BRETT RHEEDER
Perhaps we can attribute the rising momentum of Brett Rheeder’s career to the young age that he learn to ride. Whatever the answer, he has made a massive impact in the slopestyle community in just five years. Striving to be as clean and consistent a rider as possible and living his own personal philosophy of ‘do what you love’, he now finds himself riding shoulder to shoulder with those whom he grew up idolizing.
Despite an injury ending his season early, 2013 was Brett’s best season yet. He competed in the Vienna Air King, Swatch Rocket Air, Red Bull Bergline, FISE Montpellier, 26 Trix, X-Games Munich and Crankworx Les 2 Alps. At the end of the season, he had racked up three first place finishes, two seconds and a third. “Coming first at X-Games Munich has been by far one of the biggest accomplishments in my career. Not only was it the first time slopestyle mountain biking made it into X-Games, but I also defeated some athletes that I never used to think was possible to."
Along with his accomplishments for last year, Brett filmed Not Bad in New Zealand which became the trip of a lifetime. From the Frew Farm open-loop to the Gorge Road jumps, to the sheep and bungee jumping, Brett says, “I had the best trip of my life so far.”
| I can imagine I will probably be a little nervous to go back to Crankworx Les 2 Alps knowing what happened last year on the same course, but I have put the crash behind me, and have already moved on so it should go smoothly. |
Unfortunately a crash at Crankworx Les 2 Alps, on his second final run, compressed four of his vertebrae and ended his season. Following his injury, he returned home to Ontario to recoup with the help of friends and family. He spent less time worrying about falling behind during his recovery than he did dreaming up new tricks and practicing them mentally over and over. Now, looking back at his three months of forced downtime, Brett says that it felt like it passed quickly, but he was ready to get back on his bike and start practicing for this season.
| It has been a fun ride so far and I look forward to this season and many more to come. |
After recovering from his injury, Brett started 2014 with a bang by releasing "Airs and Alleys" as part of Sony ActionCam's Dream Capture series with Anthill Films. This spring Brett has skipped two early season competitions in favour of filming again with Anthill and another project with Mind Spark Cinema but is looking forward to the FMB Diamond Series starting at Crankworx Les 2 Alps. “I can imagine I will probably be a little nervous to go back to Crankworx Les 2 Alps knowing what happened last year on the same course, but I have put the crash behind me, and have already moved on, so it should go smoothly.”
After a nearly 48 hour road trip out to Kelowna from Ontario, Brett has a temporary home base in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley while spending time filming and competing around the world for the next few months. We can all look forward to seeing the tricks Brett day-dreamed about transfer into reality - via video and at competitions this year.
Brett wants to thank Trek, Bontrager, Monster Energy, Fox Clothing, Sony, Joyride 150 and his parents.
