Dead Horse KILL THE ROOST NOW !!! Madder
  • 37 1
Chris Pilling's photo is fantastic, I'm a little surprised...
  • 35 2
@luke-miller: After years of witnessing the POY contest full of roost shots, I'm definitely not suprised.
But I'm sad, really sad
  • 26 0
I have voted against it every time. But if I am honest, the second I saw that shot in the original 32 I lost all hope.
  • 32 0
Just title it "Roost 148" and everyone will hate it.
  • 26 3
I think with this particular shot you have to look at it a little different to maybe past years' versions, where a rider/photographer has set out purely to get a simple berm roost shot and nothing more. If you've seen Deathgrip, you'll know that this was anything but that. Yes, it's a roost shot...but the skill, strength and general balls to get THAT roost shot are probably more than that involved in any of the other shots left. It also ticks a lot of boxes photographically. I am by no means discounting the talent or quality involved in any of the other shots, but I also don't think the roost shot should be passed off or discounted as 'just another roost shot'
  • 8 3
I don't know... I'm beginning to think hatin' on a roost shot has become the new roost shot -- way too popular with the masses and requires little to no talent/thought. (At least that's what I'm told about roost shots...)
  • 10 1
in defense of this photo, it doesn't look like roost as much as rocket exhaust!!
  • 10 2
"E-Roost 28.99"
  • 7 0
@TombPhoto: agreed, I’m fed up of the general roost shot in this comp, but having watched death grip numerous times I like what this pic represents
  • 2 1
I thought it was an unlimited e-bike or mx cranking the throttle while applying the front brake
  • 2 1
@Thustlewhumber: "E-Roost 28.99 dub Norbz Public-access-issues ocean-fill bottle cage new standards" I can smell burning already.
  • 1 1
looks like he's riding one of those new fangled e-bike things...Smile
  • 1 0
this contest has become so predictable...
  • 74 0
 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh well
  • 29 1
Yours is the champion in our hearts. Damn roost.
  • 10 0
Chris! Insane shot, envious of your skill!
  • 4 0
 so sorry mate
  • 63 10
I understand, he's Gwin, but come on...
  • 8 0
I predict that he or the sunflowers will win, but my money is on Gwin
  • 2 1
@hamncheez: The sunflowers is a cool shot, but I voted against it this time. It reminds me too much of a Sunset magazine cover or something.
  • 1 1
I don't what so special with that photo
  • 44 6
My feelings are that this is a cycling photography competition, there are some great landscape shots in here but in my opinion the bikes don’t add that much, the photo works with or without them. I want to see a winner that only works BECAUSE there’s a rider. I was sad to see Jb’s shot lose out, that’s a great shot that wouldn’t make sense without the rider there, it’s a great biking photo...same with the roost, it’s a cycling competition and again, that photo only exists because of the riding involved otherwise it’d just be a random photo of a corner.

So yeah, landscapes are great but can we please choose a winner that has a photo that can only exist because the rider made it exist please?

nothing’s worse than the winner of one of first POY comps: Some sunset huck where I could literally take one of MS Windows backgrounds and photoshop a dude on a bike into it in a matter of 5 minutes including program loading time and googlin for a doner pic.

You and Ben Cathro can fight it out for Vlog of the Year Wink chhers man!
  • 32 1
@WAKIdesigns: except the photographer didn't. He traveled to the Gohbi Desert without knowing what they'd find, and shot a beautiful sillouhett during a perfect sunset... Don't devalue it because you think you can make a "fake" version so easily ;-)

@davetrumpore: i did not mean it was a fake. It wouldn’t even cross my mind. What I mean is that that was a rather banal picture. The photographer surely took tens if not hundreds better pictures on that trip. This is not a crtitique of the photographer but of the voters.

@aliclarkson I know nothing about nothing but I completely agree with you. Take your landscape photography to the Garden Show.
  • 8 0
Yeppp! JB Liautard photo should pass, that pinture has strategy, instead just a pretty landscape.
  • 5 0
Exactly. JB's was my favorite. Sad to see that pic gone.
  • 9 0
 JB Liautard got robbed.
  • 19 3
At least 'roost shot' is a biking photo, these drone landacapes with a small dot somewhere (which is the rider/s) IMO isn't in the spirt of the comp.

But I am Butthurt over match 7, the (IMO) POTY beaten by a lame as landacape that shouldn't even made the starting list.
  • 4 0
Ditto, that Liautard shot is my favorite this year. Matchup 1 also eliminated a great shot, which makes me want to go on a ride.
  • 6 2
Spirit of POY. Holy sht... we have now “what real mtb photography is about” puritans...
  • 2 1
 @WAKIdesigns: touche' I feel knobish.

  • 12 0
I use JB Liautard's photo to show my photography class examples of FREAKIN" AWESOME use of strobes. And compositional technique. And...
  • 13 2
 What does all this mean?

PBers hate jumps, and they hate big jumps even more. Match 5 says it all, smh.
  • 11 1
JB Liautard for sure deserved to be on top, but...
  • 9 0
JB Liautard best photo by far..... but it's not a DH or Enduro photo.....
  • 7 0
& hope Robb Thompson gets to the end
  • 2 2
 Filip Zuan !
  • 7 0
 NO Match 3 ! Ahh !
  • 3 0
This new matchup #4 will kill me. Lesser of two evils here... I'm mad at the roost for beating the endo, and mad at the landscape for robbing JB. Meanwhile, both photos are still cool in they're own way... Blank Stare
  • 2 0
It's not that easy to vote.
Some vote according to how well the photo was thought out, or the photographic skills, some want the rider to be prominent, some want the photo to kind of embody the "spirit" of mountain biking.
A larger competition with different categories would be insteresting too.
  • 11 7
Only one roost photo left, don't let it get past, we can do this! No offence to Ewald.
  • 16 0
There was only 1 to start with...not a good sign.
  • 2 0
@MortifiedPenguin: Huh you're right, could have sworn there was a couple.
  • 3 0
It's pitted against the Filip Zuan shot, which is nice too, but I think the roost shot is a way better biking shot. So I guess it'll come down to the final round...
  • 4 0
Now, no Freeride photo . Choice is just for hickink and trekking mountain bike. Sad times .
  • 4 0
happy about match 6.. match 7 i'm surpised though
  • 3 0
I must have a bad idea of what the picture of the year should be because every picture I selected lost!!!!!!!
  • 4 0
Select the roost this round... Wink
  • 3 3
I honestly doubt the fairness of the contest though. How can a user (who creates his account towards the end of the picture submit phase) upload a total of 1 shot and then it gets into this contest?

Dont get me wrong, all those shots deserve it, but I am sure there are at least as amazing shots on here from photogs and/or users that uploaded the content during the actual year?
  • 14 1
You can nominate your own photos, and the judges pick the top 32 from that pool. A lot of people create accounts and upload photos for the contest each year, so there's nothing odd or unfair about it... And in this case a beutiful photo made it through.
  • 4 0
Final will be roost v Gwin
  • 1 1
Okaaaaaaaay? This morning it said last day to vote. I was out of town most of the day... but I figured that I could vote in the evening. Get back on and Round 3 is closed. Seriously?! Apparently, they don't mean what they (seem to) say. Frown
  • 4 1
 Disappointed with Match Ups 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8.....
  • 2 0
agreed on 2,5,7,8, 3 was a toss up for me but I voted with you.
  • 3 0
WTF happened with match up 7? the POTY ia already knocked out?
  • 2 1
Well, I was forced to vote roost. Zuan's shot is epic and I was tempted, but it breaks rule of thirds with heavy ghosting along the ridge from over processing.

  • 2 0
really hope dave trumpore wins this one
  • 2 0
 Satchel still in the game.
  • 7 5
Does anybody else find the Trumpore photo perspective extremely awkward?
  • 5 0
I think what you find awkward is what appeals to most people. Not an insult BTW just what I think.
  • 1 0
@butters1996: I'm wondering if the pic has been tilted or there is fish eye effect? Look at the ocean horizontal
Tilted pics is something I (personally) can't stand
If it's fish eye, Awesome pic
  • 1 0
@nojzilla: Yep i believe the short focal with long perspectives and lines give a weird feeling with that picture
  • 9 0
@nojzilla: it's a fisheye which I try to avoid, but there was no other way to convey the height and exposure of the ridge. I shot some with a 17-35 but it just flattened it out. The exposure camera right is about 250 meters straight down, and it was dizzying to stand there and shoot... To me the fisheye gave the feeling I was after (though I dislike the curved water on the horizon, and could always straighten it in Photoshop... But then it's a bit contrived).

better photo won for sure, i could go to whis with a decent camera and take that losing photo all day long - Robb Thompson captured something pretty cool, definitely not a shot you see every day
