Video: Sam Hill vs. Remi Gauvin - Pinkbike Hot Laps

Oct 13, 2018
by Pinkbike Originals

After Sam Hill took on Hot Lap challenge he was close but couldn't quite knock Remi Gauvin off the top step. Check out this POV comparisson to see where they made up time!

The Track

The trail used is called Credit Line. This was chosen as we consider it to be a pretty complete mountain bike trail that tests various riders' skills.

Current Leaderboard

1. Remi Gauvin 3:22:87 (See video here)
2. Sam Hill 3:23:18 (See video here)
3. Yoann Barelli 3:28:75 (See video here)

Sam actually stopped to take a piss, twice, and was just a second behind. This was confirmed by the cameraman

Took Remi years to master trail, takes Sam Hill 1 run

 @mkotowski1:
I have to agree that Remi must have bit of intel on Creditline. So props to Hill for riding maybe blind (?) or a couple runs and being INSANELY fast!
  • 4 0
@mkotowski1: Agreed if these are Remi’s Local trails then he has a clear advantage over Hill. Not by much though. Sam still rules. Ridiculous speed from both of them.

Would be interested too know power output levels Tooo!

Jesse Melamed obviously, then Richie Rude, etc. More importantly why isn’t there a woman’s contest?

Yeah let’s not forget about anti pronoun race too. Have to include everyone.
  • 35 3
It should also all be done on the same budget build bike ala "star in a reasonably priced car"
  • 235 3
@jflb: I’ll race you any day buddy. With pleasure.
  • 33 1
@jflb: I think you just got called out!

Why would there be a womens contest?
I mean, unless they're ACTUALLY alot slower...

Sorry, Im just visiting from planet LogicX and Im trying to understand Earths new found customs, despite reality.

Pinkbike please add @vaea and @jflb to the list for hot laps please!

@scary1: I, for one, welcome our new logical overlords

@Dethphist: I second this. Or some weird build like a 26/650b, 69er, Chromag hardtail challenge or a Y2K DH bike challenge? So much potential with this Hot Lap segment! I like it. Good job PB!

Sorry just recovering from a keyboard induced repetitive strain injury at the moment I’ll have to take a rain check.

 @Dethphist:
I'd love to see this happen, though I get the feeling riders sponsors might get in the way.

That trail changed SO much since Remi did his run on it, timing it is completely irrelevant now.Not to take away anything from Remi but CreditLine is much...much slower now than it was last year
  • 4 3
Sam also rode it directly after Whistler EWS round. That's got to be a factor also.
  • 6 0
And Remi had tacky conditions. Sam is god.
  • 2 0
 Remi had better light too...
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69: yeah looked grippy as in Remis run
  • 23 0
At the 7 sec mark it shows that Remi knows the track when he flys over the boulder because he knows the line on the other side and Sam has to slow down going up it so he can see the line choice as he comes over the Boulder.

Get the Pinkbike Mikes to do runs!

 Or this randy guy...
  • 23 0
This is a bit of a long shot, and might get a bit of backlash for mentioning a roadie, but Peter Sagan is meant to be pretty handy on a mountain bike??
  • 8 0
Sagan began his career in MTB, if I remember well...
  • 6 0
@cool3: True, he started his career in cycle cross and cross country and pinned it with junior MTB world champion title in 2008 before moving into road racing. He's sensational on road bike and still can ride mountain bike fast but surely can't compete with these downhill freaks. Actually he doesn't need to, guy is too valuable for this.
  • 10 0
Yeah he’s like the millennials’ Cadel Evans
  • 5 0
I imagine someone like Sagan or Schurter won't risk their fairly good paycheck going balls out on MTB even if they could post good numbers. Not just that, but the upper body strength necessary to really manhandle the bike for the length of time in such a show probably isn't in Sagan, or Schurter's training regime. There is practically no-one in EWS or WCDH who would challenge Sagan on the road or Schurter at XCO. It's not about skill, it's about training. I think one of the few who might be a good all-arounder would be someone like Van Der Poel, who still races all disciplines with fairly good success.
  • 7 8
@PHeller: I bet Nino would be a couple of seconds slower if that. Do five runs and combine the time and he'd be well up. It's not about training, it's about being genetically gifted. Not saying that Hill or Remi aren't, they're very talented, (especially Hill obviously) but Nino is a different ball game altogether.

5.5w/k in an 90min XCO race? Put him on a trainer and that's easily over 6w/kg. That's pretty much World Tour road level. Add to the fact that he's fast as hell on descents and you've got someone who's simply not normal.
  • 6 3
@PHeller: Having ridden some of Nino's trails around Massa Marittima and compared times, I can guarantee he would smoke 99% of PB users on enduro-style trails - what people don't realise is how big some of the XC guys in person (sure some of the road racers lack muscle, but not for modern XCO). Whereas I would be less sure about someone liek Van der Peol, he's more in the road-racer mould.
  • 3 0
@mattwragg: you should check out Van Der Poels insta if you think he couldn’t hang. Kid shreds moto, in addition to being an xc, cx, and road beast
  • 17 1
What about Gwin, Semenuk & Aggy just to mix things a bit and see the difference between top dogs in different disciplines!
  • 24 0
I would love to see Semenuk shred a trail trying to beat the clock!!!
  • 12 2
Right from the start, the video of Sam Hill is just smoother through all the tech sections. He seems to be using less energy than the other person. At least that’s what I see.
  • 13 1
Richie Rude or Martin Maes next
  • 11 5
Remi was just faster than Sam, plain and simple. Hill would never make an excuse.
  • 3 1
I dono, Sam had a slow start and was ~1.5s behind which he caught up and got ahead around halfway in the gnar gnar, then lost out again in the lower flatter bit. Faster overall is faster overall, but Sam really turned up the heat when it got really hairy.
  • 12 2
When remi sprinted up the road at the end and said that's where the Strava segment finishes just shows he has a proper trail advantage. Remi takes it but hill got close with one practice run under his belt..
  • 8 2
the trail has changed. there is no question Sam is a faster rider.
  • 4 2
but Hill wasn't taking the "strava lines", I think I saw Remi go off the track a few times
  • 3 1
@Coldspringer: 100 percent agree with you there.
  • 5 0
How about the rat?how about Nathan rennie?how about kovarik ,how about the ET,and the Brian lopes, and so on just to see how they are
  • 9 2
Lopes would kill it in those punchy sections.
  • 5 1
Remi shreded down the track like no tomorrow, while Hill just rode down like himself, without any stress or struggle. Big difference.
  • 2 0
There should be a hot lap challenge held on the same day in the same conditions on the same track with professional timing and multiple divisions for men and women. You could even put tape along the course and invite spectators.
  • 2 0
I think you might be on to something there....
  • 2 0
WOW Watch that was like how I feel when tryin too go fast, one eye is watching the track at a diffrernt speed from the other eye, yes I should probably get my eyes tested but dont race much any more so not really that important?
  • 3 0
Gee and Rachel, Martin Maes, Cecile Ravanel, Damien Oton, Finn Illes, Miranda Miller, Gwin, Basically everyone. Get them all to do it.
  • 1 0
Awesome, looking forward to having 20-50 riders on the leaderboard!

@pinkbike can we have some indication when riders change lead in the head to head videos?
Something like the virtual straight or just a dot changing from left to right?
  • 5 2
Sam also did this off the back of an EWS Round and the Garbanzo DH.
What prep had Remi had prior to his lap?
  • 1 0
Agree... pretty sure that played a role. Remi seemed to pull away in the last pedally 30-40 seconds.
  • 4 1
I can only imagine I just looked like I had the meanest lazy eye of all time from trying to watch both sides at once.
  • 3 0
Sam has better light and better camera, that's for sure. What else really matters in these social media days??
  • 3 1
At 2.15, Remi Gauvin uses the cheater line that Sam Hill calls out, and goes around, and just can't quite catch back up after that.
  • 4 0
Felt a lot like old gopro vs new gopro stabilization comparison.
  • 6 3
that guy probably knows that track like the palm of his hand
  • 3 0
 "Mr consistency "Damien Oton!
  • 2 0
I got the impression than sam hill didn't go flat out, might be wrong though...
  • 8 5
When will there be women's hot laps, @pinkbike?
  • 1 0
Looks like Remi made up timing pedaling. Sam was cruising, Remi was sprinting. Sam was smoother overall, and smoked from racing.
  • 3 1
Ask any racer, any real racer.it doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile-winning is winning.

Surprised how much Remi’s bike appears to be moving around compared to Sam’s, maybe setup or just riding style.
  • 3 1
 Geoff Kabush, Marco Osborne
  • 2 1
I don't about Remi, but Sam never rode that trail until that day. Knowing or not knowing a track accounts for a lot.
  • 1 0
Curious about a fresh Sam vs. a week of racing before hand. Also him on a 29er for science.
  • 1 0
Have you met my buddy's buddy Randy? Tag him in. He will lick the stamp and send it for sure

How is Sam not huffin and puffin?! ????

 Steve Peat!
  • 12 14
Theres not womens hot laps for the same reason no one cares about the WNBA. Given a choice I'd rather watch the better, faster, stronger athlete. If you dont like it take it up with genetics.
  • 5 2
Hahahahaha... this guy. That's right set em straight Dick o Las
  • 3 1
 can I be next?? hahaha
  • 1 0
Paul the Punter needs to shape up or ship out!
  • 1 0
Starva line about half way was the difference.
  • 1 0
Cool video. I would be slower than that.
  • 1 1
Sam would have won had he worn gloves.
  • 2 1
 Remi needs a new GoPro
  • 1 2
 Soil looks tackier for Remi...
  • 2 1
 Remi probably had it dustier.
  • 4 0
Tacky = slower rolling. Always many variables on the trail, only one KOM!
  • 4 0
@gnarnaimo: oh man, sam hill is a great rider but remi is no slouch either. it is insane how many fanboys jump out of the bushes and claim to have the proof that this was unfair and remi got an advantage. then if the argument of fanboy nr.1 proofs incorrect fanboy nr.2 has his go and uses the opposite of argument nr.1 .

 boooorrrrrrriiiinnnnnngggggggggggggg

I want to see Sam Hill #teachmehowtodougie
