Won't Back Down: The Steve Peat Story launches tomorrow on iTunes worldwide so we thought we'd share with you guys one of the stories that didn't make the cut.

"Rob Warner needs no introduction. He has been a corner stone of the sport of mountain biking since its conception, not only in the UK but on the World stage since the early 90's. When we sat down to short list who we wanted to interview for Won't Back Down, Warner was number one on our list of people we needed to talk to. He is probably one of the only people who has been around to witness all of Steve's career first hand, so we knew we would get everything we needed for the film.

So there we were. In Steve Peat's shed, on a freezing cold February evening, interviewing Rob Warner for Won't Back Down. We had our script, we had our questions ready and we had all the stories that we wanted Rob to tell us about and, plus we had just come back from Jim McRoy's place a few days earlier who told us to "ask him about the Marilyn Monroe story".

I had heard about this story when I was younger and I remember reading about it back in 1996, but I had never heard Steve or Warner talking about it before and I certainly knew that there was no footage in existence to back up what Warner was about to tell us. During the editing process of a film, It's usually a fairly simple decision, if no archive footage exists, it doesn't make it into the film, but there was something quite different about this story though, which is why we pushed to make a feature out of it and release it on it's own. We have hundreds, if not thousands of hours of footage, interviews and photos from people telling stories that could have made it into this movie, but during the editing process unfortunately will never see the light of day. This story was so f--king amazing though that there was no way it was going to be left on a hard drive, never to be seen by the mountain bike world.

We hope you enjoy watching this as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life, so sit back and watch Won't Back Down: Rob Warner's Lost Story.

"Me and Warner have been mates since '93 and it's guaranteed to be fun every time I hang with him. This night seems like a few decades ago, which I guess it's close to! But all the same it was one to remember. Warner does a great job telling it his way! Enjoy."

That was the best story ever holy shit they were lucky! What was going through your head Warner? I had to pedal fast enough to avoid prosecution and get back to England and get this clap sorted LOL.

I hope this becomes a series!

And then we have gee atherton...
  • + 34
And he is still better than 99% of us will ever be. If you don't know the guy personally then don't judge on his personality!!
  • + 8
@ewigstead Gee was cool till he got all super serious. Like up to earthed 5 (200&Wink he's cool, goes and wins worlds in 2008 and basically stops being cool. No-one even remembers his 2008 worlds run because it was all about Sammy smashing everyone by 8 - 10 seconds then crashing.
  • + 13
Whats wrong with Gee? Sorry if i'm out of the loop
  • + 4
 Gee is a weenee
  • + 12
You can't compare gee or any modern riders with the old guys! I remember this story first time round and of course those two were hilarious, however there is a reason why rob only ever won once. He had all the skills to be the best but never the 100% commitment needed. As for gee being all serious,I also remember that once Steve started winning he got very very serious! And of course that's how it should be. Steve actually took his peak of his helmet as did lots of others,to gain time! That look was so bad for the sport! The sport itself is so much more professional now and it's very hard to earn a ride let alone money. Oh and gee can drink and party as hard as any,I can vouch for that. But now is his moment as with Gwin and smith.
  • + 7
Gee was a legend in the Atherton project. I think he realised he needed to be more serious to win.
  • + 6
@mikelee, what about Ratboy? Being professional is one thing, but for the average rider mountain biking is all about having fun and I'd like to see more of that when I look at the pros.
  • + 16
Ratboy is the perfect example of who we want at the top. He does big whips mid run, gets wild on the track and in interviews, and always has a smile on his face. Sammy will always be the man in my eyes due to his ability to put 6-8 seconds into the rest of the field then make wry jokes in interviews straight after. Gee, whens he ever said anything fun in an interview, you know?
  • + 13
So basically, some people have a problem with Gee maturing?!

Steve was 22ish when he got up to these antics, most of us who are late 20s/thirties are not the same people we were 10 years prior.

And quite frankly, I'm certain that Gee is a damn sight 'cooler' than any of you guys saying he isn't.

How many world cups has josh won? I love josh, amazing ability but I tell you this, once he wins his first wc you'll see him change too. He'll no longer be smiling when he finishes second or anywhere but first. That's what happens once you reach the top,you want to stay there. We ride for fun they ride to win! I don't want to watch the pros riding like me! I wanna see them at full tilt doing things and hitting lines at speeds I could only dream of. I can whip as can my friends. That just doesn't do it for me. However watching gee stick 4 seconds into the worlds best on a pissing wet tack,or Sam Hills vds run when he crashed. Now that's impressive but josh,Brendon etc doing whips, just look like normal guys in the woods. Now I'm not dissing either of those two. I honestly think once josh gets his first win it'll all click as it has for gee,Gwin, smith peaty etc or he can be the class clown making people laugh. Who knows eh!
  • + 2
Peaty won many races and he is still always smiling and having fun, taking serious enough to be a pro, but not that serious to look like someone you cannot speak with. You cannot judge people on what they might or might not do, if something does or does not happen.
  • + 7
It's amazing how people want or expect the winning racers to be off the bike. It's their life and personality - not yours or anyone else. Leave them be and love them for their skill and dedication, balls and competitiveness. Why always Gee? Anyone of you guys would love to be in his company. I 'd love to hang out with him - or any of them and talk shop.
  • + 2
neimbc - I don't want or expect racers to be any particular way, but I am going to cheer for the guys I do like. I don't like Gee as much as a lot of other guys. He's an absolutely amazing rider, but last year I was pulling for Steve and when Gee tagged that tree in Norway and left the window open for Steve I was pumped. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. We all don't have like the same guys and if some people don't like Gee that's ok - it's sports.
  • + 2
This is a pretty interesting debate to read. Whilst I do agree that Gee comes across as boring and overly serious, I can totally understand his reasons for being so. The sport as a whole has become so much more professional than it was back in the 90s, and has progressed an incredible amount in that time, to the extent that it takes real dedication and commitment to succeed. I'd even go as far as compare it to Rugby - back before it was granted 'professional' status the players did a hell of a lot more drinking and fighting, and a lot less training, than they do these days. Now, it's much more competitive, and the levels of fitness and ability are so much higher - like DH. That being said, I still prefer watching riders who visibly enjoy every moment they spend on their bikes. Give me Cedric Gracia or Ratboy over the raceheads any day.
  • + 2
Jeeze, these comments got serious pretty fast... almost as serious as Gee at the start of a race Wink

Warner is the man. Hopefully one day they can hire Morgan Freeman to re-tell his stories. That was outrageous.
  • + 1
Using a boxing anology "styles make fights" and I think it's the same in DH i.e. the championship is better for having serious 'raceheads' vs the characters, or some might argue the more professional vs the more naturally gifted. Rachel Atherton recently said something along the line of....they (the Athertons) have to try harder, and to get everything they can perfect in order to compete, as they just don't have the godly skills inherited by others.

fear & loathing with rob warner. brilliant.
  • + 27
This should become a series it would be epic.
  • + 22
 Very accurate cartoons!
  • + 17
 That just made my day!
  • + 16
I was a bit disappointed that Peaty couldn't handle that drift
  • + 19
Bear in mind they had just been getting wasted in a bar moments earlier.
  • + 13
as the lads say across the pond that was a proper story mate!!
  • + 13
Shit myself laughing. The good old days. There's only one Rob Warner.
  • + 11
 That was amazing haha
  • + 6
Got kicked out of a bar with Warner in Vernon B.C. after the 94 world cup, didn't know who he was when he sat at our table and drank our beer. We were both the same size with long hair and were very visible when we turned the dance floor into a mosh pit...

 MTB with STD!!!!!!

think gee and aaron will have a tail like this after méribel this year?
  • + 2
think gee and aaron will have a tail like that to tell in their entire lives?
  • + 1
Think Gee already has quite a few tails to tell....take a look at the Atherton Project for starters
  • + 3
Met Gee several times and he is a nice guy with a good sense of humour. Surely there should be room for all characters in our sport from tattooed drinking maniacs to racers. Great story however.
  • + 5
Everyone should at least one crazy ass night like that in their life.
  • + 3
That's awesome... I want more. Definitely can remember some go old NORBA Nat bar party's with Peaty and Cedric being the main show for many years.
  • + 1
I was just thinking of this movie yesterday. Is it going to be released on blu ray or just iTunes? I'd rather buy it on blu ray but if it is only an iTunes release I won't be able to wait any longer. I feel like the only person on earth who hasn't seen this yet! So stoked!
  • + 6
Blu Ray and DVD to follow shortly
  • + 1
 Thanks AAdict, can't wait!
  • + 6
 Legend!!
  • + 1
Warner was a pro pisshead but had the talent for sure!!!
Back then it wasn't so mainstream and this sort of thing went on quite often I can guarantee it....some sports are spolit a little bit by evolution/progression.
Keep it pinned...keep it fun....oh yea, and whilst your at it, smash maz up whilst double dipping her, get smashed and then drive your car off a cliff into the brush and ALWAYS make sure u have a good dose of the clap now and then to keep those pedalling legs in check!
LEGENDS
  • + 5
 This is quality!
  • + 4
Remind me never to get in a car if Peaty is driving!
  • + 3
Wow I....I'm........Holy shit! I don't even know how to respond to that hahaha!
  • + 1
That's the kind of story you tell future generations about. Well its needless to say that Rob's speaking and interview skills have progressed a lot from that interview after he won his first World Cup!!
  • + 3
This reminds me why I'm a mountain biker!!

Happy Birthday Mr President Wink
  • + 2
John and Clay admit to there being more ??? That could be interesting ;-) No denying that Warner is class, the Georgie Best of the DH world ?
  • + 1
It always makes me smile that the king of downhill and the king of commentary/general japery, have such a long and colourful history together. Long may it continue..

  • + 3
Surely the statue-te of limitations applies here.
  • + 3
being drunk as fuck right now this was the best story ever
  • + 1
just bought the HD version and watched along. Amazing story! Amazing guy! Love it
  • + 3
 Its great to be young
  • + 2
Look at Peaty with Marilyn there...He's going to smash it!!!
  • + 2
Monroe's? Well that ain't here no more!
  • + 9
Probably because they smashed Marilyn, and the bar couldn't afford a new statue. So they had no reason to call it Monroe's. haha
  • + 1
Warner you legend. LoL Apart from less hair he is still the same as in chain spotting. hahaha
  • + 2
 Hmmm.....
  • + 1
Take note kids: having a blast in the nineties!

  • + 1
Holy shit, what an epic story!
  • + 0
Why are you using a lav mic and not boom audio. The audio sounds better with a boom...
  • + 11
Maybe it's because it's harder to run with a boom if the feds burst in mid interview...

Anyway. Just stating a fact which I read when Steve Peat was open to questions a whole ago. Fully support and appreciate any film maker out there. Especially in action sports. Been a big fan of Rankin, Porter and the likes for years. Let's just watch and enjoy then eh.
