 1 0
He was an animal on a bike so that would make sense. Stuntman... lol.. Is that the coolest sounding job or what?
  • 1 0
There's a film about Rob Jarman, I believe he went into being a stuntman, sustained a brain injury and had to come back from that to riding.

Oh damn.. That's bad.. That must be why I thought coolest sounding

CC Anderson regularly wins the masters enduro category (but is as fast as the elites) in the Scottish Enduro Series - Think he raced most events last year
  • 2 0
Did CC Anderson's mum/wife/daughter ride as well? I am really straining to remember my '98/'99 MBUK issue details now...
  • 1 0
CC Anderson's sister was a world cup skier

That's what i was thinking, thanks aljoburr. Same thing though, innit
