Salvo Dirt Jam

Oct 18, 2010
by Eric Palmer
The guys at Salvo (South African BMX company) organised a race/dirt jam at UCT (University of Cape Town) on Saturday... a good day in the sun with friends is always a recipe for fun!

Loads of pics inside...

UCT (University of Cape Town) trails have grown somewhat from the last time I was there & are looking good thanks to Nils & his crew & was the perfect spot for a jam. A nice grass bank overlooking the trails was perfect for spectators & at the foot of Table Mountain it doesn't get much better for shooting & great jumps... everyone was sorted!

I missed the racing & only saw the last few riders battle it out & in the end it was the untouchable Darryn Stow in 1st. He's been winning everything he enters this year, a great season for him!

Then to the jumping...

With Malcolm, Rigby, Jason & the Daylife Crew (keep your eyes & ears open, these guys are making some of the best BMX parts around) I knew I wouldn't have a shortage of good riding. Everyone had a bit of a warm up & then a few runs each. It was a comp & best trick in one. Malcolm took best trick & that took him out of the competition standings to give someone else a chance (he also won a separate comp in the park that morning!), so Rigby took 1st, Rudi took 2nd & Lawrence took 3rd. There was also a MTB DJ section & Justin took 1st, Ryan 2nd & Ben 3rd.

Africa...right? Why aren't there any black people? What's that scene like from a class/race perspective? Are there any initiatives to get black (poor?) riders support in FR or BMX?

there are more black guys riding in JHB & more coloured guys here. There are a LOT of projects to get black kids into racing & Sifiso is helping a lot with that too, so expect more black racers, but there isn't much money in this side of things, so it's normally ppl that can afford the bikes riding

Seems like a good event and all, but surely at a thing like this they would have made it compulsory to wear helmets. Not only to protect themselves, but to set a good example for kids and others that may be watching.

They dont wear helmets for Bmx street in X games, same with street skate

boroks, Jors is Afrikaans, hence the Afrikaans spelling of December... loads of guys here also spell Saturday, Saterday because of it too. So quit being a wise ass...
