Sea Otter Classic

We have received official word that the Sea Otter Classic won't be running as scheduled in Monterey April 16-19, 2020. Organizers say they will announce new dates by the middle of next week.

bigquotesSea Otter Classic Supporters,

After a thorough review of the coronavirus threat, we’ve decided to reschedule April’s Sea Otter Classic. Additionally, People for Bikes and Sea Otter Classic will reschedule the Bicycle Leadership Conference.

We are coordinating with local authorities to determine the best dates to host the 2020 Sea Otter Classic and Bicycle Leadership Conference. We anticipate announcing those dates by the middle of next week.

Information regarding registration refunds and rollovers will be posted on our website once the new dates have been finalized.

Thank you again for your understanding and support during these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Frank Yohannan

Anyone who had plans already set to go to Sea Otter can just come to my apartment in san jose and we can drink La Croix, wash our hands, and ride mountain bikes for the entirety of the original dates.

@KNOLLYBIKES - BYOC, bring your own cot.
  • 19 0
San Jose is one of the hotbeds of infection in California. This means the trails will likely be less traveled and the stoke level high. I’ll take a lime as well.
  • 8 0
Bringing the Cachaça. Post address please.
  • 1 0
 What part of San Jo?
  • 33 0
@endlessblockades: : Apartment Otter 2020, Down Town SJ. Sponsored by Purell and LaCroix.
  • 6 0
in defense of what San Jose has to offer, the lime LaCroix may be the highlight. trails outside of San Jose however... I'll contribute to the LaCroix fund tho
  • 31 1
Count us in! Don’t forget about Sea Otter Canada - DH Races, Enduro, Dirt Crit and Dual Slalom. Plus we have Maple Syrup flavoured La Croix....(actually that’s a lie)...but we do have stronger beer, lower prices and more mullets.

Sea Otter Canada!!! July 3-5, we’ll supply the first 10 kegs!
  • 22 0
Hell yes on Lime LaCroix Classic 2020. We're in for chips and a few cases of Purell.

LaCroix is gross. It tastes like someone is washing their hands with scented dish soap in the next room over.
  • 2 1
Excellent. Was thinking the same thing (I'm in Monterey). Vendors just set up along the road, people can still demo bikes in Fort Ord / Toro Park. We contact CCCX and see about doing the races anyway...
  • 10 3
@JudyYellow: no. Stay out of Santa Cruz
  • 8 1
@JudyYellow: Oakland Hills and Steel Reserve
  • 6 1
La Croix tastes like someone yelled the name of a fruit while you took a drink of water. It's great
  • 1 2
looks like I'm gonna book a flight now that there's la Croix!
  • 1 2
laCroix? What ever happened with beer?
  • 23 0
We like house parties. Can we crash it?

@Noahgg: O.K. What company is going to donate it's block of abandoned hotel rooms to make this happen....
  • 5 0
 @trek: Thought you'd never ask
  • 1 0
@joostd: I'm going anyway. It's gonna be different this year.
  • 1 0
So.... we all tryna party right? I got the pretzels covered. La croix boys and la croix gurls ready?!
  • 3 0
I’ll bring Mezcal. We then can wash our insides thoroughly and kill that f*cking virus.
  • 1 0
@gserrato: Do they make a quinine flavor? President Trump sez it might be effective against COVID-19.
  • 3 1
Unbelievably on these dates, I'm driving down the west coast, staying in san jose twice , and my daughter's looking at a uni near Monterey . Didn't even know Seaotter was on ..
Apartment guy do you have a spare bike?
So far I've loaned one from Transition in Bellingham. Santa cruz weren't so generous though . .
  • 2 0
@JudyYellow: Sorry Santa Cruz is closed April 16-19, the trails are covered with Covid-19
  • 3 0
@gserrato looking at the responses, your apartment not only replaced Sea Otter, but Interbike as well...
  • 3 0
But where are you going to get TP for everyone?

@JudyYellow: Riding in SC is lame - nothing but easy flow trails and XC loops... don´t bother Wink
  • 7 0
@gserrato: Yo, but maybe hold on the Coconut flavour. Am I the only person who thinks it tastes like sunscreen?
  • 2 1
Please just don't come to Santa Cruz and Barnie it out.

@hit-n-run: "Valley leeches off our beaches" is still alive, eh?

  • 1 0
@Noeserd: I'm surprised there isn't an app for that yet.
  • 1 0
It was a good marketing choice that try didn't continue the color schemes from the D3. I guess 'Corona Red' wouldnt have sold very well. (Yes, that was actually a color for the D3)
  • 38 9
Anyone remember Zika? How about the H1N1 pandemic of 2009? Swine flu? Bird Flu? Ya’ll should probably cancel all future events and sit inside while ordering pizza to be delivered by the autonomous Domino’s van. Theres plenty of shitty shows to keep you entertained. I’ll be hittin the trails with my old ass bike, BBQing, enjoying some beers and hanging with friends and family. Have fun out there!
  • 8 0
 Don't forget Ebola and SARS.
  • 4 0
also mad cow disease and small pox
  • 19 1
Does anyone remember the Black Plague
  • 2 1
@moose-tastes-good: yeah, there was an outbreak in Yosemite just a couple years ago.

Also, moose does taste good! Agree.
  • 1 1
@nicket8t: Ebola outbreaks initiates huge quarantines and would decimate populations.
  • 6 0
@SacAssassin What about the West Nile from all those mosquitos flying around NorCal.

I wish my company would declare. Corporate emergency and close down for a week so I could spend the entire time riding all my favorite trails.
  • 3 0
@rivercitycycles: I got West Nile this past year. Two weeks of misery!
  • 1 0
@rivercitycycles: To me zika is actually more of a threat. So I just try to ride faster than the mosquitoes fly. Its worked thus far.
  • 2 1
Maybe these assumptions and false equivalencies should be skipped unless you are a medical professional/virologist.
  • 1 0
@SacAssassin: Fly dope is your friend. Bathe in deet.
  • 22 0
I'm preemptively cancelling Christmas, sorry y'all.
  • 25 1
Sea Otter is my Christmas, or Easter maybe. My false god of choice is a mountain bike.

Festivus for the rest of us

@dkidd: if you read your username real fast its funny. that's all i got. good luck with xmas.
  • 21 0
Please don't cancel DH races. We promise to all wash our hands!
  • 17 0
There's talks about it already. EWS as well. It's tough when athletes and teams are trying to travel and they may or may not be allowed to re-enter their own countries or be allowed in to countries where races are. I honestly would be surprised if they DON'T cancel races at this point.
  • 21 9
There's a bad flu going around so the entire world stops. Not cool.
  • 5 0
You know perfectly well that DH racers never wash their hands!
  • 6 4
@n1ck: a bad flu with no vaccine (yet), that's what makes it more serious than the seasonal flu.
  • 3 0
@cole-inman: actually due to mild winter this year in EU we are having way more cases of flu induced pneumonia which is also more serious than seasonal flu
  • 5 2
@cole-inman: Do you get the vaccine when you get the flu? This thing is basically only killing the same people the seasonal flu kills.

It's a new flu... maybe a little bit more contagious and can be a little more dangerous to those with compromised health.

When one of your biggest sponsors says they're not coming this is kind of the only option beyond just canceling it. So I guess I'm glad they're not canceling and just postponing. There's talk of canceled races as well. People just need to wash their hands.
  • 3 0
Maybe I missed that but who isn't attending? (Besides everyone now)
  • 1 0
@pistol2ne: let me guess what companies spend more money in ads.... Specialized and Sram.

So can the 1st ride for the fox 38 come out sooner now then..

I am SICK of hearing about all of this Corona stuff
  • 44 0
Exactly. Much prefer Modelo or Pacifico ...
  • 8 1
@bman33: Naw dude. Sol + lime is where it's at.
  • 9 0
Try Victoria if you can find it. The best Mexican beer by far!
  • 12 0
Would you like a Lyme disease with that Corona?
  • 3 0
 @bman33: or a Sol
  • 1 0
then turn off the 24hr news cycle
  • 8 0
This virus reporting is spreading like....err...peanut butter on toast!

(I think I nailed it)
  • 4 0
@bman33: look at corona sales and quotes from 'man on the streets' questionnaires...many dumbasses actually wont drink corona now
  • 13 8
@jrocksdh: there are more dumbasses out there than we all want to admit. They even put one in as the CEO of the US government.
  • 3 0
Corona can't be SICK, Corona actually exists and is delivering product all around the world, whether you ordered it or not.
  • 1 0
@Fix-the-Spade: can I get a refund for my sick corona 29er?
  • 2 0
@endlessblockades: I already have Lyme, I'm waiting on a rum or vodka disease to show up so I can have a Mojito Moscow Mule combo!
  • 1 0
@jrocksdh: I was just thinking about that... wondering how corona beer sales are goin…?
  • 1 0
@toesonthenose2: I never usually drink them but have been enjoying the 24oz 'Familiar' cans and even some quart bottles. The font and color scheme is exquisite and the beer isn't as horrible-tasting as I used to think. I don;t F with those clear fratboy bottles tho. It's just great to be alive, virus-free for now, and drinking cold beer! On the street because the police have given up on enforcement around here.
  • 1 0
@littleskull99: Depends how good you are at hipster hunting.
  • 10 1
I drink the hell out of Corona and haven't got sick yet......maybe I am immune to it. I will wash my hands more before squeezing the lime.
  • 7 0
I'm actually trying to get the Corona virus and spread it to my whole family. That way when we are older we are immune to the coronapox.
  • 10 1
Fuckin Trump. First hes responsible for climate change and now he got sea otter cancelled.

Bummed, but this not unexpected. Lots of tech conferences are being cancelled as well. Would not want to be a shareholder in a Vegas hotel at the moment...
  • 3 0
I wonder what happens with the trailer camping spots if it gets canned for a while? Getting a spot for this year was insane. I logged in at 9am to the website and by 9:03 they were sold out.
  • 1 1
I would vote for cancelling all 2019 reservations with a full refund. Open camping reservations for 2020 in June as usual. I didn't get my usual spot this year anyway so I might be a little biased. Sooo far away from the hot water showers.
  • 4 3
The numbers are low right now due to the fact so few cases and you get full medical care. If mass cases show up your quality of medical care will drastically go down thus death rates will go up. No worries it was created to eliminate the old and weak and slow climate change. Just look at the pollution levels dropping in China.
  • 4 1
I wonder if they will really reschedule? Seems like threat will remain high for the foreseeable future.
  • 4 0

Ya see. This is what happens when Pinkbike publish clickbait titles which are innaccurate.
The press release DOES NOT SAY ITS CANCELLED!!
It says it is rescheduling it.
That means the event is POSTPONED, not cancelled.

 Weak sauce!
  • 3 2
Well that sucks. I'm sure it was a tough decision, but ultimately the correct one.
  • 14 1
Smart sauce. There's a difference between panic (bad) and precaution (good). It's unclear what things will look like a month and a half from now. It takes a lot of planning and money from all involved to make something like Sea Otter happen, and making the call now rather than later allows brands, teams, and event organizers time to plan.
  • 2 2
 Dash of groupthink.
  • 6 5
It is a good solution. It is too precarious right now.
  • 3 6
Not really. Pretty sure many many many concerts are still going on...stay home maybe if your elderly and/or weak immune
  • 6 0
@jrocksdh: Nah they're actually cancelling a bunch of concerts and events. The issue is that healthy people can contract the virus and walk around with mild symptoms or no symptoms at all and spread it to sick or elderly people
  • 3 9
flag spaced (Mar 5, 2020 at 13:45) (Below Threshold)
not really. It's a panic solution. This thing will spread either way. People need to work on their immune systems. There is too much travel, cities are to dense.
