I think it's a fallacy to say a photo is a bad photo just because it's a... Eh, screw it. The mob has spoken.

@TheR: Ding dong, the roost is dead...
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: the roost will never die it just falls out of favor from time to time
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: Damn shame, too. I do like the photo it lost to. It would make a great tourism photo for Switzerland. What do you suppose those two little dots are up to along that ridge?
  • 1 0
@TheR: Lol. The roost was quite a dynamic photo. It's just a little weird... I vote for something, and then I wait, and the available options change, and I have to pick new ones, which I often wouldn't have picked. Then I have to vote for one of two, neither of which I like more than some other photo that lost. Oh well, such is the layout.

I still love that shot of Gwin from Isac Paddock. Perfectly timed, perfect body positioning, steely determination. Would have that on my workshop wall for sure. I mean I'd have all these on my workshop wall but yeah, just sick.
  • 53 1
i had kind of assumed that was the shot that would win. really amazing photo
  • 4 0
I'd be surprised if he wouldn't sell you a copy for your wall.

This was my favorite and then the andy Pollock one.

yeah man. thats the difference. this is a mass public photo contest. is what it is. the eyes in that photo alone are enough to win the damn thing...it's all about the eyes!
  • 4 0
@ccolagio: Also from the photo technical point of view the eyes are super important. Now imagine Gwin going in your exact direction in warp speed and manage to focus pecisely on his eyes. I'd love to zoom in that stunning picture in full resolution.
  • 2 0
 Seriously cool pic right there
  • 4 0
@juicebanger Would've been my picture for the win as well.

The shot of Gwin is a 1 in a million shot, whereas you could set up the other shot as many times as you liked until you got it perfect.
  • 67 4
How did Rupert Fowler's photo on match 3 not win that? More unique terrain and you can actually see the bike
  • 10 10
I was thinking the opposite, how did it win in the last round against that sea bridge shot? I think it is such a boring photo, yeah they went to a cool place but rider is doing something fairly generic and the light is doing nothing special, it is a good photo but not compared to the sea bridge shot if you want to talk about unique terrain and the timing to get that sunset shot is just as amazing I think.
  • 8 0
@anyexcusetoride: You could say the same thing about the bridge. Show up, heft bike up, wait for good light, ride across.
  • 11 0
It's my favourite shot of the bunch. Every time I see it, I just want to go sailing down that snaking path.
  • 20 2
Never underestimate a picture that reminds you of just riding with your mates. A great photo relatable for the everyday rider.
  • 7 0
@Poulsbojohnny: that's the exact reason I didn't like the bridge shot. zero purpose beyond a cool photo. Fowler's shot looks like a killer line and a lot of fun... basically the opposite.
  • 1 2
 Because shiny and bling.
  • 1 1
Here's different between a photo appealing to most most people, and objectively the best photo. Turner, Monet, and Whistler also won't do well in this... I vote impressionist rooooooooooost
  • 1 0
@Mojo348: actually an impressionist painting of a roost shot would be pretty fantastic.
  • 1 0
@anyexcusetoride: yeah, I was bummed they went up against each other so early
  • 1 2
Especially when the photo it lost to shows the rider with their right foot down. Look closely, and it definitely looks staged...
  • 1 1
@anyexcusetoride: The seabridge shot is epic!
  • 27 2
I feel like we are whittling the photos away to the lowest common denominator. The best photos have already lost. No more head to head photo contests. Should be choose your favorite photo from a pool.
  • 17 0
I'm not ever a fan of contest for this reason. The starting selection is more a showcase of talent than it is a contest, and by the time it gets down to the end it loses that big impression. Look at the final winning photos in a contest like Red Bull Illume and compare it back to the original short list and it's the same result, even when the voters are photo editors and not website members. But since it's a contest there's no way around it, and someone has to be the "winner"
  • 5 3
bottom line is I’ll be rocking your pic as my iPad wall for awhile. By far my fav of the 32.
  • 4 0
@davetrumpore: At least with illume the starting selection is not forgotten. Even get a great coffee table book out of it.
  • 1 1
@davetrumpore: I agree and feel great sympathy with your view; but even the original 32 were a subset. We all only have attention for just so much and no more. As I write this though I get the feeling that the ONE misses the diversity of this sport/game/adrenalin rush/meditation that we all love so much.
  • 2 0
 www.pinkbike.com/photo/15541982

was my fav and went out early. I think it's a stunning photo that really captures what most of us actually do.

I'm not a fan of this head to head voting. Put them all in a pot and the winner is the one with the most votes.
  • 1 0
Amen. Looking at Round 4, I'm guessing the final will be Satchel Cronk vs Robb Thompson, with Satch eventually crowned POTY. Are the photos cool? Yes. Do I think the results should be different? Sure. But that's opinion... hence the contest. Honestly, pretty much all were awesome. But the contest format could change...
  • 25 2
Gutted Andy Lloyd hasn’t got through. He’s the winner in my eyes. That shot is perfection. Blue skies, perfect backdrop, reflection, green grass, bikes... I can even smell the Stien full of Pils at the bottom it’s that ruddy clear. Well done chap, you’re my winner...
  • 6 0
Maybe the rider size related to the background probably is why it isn't getting picked, just a bit bigger would have made this one awesome. The other nature ones just don't do it like this one. The reflection is sick!
  • 1 1
true, it takes such a good eye o take that picture
  • 4 0
I guess people on their mobile have a hard time finding the rider...

100% agree. His photo stands out from the rest. But if the USA has taught us anything, its that voting doesn't work Wink

  • 5 3
 @k2rider1964: Trump isn't fine
  • 4 2
Let's be honest it's pretty clear Trumpore rigged that contest to make himself win...
  • 7 3

@mollow: You got me, was it collusion?

totally unexcited by these final match ups. all my favorites are already eliminated including the deathgrip shot
  • 20 3
Am I missing the appeal of Dave Trumpores pic?
  • 11 1
I was wondering the same thing. He snaps some real gems, but I'm not feeling this one.
  • 5 3
Me too - didn't even vote for it in round 1. It feels cramped to me.
  • 6 1
It's been my favourite from the start. I love pictures that make me wonder where the rider is coming from or going. especially when it looks like thier at a good clip. plus to make that scene look good the photographer needed some talent and effort.. that my take on it
  • 7 0
You're not the only one. One one hand it's beautiful, but on the other I'm seriously confused by the rider. I have no idea what they're doing and it feels uncomfortable.
  • 4 2
I personally like it and it is one of my favorites from the start. I hope it wins
  • 1 0
 @WAKIdesigns: I'm sure you do.
  • 1 1
@fatduke: yes I fricking do. Love Daves pictures in general and Madeira is amazing.

@fatduke: funny enough, I’d love to photoshop roost into that picture

The Gwin pic is one of the most iconic shots i've ever seen and it's a shame it won't win Frown
  • 9 2
Top respect to the best bike photographer i've ever seen (loveyourjobdave), but Trumpore's photo wasn't ''better'' than the Indian guy. That craziness has something more, it is not easy even to take a shot with reflex also snowed mountains. Think on it guys! Maybe next year take the creator name out...
  • 10 1
My favorite was by Andy Lloyd. The one with the guy jumping and mirror reflection in the water below, very blue sky mountains in the background.
  • 10 2
 Stunning upset for Roosty McRoostface!

 Enduro has officially taken over.
  • 9 3
I wish you could choose neither on the second match up this round... I want to see mountain biking not landscapes!!!
  • 8 2
"Mountain biking". The clue's in the name.
  • 5 2
Looks like Dave's Madeira shot is a favorite to win. We should be so appreciative of the photographers heading out chasing race after race to take these amazing action shots for us. It's difficult to capture a live, non-staged action race shot of such quality. Poor guy was probably covered in leeches as he snapped that shot haha.
  • 7 1
just call me non-plussed about these quarterfinals. I think some of the best shots went out way too early.
  • 7 0
Done voting. Format is crap and the best photos imo are already out.
  • 6 3
Some of those photo are amazing scenery with optional biker. Pinkbike photo of the year should be bike first ,mix of bike skills and photo skills (timing and aperture), scenery in second.
  • 6 0
Well, that was unexpected. Did not think the Gwin pic would get the boot.
  • 5 0
If you look up "SPEED" in the picture dictionary, Isac Paddock's Gwin is there.
