Source: Stefan MorroccoA group of young enterprising Scottish Pinkbike members successfully organised a mini downhill mountain bike race with the aid of the
Pinkbike Forum. The race was held at Braefoot, north of Edinburgh, on the 28th of November 2009 on a short but challenging track that was suitable for novice racers, but still fun and challenging for the more experienced riders. The aim of the race was to introduce novices to racing and to provide a fun, but still competitive, race for the more experienced riders.
Video inside,The forum generated considerable demand, so the number of entries was limited to 25, with 23 people actually turning up to race on a cold and foggy day. I found out about the race on the forum too, so offered to go along and film the race for the guys.
Braefoot Invitational 2009:
Apart from the motivation and hard work, all that was required was some tape to mark out the course, walkie talkies, a stopwatch, a clipboard and a willing person to stand in the cold all day to record the times. The riders spent the morning practicing, and then a seeding run was held to ensure that the fastest riders went off last in the two race runs. The winner was the person with the fastest time from the two race runs. However, this race was less about the winning and more about the taking part and having a laugh with some mates!
Everyone had a lot of fun and several riders were blooded into the sport of DH racing. Races like this are likely to become much more common and the guys who organized this race have some pretty grand plans for the future – good luck to them!!
Thanks very much,
Stefan
