This weekend was the first combined race of the season, bringing together the Osprey Kootenay Rockies and Osprey BC Enduro series for a packed race of 196 registrants! The event was hosted at Red Mountain and supported by Revolution Cycles in Rossland, both parties helped out tremendously, keeping participants hydrated with beer samplings from Rossland Beer Company, and new drivetrains for their tired bikes. At the end of the day, there were a lot of dirty, sweaty people walking around in their Kazoom Custom Jersey's.
Special mention to Manuel Czerny from Krichheim, Germany, he finished 19th in the race, only difference, is that he has been riding his mountain bike across BC, in search of singletrack. Coming into this race he has about 2000+kms in his legs. His prep before the race was nothing more than a new cassette on his trusty Norco Fluid!
A massive thanks to the course designer and logistical wizard Ryan Kuhn of Cycle Eye Mountain Bike Coaching, he put together an amazingly diverse course that wound its way around some of Rossland's premier trails. Think big climbs, stellar views and fast descents. Thanks RYAN!
For this event, we also played a little game. 12 Cans of beer were hidden around the course, if you found one, your mission was to drink the beer as fast as you can and #BCES or #BCenduro. Check out Colin Gilbert in action!
Mr. Harder, a true wizard on a bike and total gentlemen, I think he's just happy that he didn't get the elusive #69.
Starting on Saturday night, we kicked this event off a little different from our usual gypsy camp. We had DJ Soulman crushing it with some tunes while racers checked in on the patio of Red Mountain and enjoyed some cold beer sampling from Rossland Beer Company. Fittingly one of their best beers is the Paydirt Pale Ale, it's name comes from the trail that racers charged down in stage 5.
Stage one was a fast and flowy trail down Monticola, this trail is a hoot and an excellent warm-up!
Stage two brought riders near the start of stage one, but shot them down a trails called B.S., a trail that is best ridden at speed, with as many friends as possible, it has many deliberate line choices, with a few sneaky doubles thrown in for good measure! Thanks Ryan!
Nick Quinn sends it, unfortunately, he had to end his weekend early due to a mechanical.
Stage three was pure old school; an uphill start, with more than a few bridge crossings, this stage opened your eyes before you headed into the transfer stage and climbed to the summit of Red Mountain
Dustin Adams living the saying, "Jump for show, corner for dough!"
You can't frown when you're riding down! Transfer stages made easy!
Stage four was a wild one. Loose, steep and fast down the old DH race Course.
James Rennie is an engineer, who designs waterparks during the day, and an absolute sender during the weekend! Here he is going full moto!
Matt Monod, doing it for the kids, and on a hard tail!
Mateo is under five feet tall, doesn't hold a driver's license and can't drink a beer. But he will out corner, pedal and jump anyone who can hold a beer.
Stage five, home of the infamous 'Blue Eyes Drop'. This stage was a crowd favourite, a very diverse trail with a mix of features, corners, tables and pedalling!
Tsering, trying to stay cool!
Henning Schipper, "when in doubt, throttle it out!"
Julienne, cornering her KTM SX450, I mean, KTM Mountain Bike!
Racer's finished Stage 5, right at the base of Red Mountain, close to beer, a bike wash, and over $1500 in door prizes!
Our 'Race Crew' (Volunteers) held down the fort big time this weekend, some vollies were out in the sun for almost 5-6 hours. We seriously couldn't do it without the support of this crew. We had lots of positive feedback about the marshals, first-aid and helpers, so a massive thank-you to all of the volunteers!

Contemplating life's decisions, another beer, or another bike ride!
On a parting note, the BC Enduro Series was happy to raise $1250 for the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society. Our next stop is at RETALLACK, where Mike and the boys will be rolling out the carpet to those who were lucky enough to get an entry! That will be the final stop of the year for the BC Enduro Series.
Video's of the event:
Big thanks to Jose (The Legend) Letelier and Tom (Tombo) Bradshaw for their help!
Thanks Ted and Megan! Great event as always. I completely died after that climb up to the top of Red. Stages 4 and 5 were all about holding on and surviving. Stage 1 was one of the best trails I have ever ridden. No pedaling, all pumping!
Lesson: Drink beer to go fast.
Disclaimer: That might not work all of the time, but it is the fun way.
Thanks to everyone that made it an awesome weekend, Ted, Ryan, The Lions Campground, etc.
