Hooked up with Mr Div Devlin to scope locations and grab a few test snaps. Not only did it turn out to be the greyest day ever but it started to piss down the moment we set up the first shot. Div sent it regardless couple of flawless runs were followed by a brutal face-plant bleeding from the nose and mouth Div insisted we capture some lifestyle shit before the light faded. m We ve got some exciting projects in the pipeline

On saturday march 19th Matt Macduff sustained a terrible fall attempting to make his way around the Loop Of Doom. After over 3 year of research determination and hard work Matt managed to find everything he needed to make his project happen. Built in a month at the Garden Route Trail Park in South Africa the gigantic structure rises up to 40 ft. in the sky. The crash left him with 10 fractures in his right wrist and 3 fractures in his right ankle. The story behind his stunt is as impactful as the structure itself. A real story of determination.

Natural fires are a huge influence on the Okanagan region of British Columbia. Inspired by a particularly bad wildfire season Harrison Mendel and I had been on the hunt to create a unique burn photo but we were after something real rather than a staged fire photo. Several clearcut burn piles left to smoulder high above Kelowna gave us a perfect opportunity. Hidden pockets of soldering embers and toxic smoke made this a hazardous location but when Harrison slashed into a pile of ash and this wave of molten embers erupted we knew it was well worth the risk despite a deep burn on Harrison s ankle. Huge thanks to Ben Schleith and Harrison for helping to make this photo happen.

The town of Reykjavik even demanded all lights be shut off in the city during this night due to the intensity of the showing here. Our crew went to Iceland with a vision to riding under the Northern Lights and we continually got shut down by weather. We photographed this the last night we were there on a 10 day trip and only saw the lights for two nights at the end of our trip departing our journey beneath a river of green in the skies.

About the photo The picture is called Icarus 2.0. Our inspiration for this shot was the Greek myth of Icarus. The symbol of the first flying man beating the laws of nature and gravity. According to the myth Icarus got wings form his father Daedalus to escape a maze on the island where they were imprisoned. The wings were made of wax so Daedalus told his son not too fly too close to the sun because the heat would melt the wings. He also told him to keep some distance from the sea because the water would make his wings too heavy. Their plan seemed to work out They managed to escape the maze and the island. On the way to freedom Icarus became a little bit too reckless. He flew too high and got too close to the sun - his wings melted and he fell into the sea. Our athlete Max Mey is flying - just like Icarus - over the water and very close to the sun. The difference between the two flying men is that Max lands safely. His skills and his experience let him know what risks he can take and when he should stop. And of course his bike is not made out of wax which is the advantage of the times we re living in today.

Especially against LB Liautard's pictures. There are 100s of roost shot on this site but I haven't come across anything like this green frame and inverted riders.

Robb Thompson that is a very unique shot nice work!

 Honestly what the f*ck?
  • + 14
i'm sorry but there is no way in hell the roost shot should've beaten JB's photo... what are people even thinking! the roost shot is good yes but it's pretty generic and not creative and JB's is a much much better photo, the framing in it is great and the colours and it's actually clearly had some thought put into it not just the usual 'just kick up some dust'
  • + 3
I agree to certain extent but I am somewhat bored of people moaning about the bloody roost shot. This is a biking website- people may not be looking for the photo that is most creative but just looking for a photo that makes them want to go and shred their bikes. I didn't vote for the roost shot myself but can understand why people did. Also, it's not exactly a boring roost shot... imagine the state of the photographer and his gear a split second later!
  • + 3
@gavlaa: i agree about people moaning about the shot and i don't have a problem that it's in i just can't believe how it beat a much better and more creative photo, admittedly i do photography myself so that is partly why but even when i try and view it for the riding i still think JB's is better and roost shots are really getting boring now just like anything thats overused, anyone with a decent camera could go and get a shot like that roost one if they know how to use it and have a decent rider, not everyone could go out and capture what JB did
  • + 3
I'm a photographer too, but in case of this competition I ask myself the following question:

If I should choose one of these photos to represent what mountain biking is about, print it as a 6x4 ft poster and hang it on my wall, which one would it be?

Yes, if I should judge the artistic value, the photo of Bruno Long would be my favourite - but if I looked at it while standing on the other side of the room, I probably wouldn't even notice there's a mountain bike in it.
If you want to judge colours and landscapes and whatnot, go to Outdoor Photographer.
  • + 2
@Extremmist: i agree i also love bruno's one think that one was underrated too, but personally even with a poster i still think JB's would be great however if i was to have a poster for the riding/photo combo i would most likely choose christoph laue's cause thats good on both parts (hoping he wins now) and i reckon his would make a good poster
  • + 11
Can't believe Robb Thompson is out... great photo buddy
  • + 2
Will probably get downvoted but it just feels like a gimmick to me. It's like a more polished version of when you were a kid building jumps in the woods and you thought it would be way more X-treme if you put a tiny little fire behind your 1 foot high launch to flat. I did think I was in the minority with this view as normally it seems PB shits its pants every time a picture with fire in it shows up but if it lost the vote here, then maybe I was wrong.
  • + 2
My thoughts exactly...it was either that or the aurora borealis one by @parisgore
  • + 5
Is it just me thinking that Bruno Long's shot should be a top contender? The use of light and shadows is incredible. I was sure it was going to win when round 1 started
  • + 5
Sucks that my two favourite photos are up against each other. Shannon vs Laue should be the final.
  • + 1
That is the toughest match-up in round 3, hands down.
  • + 2
This is not a good way to find out who we think has taken the best photo. Sure the match up idea is entertaining and interactive, more people will come back to vote again and will be eager to see the results of "their" picture. BUT it is not a fair voting process (for obvious reasons).

A much better way would be to have a simple vote. If the organisers want to drag it out for a week then you could have eliminating rounds (lowest percentage gets the boot).

I want to know how many people voted for a picture that is compared to all the other contestants not just compared to whatever was matched up that week.

Really unfair on the contestants who are left wondering "what if my picture was matched up differently" or "where exactly did I place". Anyway cool pics

This is the bigly time and things are gonna get killer. So sad! Frown
  • + 10
No. I'm sure if it would be about voting for the rider, mcgarry and smith would be on top. But it's about the photo and some of them are actually much better than the wallride - to be honest...

(Even if it's a awesome photo, like any of them obviously!)

The loop has to win, only because of the fact that its the only picture that cant be repeated even closely. And it is shows a moment when mtb history was written
  • + 7
It's always interesting to see what other people use as criteria to judge these photos. I totally agree that the loop photo has iconic appeal, but it so lacking in photo technicality that I can't vote for it in this contest. My criteria is technically stellar photo that showcases great talent while inspiring awe of the sport. Others are more into "braaaap", some are all about the artistic side. That's why this is a cool contest, in my opinion.
  • + 1
@robwhynot: I thought about the saying "A picture is more than thousand words " and I have to say the foto of the loop "tells" me the sickest and most adventurous story. On the other hand it shows no fotographik skills or something like that but isnt this the amazing part ?
  • + 4
Interesting, I had the opposite reaction. It's a decent photo of an extraordinary event - if there had been 20 photographers there, 19 of them would have captured similarly amazing shots. I'm looking for the extraordinary photo - the one where 100 photographers could have been there but no one else would have put together the same shot. To each his own.
  • + 0
I had Dave Trumpore for the win.
But then I also had Bernie, äh, Hilary Clinton for the win.
So it will be Christoph Laue then.
  • + 5
I'm disappointed the loop beat out Trumpore's shot. No amateur with a DSLR is going to pull that off, the Loop shot, while an iconic moment... nothing to write home about photographically.
  • - 2
All these photos are spectacular, but I feel as though past photo of the years have had more interesting/impressive shots overall... In my opinion, none of these are as spectacular as last year's winner.
