The second of our GoPro race runs from the World Cup round at Pietermaritzburg features the ever-stylish Brendan Fairclough. Brendog wasn’t at his best in South Africa, finishing 37th overall, but there’s no doubting the commitment from the Brit in this run.
BrenDawg has so much potential he just needs to step up his off season training......seems hes taking the enduro root too. I love watching him ride, hes a beast!
Dirt has a video on brendawg regarding the enduro and dh scene. Even if brendawg doesn't want to leave dh, the sponsors will have the last say....look what happened to yeti...they totally ditched dh for E!
I head somewhere Santa Cruz sued yeti for the for the suspension on the 303 wc so they are stopping production. That might be why they dropped the DH team this year.
I couldn't disagree more. Brendan is setting the example for how people SHOULD look at the sport. If you ever speak to him he is literally just a dude, having fun riding his bike with his mates. Most laid back, awesome guy ever. His crew (S4P crew) created the whole 'sorry for partying' thing as basically a middle finger to people who take it all too serious. Everyone loves Brendan and loves watching him, but I have no shame in admitting that Gee is one of the most boring guys going, his skills are insane, but he's just waaaay too serious. Brendan is the one! He has it dialled! Hero!!
Couldn't more agree with you @jamesp223!!! This one has the good regard to our sport and I'm glad he's not afraid to say his mind as he said about the futur of downhill! Brendog for president!!
That middle section looks like a slog and a grunt (or "Slunt" for those familiar with the Fernie trail). I'm rarely a huge fan of helmet cams but this one was really well done.
He seems like a decent enough guy, seemed pretty nice at a local race I was at. Can't help but feel that firstly that bike sounds and looks like it's not enough bike for the track and secondly, how good he could be with a serious revised training schedule. Stylish as anything though!
Totally agree about his training,he seems to get by on talent alone. He'll always have a job but if he really wants to win races he needs to get way fitter and put on some useful muscle. You only have to look at gee,Gwin and smith to see how much a solid gym routine and serious off season on the road bike helps. It's a shame because he's at least if not better than all of them as regards bike handling skills. I remember rob warner was exactly the same, amazing bike handling but so bloody lazy!
Not saying he doesn't train hard but just by looking at him I can tell he doesn't lift weights, not saying he needs to be arnie but a good muscular body, especially upper body is way more important than people realise. When your tired mid run it helps to have the strength to hold on and keep your lines. Also a good layer of muscle all over is great for avoiding injuries. Im a pti and know what I'm talking about.
@bigbird He said it himself that he doesn't train much. He tried training before the 2011 season, but that didn't seem to work out. It's pretty obvious that he doesn't train that much: you can see he could lose some fat and gain a lot of muscle, which would ultimately help him get faster. I've always said that if he had started training intensively in 2009-2010, we would've seen one of the most dominant riders ever. And the big S probably wouldn't have dropped him...
He basically seems to spend the off season riding his trail bike and dirt jumping which is fine if that's your weakness. His weakness is his physique. Gwin has fully admitted his isn't the strongest pedaller but you can see he has put the training in to be better, thus making him better all round. As much as I support Fairclough or any other british rider he needs to spend more time in the gym and with a pt than on the dirt jumps with his mates by the looks of things.
You can hear him struggling in the lungs, more than you would expect from a top guy like Brendan, he definitely seemed off his smooth self too. But hey brendog on a bad day will still beat 98% of riders down a track so what can we say haha.
He still looks like he riders how he did as a jnr, riders for fun and hasn't stepped it up to that hard off season stuff. But hey maybe his happy doing that, he gets paid, he gets results that will probably keep him on a team, his a character and well known so companies want him even if his results are not the best. Maybe his just enjoying his life and doesn't want to take it so serious.
There is all the chance that he he hit his fitness cap as @bigbird mentioned.
While I agree he needs to hit the gym looks are not always indicative of what they do. Anyone who has seen a small 125lb guy walk into a gym and proceed to deadlift 375bs+ knows size is not always a measure of strength. its the same why massive body builders actually don't use a lot of weight in comparison to their size, they don't train for strength and size is not always a measure of strength. There is obviously some correlation but its not clear cut.
What else do you guys behind your keyboards think professional mountain bike rider Brendan Fairclough should do better? Maybe you guys should sup by his pad and tell him how he could ride better? I bet if you all were nice enough to let him follow you down a run or two it would really help him advance his game.
I think there's a lot of delusion here. Brendan may not be the fittest guy in the world, but if he wanted to be he would have changed it 3 years ago when he said it was just all his fitness letting him down. Most riders hate the thought of the winter training but I guarantee you there's not one day of the year where Brendan doesn't have fun. He doesn't ride dirt jumps because he needs to improve on his jumping, he's fucking incredible in the air... He rides dirt jumps because that's what he enjoys doing, always with mates, always on bikes, always having a laugh, that's living the dream...
Oh yeah, he definitely could change that, but I think he prefers to enjoy his life. He said in 3MG that he had a bit of tunnel vision, but he was having fun and making money so why not keep on doing that. I think a lot of people would prefer being Brendawg rather than Gee, it all depends on how much fun you want to have and how much you want to win.
He needs to get over the threshold of trying to win, and turn it to wanting to win. I love Brendawg but his style can only go so far. He doesn't seem like he wants it bad enough. I hope he puts in the hardwork, and starts putting some wins under his belt. We're all rooting for him.
Brendan is not Jared Graves and this wasn't last years' World Champs track. He seemed underbiked, and that Scott could use some chainstay tape. Brendan is an amazing rider and his Rampage stuff was incredible. Won't see Grubby Graves at Rampage. Cool to see a guy who excels at so many aspects of the sport (actually, both he and Graves - but Graves is a racer and Brendan a jumper and gnar-hound).
This track come on not for him and not for DH RACING. It's like cross country is moving into a more technical tracks and DH RACING it's turning into more pedally friendly witch is so stupid,CX turned more technical because was losing spectators ,it was boring ,now it's a "little "more fun to watch it separate the real complete athlete from the road guys with mtb bikes ,and DH should envolve the same way harder tracks not easier. I understand that maybe they want to make it more women friendly (for some)it's a whole new market but it's gonna kill the spirit and love of that especific category, build some alternatives for women's like in cross country there are women's who can and others cannot but that doesn't take them of the sport. But hey Bren keep it on FIGHT TRAIN HARDER .peace
Big rock gardens, big jumps, huge speed and demanding fitness wise. I dont see a single reason why it shouldnt be on the calender. Its definitely too rowdy for an enduro bike now and the only enduro bikes that did well had been converted into mini DH bikes.
Fitness should be a factor in the DH world cup. It should represent every type of DH riding out there and some courses are pedally. Get over it.
Brendog for president!!
