Sorry but I think this is really dumb, down vote all you want but even the most skilled rider, like Fabio has the tiniest slip up and he plummets 200m to his death and for what? social media uproar, YouTube views? Take wisdom from Sam Reynolds and know when the risk isn't worth your life.
Downcomment, he just showed a passion for the sport and adrenaline like no other. Kind of like the rampage boys, willing to put life on the line for the rush. Kudos to him. This is the definition of what separates the pros from the wants. Willing to die over the sport.
Right on Fabio!!!! You've got an unmatched set of kahunas you crazy fuck!
We're not talking 200+ meters fall on rampage or Danny's stunts while riding a tiny 2 inch rail. That's 200m straight to your death. At least on rampage you will break a couple bones and maybe stop you from falling entirely to the bottom because the mountains usually have all kinds of stuff sticking out to the sides. Only on some spots you would fall straight to the bottom without any obstacles.
@Deartist7: And Fabio was confident enough in himself to a)pull it off, b) make sure if he sliped to throw all his weight right.
All those bashing are just jealous. Dude has skill and balls. Passion. Just picture him walking or driving or riding by this and thinking "I'm going to ride it." This isn't for the views or the snap chat or w.e...this is something he definetly did entirely for himself in the end.
@Deartist7: @Zagee even in the case of Rampage, tough seeing guys like Paul Bas go down. Stoked he's getting back on the bike but stuff like that make you think of whether the risk is worth it. On slip up and this article would have been a helluva lot different. But still props for him for doing it, the dude has balls!
I don't think this is actually as dangerous as it looks. I bet he's really really damn good at falling straight down.
Similar to how nobody walks a tightrope who can't easily fall onto the line and recover.
The real crazy is base jumping and wingsuits, and extreme skiiers - with those sports you're going fast enough to die and you've got no out if something goes wrong.
mkjamison- I'm sure Fabio appreciates having an internet nanny looking after his safety. I mean like, what would he do without concerned citizens such as yourself?!
Agreed. If you don’t respect how important and valuable your life is, at least show a bit for the incalculable investment your parents made raising you. Ridiculous. And for what? He’d better not have a wife and kids.
The thing is that his Granny movie is one of the most entertaining of this year without such kind of ridiculous danger...I skipped this one to the end just to make sure he survived. Danny's Wee day out is absolutely amazing movie without life-threatening stunts (I would be dead zillion times but that's another story:-), I was kind of surprised he did such crazy rooftop jump in Cascadia...why? They are great riders and I wish them long happy lives!
@Deartist7: People could easily get killed at rampage but they are all super skilled. The macaskill vids I was thinking of are the ridge and cascadia. Plus, if Wibmer is able to ride that rail for like 3 mins, he is totally comfortable (well...only as comfortable as you can be lol) doing that and has the skills to. He probably has ridden so many skinnies that he knows how to bail properly also.
#1 - Anyone else thought he was going to drop down onto the observation platform at the end?
#2 - I don't like any stunt where someone's life is at risk for another person's enjoyment. I think entertainment has gone too far, regardless of skill and ability. Anyone see the knife-throwing people on America's Got Talent? They even boasted that the woman has been hit before. Hell, Penn (from Penn & Teller) recently called out David Blane for risking his life doing a real bullet catch. Penn refuses to watch the show and goes so far as to say he's wrong to do it. And he's right.
Houdini, Kineval, Petit, etc. All the greats take risks for fame, spectacle, or some other reason known only to them. We the audience are the beneficiaries of their risks.
Most of us have an inherent need to survive and could never understand how someone could ignore it. Gag is, we can't look away when they do.
This video is very polarizing, but a quick view of those who think this is super - young males who I assume are single, or users we consistently see taking the (shall we say) "contrarian" position . I remember my 20's. The same (lack of?) thing that makes you push yourself gets some guys hurt or killed.
I'm sure Fabio sees it as calculated and we know he's extremely skilled. Some other calculating and skilled athletes: Dane Searls, Erik Roner, Dean Potter, the list is sadly long. Nobody ever admits that they're taking a giant chance, yet the very definition of what they're doing is inherently risky.
@plyawn: Actually most if not all admit they're taking a giant risk but they help minimize those risks through experience and skill. Don't fool yourself, its very well understood because of the tragedies that have occurred in such tight-knit communities. The kick is that most deaths occur in silly and relatively low-risk situations.
@Zagee: You are an ignorant child. Life is precious and worth more than clicks. I understand why he did it, he wanted to make some money. Its just too bad he decided his life wasnt worth as much as potential fame. Have we forgotten how fragile and important life is? #McGazza #Stevey :>(....
Yeah, I don't get it. For me I just don't see the appeal in these types of 'stunts'. It's the originality/entertainment equivalent of something like "Danny Macaskill rides railroad track for 3 minutes straight", only with the added draw of the rider potentially dying if he makes a mistake. I totally understand events like Rampage where there is a serious risk of injury and potentially death, because at least it's the top riders in the world showcasing their creativity and talent in unique, original ways. I just don't really get why we as a culture are drawn to watching a mundane (by top-tier trials rider standards) act just based on the fact that the rider could potentially die doing it. To each his own though, it's just not for me.
@PJD1: That's funny, they just worried about Fabio's safety and you call them jealous? What happened to you when you was childhood to make you become such kind of person that think other peoples kindness are actually malicious? And as Y2J always say: You know what? you just made the list! You stupid idiot!
Let him do it if he wants people. It's his life right Scott, I'm sure he doesn't need any of us, including you and I, to tell him it was pretty dangerous. I trust he has the skills to bail safely. I wouldn't be seen looking over the edge, let alone riding along it!
You only see what the camera shows you. Pretty sure he got a rope on his belt holded by a bunch of friends walking along him. Check his "behind the scene" on his youtube channel, the guy is very calculated on his work...
EVERYBODY !!!!! he's got a LIFELINE !!!!!!! his friends hold him behing him on the rope ! thats why he didnt look back at the end, to make believe there was no safety
Not only, he did it with a safety rope (“Did you have any safety measures in place? Yes, otherwise it would have been totally irresponsible. Although I was just secured by one guy and a rope, which wasn't really a safe way to do it.” www.redbull.com/uk/en/bike/stories/1331831778104/fabio-wibmer-rides-200m-high-rail) , but he also stole my brightest idea!!! Fortunately, I have a video to prove I’m a smarter guy than he is: www.pinkbike.com/video/122268
@mkjamison When I saw the title I immediately had the same thought. Unless he is suspended by a crane with a safety rope I consider this to be really, really, really stupid. But I bet Red Bull is thinking "How could I have missed this one?"
@rcrdrvr Iunno man, the last bit of the video you see him on the railing, don't see a rope. I'd say he straight up did it. When would he clip into his rope? From the ground? The corner? Doesn't ad up @DPSbikes: they're worrying about someone who knows what the hell he's doing. So they're is no need to worry in the first place.
@the-gringo because why not strap a go pro to do it? Simple task and if you can get footage, why not. Ultimately I'd still say he did this for himself in the end and no one else. Look at Sam Reynolds, if they all did it "for the show" why didn't he drop in? In the end it's for themselves. Just because he documented it doesn't mean Fabio did this for the show. @wibmerfabio For the show or ultimately did you pull this act of beauty off for yourself????
This does seem a bit rash, it's just head cam footage though - could he have had a harness on and a leash attached to a car or something rolling along behind him??
In reality the chance of him actually falling is probably negligible. In the event he loses his balance he could probably just jump to the other side or, if worst comes to worst, grab the railing. Now a really strong gust of wind would probably send him flying :-)
@friendlyfoe: Hope the person was pretty strong. That's what I thought at first too. Hell that's what I'd do too, although I have had fall protection training and know of devices that'd work. I'd check all the bolts on the railing too. The railing must have a load bearing standard as well. All that just to stall then I'd chicken out...haha. Hella brave in the wet and icy conditions.
@mirskeinereingefalln: shit, did not see that. I retract all comments made about flat out riding it, I guess he had a safety. Well aren't I feeling like an idiot at this second.
I understand your point but he is an AAJ (adrenalin addict junkie). There are people in this world that makes this kind of things just because they want to, like to, could to... have to. If this makes him feel good, glad to know he did it. Cheers.
@mkjamison I don't think he's doing it for me or you. I'd imagine that it's purely to see how far he could push past his fears. I doubt Shane Mcconkey ever sat around worrying about what we thought of his risk taking, for some people I think the risks (dumb as they might appear from the outside) are what they live for.
@upside: I feel like doing it on train tracks would be showcasing your balance/talent (Macaskill-style, only way more creative and original), and doing it without a rope would be pushing past one's fears (McConkey-style). Doing it with a rope just kind of makes it click-bait in my opinion. To each his own though, just not my cup of tea. Still an impressive athletic/mental feat.
I actually kind of agree, and what makes it worse is I think Macaskills simple hop onto the skinny railroad track in his last video way more impressive.
Yes, otherwise it would have been totally irresponsible. Although I was just secured by one guy and a rope, which wasn't really a safe way to do it.
I'm definitely happy that I didn't need his help, because I don't want to know how it would've ended if something had gone wrong. Clinging with 85kg on a rope held by only one person could have ended up being a very bad situation...
If you don't understand why someone would push themselves to their absolute limit, you probably shouldn't be involved with this sport. Fabio is calculated, just as Danny Mac, Semenuk, Zink, or Gwin are. They all know damn well that the level they are riding at could spell disaster at any moment, and to the same degree, we understand the same of ourselves in our own pursuits. I'm glad riders like Fabio do what they do, if everyone played it safe, we'd still be riding beach cruisers.
@Kaspy: I think that's missing the point. I'm sure they love doing those videos, but to some extent, the totally out of your mind stunts they pull from time to time must be self-fulfilling. It may make more comfortable viewing for the public to see them doing playful and imaginative parts like Wee Day Out, but we mustn't discourage the death defying aspect that keeps them invested in their craft either.
Yeah. Suddenly, riding a granny bike DH seems so tame in comparison. Stupid or no, the ability to shut out the voices in one's head, regarding the yawning abyss to the left, is more impressive than his sense of balance.
Sure, wish I could down vote your dumb comment even more. You don't get to speak for every other person on the planet about what they should or shouldn't do with their own life. You're a shitty, talentless, lame & terrified rider & that's great, some people out there are just much better than you, get the fvck over it. Reynolds was just like you on Rampage day & that's fine, but you know what? EVERY OTHER RIDER manned up & threw down. Reynolds is one of my favorites, he made a call based on HIS feelings. NOT yours, NOT his parent's & NOT any other little keyboard wielding pussy's feelings about it. Reynolds opted out, good on him for following HIS own feelings about what HIS capabilities are. By opting out of the contest this year, he should not be invited back next year. Rogue woulda sent that f*ckin' shit & plenty others that want it more could use that invite & shoulda had it. There may be a conssquence for risking it but there's a consequence for not risking it too. You make YOUR call for YOU & ONLY you, bitch.
Would a parachute work given that the dam isn't vertical i.e. you'd be sliding down the side? I know nothing about parachutes but I can't imagine it'd open that well on the side of a wall
I felt like I was about to fall just watching this. Mad props to this dude. Always something more impressive than the last. Watch his "Longest Wheelie Ever". No words.
Red Bull: Did you have any safety measures in place?
Fabio: Yes, otherwise it would have been totally irresponsible.
Macaskill would have done it in a fakie endo! I think its just stupid that people nowadays live their life on the edge for a couple likes.. like wtf is this? This is a nonsense clip to me and has nothing todo with a gopro of the world submission. Its like watching roofers, i just cant. This is not where mtbiking should go to.
You'd think someone about to take their life in their hands might organise to have another camera angle right? I mean even just to silence the skeptics...
My biology techer explained things like that. People risk that much , because one`s they were the people to hunt mammuts, which also was extremely dangerous. That also explain why there a not a lot of women doing crazy things like that. To me it`s there own choice, so we shouldn`t complain.
Wow what a bunch of little pussies in here. Too bad you don't have what it takes to live the life but jealousy towards those that do won't make your shitty, miserable, worthless existence any better.
progression is all about going against the grain. There's always gong to be safety risks in anything. He's probably skilled enough to have exited to his right in time if he had thought anything was wrong.
@Pedro404: I see this video on Facebook yesterday. It was in the story under the video. Can't remember where it was now..but it definitely said that. The bit about the tying it to the bike was a joke though...the rest the truth.
Its like those russian kids climbing high buildings with no gear and no concern for life. It doesnt set a good example. Didnt take a huge amount of skill, just a low self esteem. This is not pushing the sport, its an asshat idea. Im honestly disappointed in PB for posting it. Laaaaaaame.
Jesus Christ. This whole "next level shit" is getting out of hand. What's next? The only place to go from here is having unprotected sex with someone with AIDS to show how crazy you are.
Great event! love it, if you guys need professional bike lights, feel free to visite our website:http://www.ferei.com/en/product.asp?sid=1 , and email me:Email:ferei2@ferei.com

I'm sure the bike is going and he is straight to the railing he is riding along, with firm grip
surely something a rider of this talent has practised and used on many occasions on stunts with less exposure
Not interesting at all, give me some singletrack videos please, this is not Live Leak!

Danny Macaskill falls and maybe breaks a bone or two.
Congratualtions though, you're really pushing the envelope of Extreme Commenting.
#MyHero
What's next? Brakeless down a bobsled track
Respect for riding that rail
