Race Recap: RockShox Enduro Challenge - Mt Buller

Feb 1, 2015
by Jaime Black
Mt Buller, one of Australia's iconic mountain biking destinations held the inaugural Rockshox Enduro Challenge powered by Sram in crisp summer conditions on the first weekend in February. An unprecedented race format in Australia, the event and series are modelled off the Enduro World Series, and certainly represented the epic nature of the renowned events. Spread over six stages, and multiple gruelling liaison linking trails, even top riders were visibly feeling it during what would be their first major enduro race for 2015.

One great Australian view for one great Australian rider

As many riders had arrived a couple of days before the event, most had done a hard day's riding around the entire course in the days leading up to the event, giving themselve an opportunity to recover from practice. With 6 stages to practice and race, transitioning downhillers were in a new element with far more trail to recall and execute come race day. While the trails were typically less intense than downhill, mistakes that lost momentum were as costly as ever.

Saturday s practice saw many riders sessioning Outlaw Express one of two lift assisted trails to be raced and perhaps the most technically demanding.

I'm surprised they even put up a women's podium shot given the lack of photos of them on track. uneven coverage much?
  • 36 2
I agree - IMHO that's the big story of the weekend - Peta won the Road Nationals a few weeks ago, was racing the National XCO rounds in WA last weekend and killing it in enduro this weekend!

yeah weird hey, not even one?

Thanks for that info Davy, Impressive stuff.

the logistics of covering any class was tough, better a mention than none right?

 Yawn. Boring!

Congrats to Peta for the win in the women's, but for me it's not the story of the weekend by a long shot.

Check out the breadth and depth of the mens field, then check out the podium:

1. Jared Graves, 2. Troy Brosnan, 3. Ryan 'Muffin' De La Rue, 4. Richie Rude, 5. Sam Hill.

Notice anything? 3rd place. Now THAT is the story of the weekend. Look forward to seeing Muff in the EWS one day!

Who is Ryan De La Rue ?

You read my mind... Are you spying on me?

the real story here is Sam Hill getting 5th on flats, with an apparent crash by the looks of his knee.
  • 5 2
Graves had some difficulties too with a flattie on the last stage.

Damn, good eye. Hill is the exception to any rules. I'd love to see him spend a season ripping EWS but then again the WC DH season wouldn't be the same so there's only one solution, he has to race both!!! Wink

Hill was running flats, you can see this in multiple photos.
Re-read the the bike check.
"It will take more than an enduro race to convince Sam Hill trade out his flat pedals for clips"
  • 2 1
Nevermind, that dust doesn't look to be the result of crashing... looks like more of natural dustage from ripping around too hard and roosting the loose/soft dirt up haha. Regardless, 5th in one of these events is so damned impressive especially as its just training for him.
  • 3 1
i was hoping Sam Hill for cover photo, but it's OK .. what a legend!

Yeah he got 5th - almost 15 seconds faster than a 10th place but Jared..... one minute ahead everyone - jesus!

Was Sam racing with his custom Knee Brace this time around? I did not see it in any of the pictures.
  • 1 0
Haha, you don't need clipless pedals and a fanny pack to race, bro!

Graves has already proven you don't need suspension to win. This is what his fork looked like after XC nationals cdn.mos.bikeradar.imdserve.com/images/news/2014/01/19/1390114594634-1knt71c4q9vx1-700-80.jpg

Damn! I'm impressed by Graves and/or disappointed in Fox.
  • 2 0
He blew one up in the whistler Enduro and still came top 10 or something iirc.
  • 3 0
 Didn't he win?
  • 4 0
He lost all the air from his fork on stage 1, pumped it up with a C02 cartridge guessing the pressure, then contaminated his brake pads on Stage 2. Got himself through the day, then dominated on Stage 5 to win Crankworx Whistler EWS Stop

Brosnan in 2nd and Hill in 4th, very impressive!
  • 11 2
Interesting that no one mentioned so far that Ryan De La Rue placed 3rd on a 26er. Though beeing a local, he had to race against a stacked field on mid-sized wheels.

I'm just wondering why this format was unprecedented? Have been somewhere else? We had a pretty good national series last year and most states have a good local enduro scene. What have i missed? Looks like a good ebent.

Is women's race a seperate article or did they just get ignored. Shame on you if you didn't think they were worth your time.
  • 7 2
Not the case Dave. Certainly lamenting the women's coverage but logistically this was the best we could do.
  • 3 6
Here we go again. Women's sport is washing and ironing.
  • 4 1
Jaame, you're completely useless. If you can not make your food and wash your clothes you're shit.
  • 2 1
I saw some riders don't put on knee protector. does it relative safe ride?
  • 2 1
It depends on the tracks at buller. Stonefly (which they did) is tight and flowy but wouldn't call it dangerous if not wearing pads. Same with the flow trail copperhead, safe enough without pads. Some of the wider trails might be another story like Klingsporn. Fun place to ride either way.
  • 2 1
 Meant other not wider :-)
  • 2 1
how along with the race track?
  • 1 0
Including liaison stages around 30km with just proud of 1000m vertical gain.

 Maxxis Ikon
  • 2 2
ikon...looks like he finally went to regular fatbar's too...If there's one person that needed to be on bars wider than 740 it's graves..
  • 1 2
Agreed. I expect to see them go up soon. Fatbars at 800, Lites at 760.

What knee guards is Graves wearing?
  • 4 0
Troy Lee Designs METHOD knee sleeve, it is the sleeve that comes part of the 2 part METHOD system (what used to be the Lopes guard) but we offer the method sleeve now alone.
  • 10 11
Anyone else think its interesting that a shimano athlete won a SRAM enduro race?
  • 1 1
World cups are sponsored by Shimano.... Don't see shimano riders winning all the time. lol "sorry you can't win because your sponsored by our rival company"
  • 2 2
 CG and Fabien?
